Your second paragraph is the more likely, dogs pick up bad habits, to us, quicker than good ones. If the lurchers owned by the people you know are obedient and decent at their jobs ask if you could tag along, on your own, to get a good idea of what you need to do. Then get out, on your own with your dog, and give it a go. Don't worry that the end of the season is almost here, rabbits don't have a really have a season, as they're pests. And a couple of runs on some easy ones every now and then, should give you both a chance to start honing your skills ?

Not exactly like you've described there. But have had a couple of bitches over the years that behaved well weird just before they were due to come in season. Acting like pups, unresponsive, half hearted when chasing, and a couple of other things. Maybe she's about to come in season? Just to add, before I get slated, bitches weren't deliberatly run at anything when in season, just if a rabbit got up when out exercising ?

Lol ? ?. Fuji has put some good threads up, especially some of his pics, the one of boots head on coursing something was a belter. But to write the stuff he has the last few times he's been on here, well, I really can't fathom it out. And how many hares he's caught in 30 years, 15000 I think he said? And I presume he wouldn't have been hunting them during spring and summer , so half the time. A thousand hares every season for 30 years?
