  1. do you ferret every hole to see if she is telling the truth.and not faults marking ... At first i wasn't sure. Some of the sets that she showed no interest in looked really clean so i decided to put the ferret in...nothing bolted. Sometimes she would mark a set that looked completley uninhabited and an odd rabbit would fly out.Maybe it had just dropped in to escape the dogs.I just ferret the holes that she marks these days. She is getting on a bit now and doesn't have the best of health.Hopefully the two pups will take it on from here. As a matter of interest what
  2. My old bitch is a very consistant marker. So to me this method is proven
  3. Nah........... you must be doing it wrong pal, coz never get a false mark of him... Obviously a dog giving a false mark, isnt a top marking dog, just trying his hand in the game.

  5. Most dogs will naturally mark hot scent. Ihave to pups on now that mark rabbit holes. The secret is to heap plenty of praise on the dog when you see it mark a set. The dog then is aware that this exersise is very rewarding and will go from hole to hole to find you one that is occuppied. You have to be careful though to much praise and the dog will become avery intense marker. This can lead to false marks
  6. I have a very disobediant dog he just goes where he wants to. training him to keep to boundries is immpossible. for some reason he seems to be a lot worse after dark or on foggy mornings. Ah well you cant win em all
  7. FOR SALE - Double tier ferret hutch, very well made with windproof front cover. £100 ono.
  8. I would be willing to take you up on your kind offer. Would i be able to bring my pup along as well? Dont worry about the transport.I will meet up with you.
  9. Ideally you want the rabbits head to go through the mesh of the net when this occurs there is very little chance of the rabbit throwing the net.A little bit of resistance on the net usually acheives this.Nets that are just laid flat over the hole can sometimes be thrown off by a bolting rabbit.I always make sure the bottom ring is lying inside the hole when possible
  10. some are naturals, some will never do it i got mine retrieving dummys from a pup but now he wont bring in his catch,i need not of bothered teaching him.lol it maybe come to him in time I know where your coming from. My nine month old lurcher will retreive a tennis ball all day long.I have now moved him onto rabbit furs which he will bring back although it does take abit more persuading. He has killed two rabbits latley neither of which he was prepared to bring back.Although i do beleive his retreiving of live game should improve after a few more kills. On the other hand anot
  11. Very true my man. I must stop reading posts when im shattered. I did over look the rabbit foot bit. Possibly a rat certainly bolted plenty out of rabbit burys in the past
  12. Theres a lot of mick c about
  13. Someone else could also be doing abit of ferreting
  14. Have you got a trickle charger. A car battery charger will ruin the plates in a battery used for lamping.
  15. One man working the ditch with waders on. I borrowed mine.Worked a treat
  16. Yes i have seen them clear rabbit fencing that has been set a tad to low. At night when taking flight i presume they dont see a low set net until it's to late.
  17. What height do you set your long nets at when working at night? Someone sugested that a foot high will still catch rabbits effectivley at night. What do you belive to be the absoulute bear minimum.
  18. Not sure what is classed as a micro ferret. I bred some ferrets two years ago. They were all under average size. They have turned out to be excellent workers - the shovel is going rusty. They seem to bolt the rabbits that want to move and after a short wait, come off the ones that dont want to move. I am that immpressed with them that i dont collar them up.They just slip through the net and into the next hole. If i need to dig the rabbit such as shallow burys i enter a more robust ferret with the collar on. The only issue iwould have with them is there stamina -You would
  19. My lurcher pup has a really bad case of travel sickness. What can i do to improve the situation? I am hoping the condition will improve as the pup matures. He is 5 month old. THANKS
  20. Any pesties out there who have dealt with rats around a pig farm. I understand that using anti coagulant rat baits is not recommended. I was thinking about using phostoxin for the rat holes away from the building, backed up with break back traps inside bait boxes around any high risk areas. Anything i've missed that could help? THANKS
