  1. Very good mooching dogs. Brilliant nose, quick to learn and eager to please. FUR OR FEATHER not a problem and retreiving is second nature.
  2. Lovely dog that I HAVE A 10 month old saluki whippet greyhound x bull greyhound collie greyhound. Its the double of the one you have in the picture. How old is it? What age was it at when it became good at its job:thumbs:

  4. Somebody as done a bit Sound advice
  5. hAD EIGHT rabbits last weekend and fourteen this week with no digs. Idont collar up but i do use small ferrets. I have a locator and another ferret at the ready but to be honest i havent needed to use it . When they work free they can slip through thenets and into another hole without tangles and snags. Nothing worse for spoiling a ferret
  6. Nice one. No rain then. Complete wash out today for us
  7. Ihave edited my post now. AS I REALIED AFTERWARDS THAT YOU HAD ALREADY GAVE ITS AGE. hOW IS THE TRAINING GOING?
  8. I LIKE Its nice to have a pup on right at the beginning of the season Good luck.
  9. I could ferret them just that were on show abit where the rabbits are. I have permission and a free reign to do whatever is necessary
  10. Thats encouraging. Do you think that they know you are there but just sort of hang about in the shadows waiting for you to leave?
  11. Is it more likely that rabbits on golf courses are more difficult to catch than when longnetting on rough pasture . Is there a possibility that they would be up and running before the net was dropped due to the insecurity that the lack of cover gives.
  12. I always start with nets on, get the pup used to rabbits in the net, let it hold them in the net, when happy, leave a couple of nets off, let it chase back to other holes, encourage the pup to fill its nose with scent at the hole. Leave the nets off for a couple of chases, then when the penny has dropped combine it all together. Marking, working the nets and chasing bolters. Patience. I'll have some of that
  13. Get stuck in. Make the most of the back end . All of the soft fruit should be finished. Dogs through the middle. Then ferret around the edges of the field. Let the farmer know what your plans are just to cover yourself GOOD LUCK
  14. Picked one up from a secondhand book fair years ago
  15. ITS A GOOD START some of the best ferrets come on a bit later. One or two some times never make the grade. I think i would give it more time
  16. Theres a lot of mick c about at the moment
  17. Had the same problem Ithink its because a rabbit fur is very close to the real thing it does get better with time. My pup has just started catching rabbits and the same thing has happened again. It is getting better. Ithink the problem will sort itself out when the dog is fully familiar with the fur. I still throw a ball which he will retreive all day long. Ithink this helps to keep the recall strong
  18. Ready made hunting dogs especially those that are good markers change hands for strong money. If ever they are sold. I What i have given is a true account of how i got over the problem. You have to communicate to the dog whats wanted from it . It's nothing new.
  19. Theres one or two potatoe fields that have just been harvested. He should be ok on these until the maize is safe enough. The dog is only nine month. He is coming on well.Iwould hate to compromise his progress. I will wait.
  20. Thanks I think i will give it a miss with the lamp for now. CHEERS
  21. Got some lamping permission coming my way soon. Little bit worried about injuries to the dog as most of it is fresh maize stubble. Dont know if i shold leave it until the stalks rot a bit. A second opinion would be helpful
  22. Brilliant read. Thats going back a bit
  23. If the other ferret gets on with him why not try entering them together. If not just keep trying him in the odd small set the penny should eventually drop when he bumps into a rabbit. As with most things , some ferrets just take longer to mature than others Patience and time is all thats required
  24. Shredded paper and shavings these days. Ferrets and dogs ended up with ticks from the last bail of straw. You can buy them shredding machines, failing that if you know some one who works in an office ,they should be able to supply you FREE OF CHARGE
  25. A lot of the rabbits bolt as well. This really sows the seed in a marking dogs head. Loads of praise then
