  1. I usually work the jills without the collar saves the mither of getting the collar tangled in the nets.If one of the jills gets stuck on a rabbit i enter a hob collared up.Its not a fool proof method (now and again the hob strugles to find the gill) Jills seem to get tired quicker than a hob ferret BUT THEY BOLT MORE RABBITS. A small hob is probebly the answer, or plenty of nice size jills.
  2. The bulb in my lamp has blown. What wattage of bulb does it take? Also how do you fit the bulb in.There seems to be two prongs sticking up but little else other than a screw on each side of the bulb housing. I dont want to do the wrong thing and damage the lamp

    lamp

Anybody use one of these lamps. If so what do you make of them. Any info a spec would be most welcome
  6. I think youre spot on. Obediance, owners job.Hunting ,dogs job naturally. Not long before the dogs showing the owner how to go on.
  7. I thought you were taking the pee when you said pineapple chunks.Nearly asked if rings would do as i have some of them in the cupboard. Anyway thanks for all the replys on this post
  8. Why do some dogs eat there own excrement? Is there any way to stop the dog doing this. THANKS
  9. Take the dog out on its own.Sounds like theres far to much going on. Give her a chance to please you.Shes probebly quite a sensetive dog. I like the look and sound of her. Praise and encouragement should do the rest.
  10. Get yourself a ferret and dont be afraid of cutting back heavy bramble to get at the rabbit burrows a young LURCHER( pREFEREBLY ON THE SMALL SIDE) will follow what your at .Plenty of praise and encouragement should do the rest. Thats roughly how the three dogs i owned became mad for it. Mongrel lurchers some would call them.
  11. The recall has got to be instant. Hunting up just isnt on. Maybe working on a strong recall in daytime should suffice for night work.
  12. Looks like the lads have got a petition up. Why not show it her- that might do the trick
  13. Thats what i also believed, jack of all trades master of none. I need the dog to be the real deal when lamping i dont want to jepordise his chances of acheving his full potential by doing the wrong thing. Theres so many different veiws on this post.I think each and every dog must vary through breeding and personality. In addition the knowledge and experience of the owner must play a big part
  14. I called on an old mate last night and he said exactley the same.I am probebly thinking to much into it because iwant everything to go right-thats not usually my way -must be getting soft in my middle age. I was out with the pup last night and again early this morning. He is very good on the lead already thanks to the old bitch. She is a very steady dog and i think it will rub off on the pup. I have decided to carry on letting him follow the bitch in daytime when shes mooching about.I will introduce him to the lamp when he is mature enough to give a good account of himself. Your
  15. Thanks for the replys.Very helpful.
  16. Thats the problem i am concerned about. Also the dog that i refer to as a day dog would not have had the necessay speed and agility for lamping due to her build ,never the less shes still a cracking pot filler.
  17. Good post, but personally I,ve always used my dogs for lamp and day time (ferreting, bushing etc.) and never had a problem. Free rein in the day time, instant return when lamp goes out, thas what I expect and all the dogs I,ve ever trained have responded easily. spot on bud, my lurchers are used for everything, not only a one job tool, as said if the basics are there should be no problem. In the day my lurchers hunt, and at night soon as lamp off come instantly back, good luck to you, but try to open the dogs mind to all forms of hunting Which first - any preference.I would have thought
  18. Reminds me of a bitch i once had-whats in her.

  20. Just bought in a new pup. He is saluki/whippet/greyhound sire collie/greyhound/bull/greyhound. His main purpose will be cathing rabbits on the lamp. Iwould like to take him out with the old bitch - she is strictly a ferret/bush/moochy type of dog. Do you think this could cause problems when i introduce him to the lamp later on. Any first hand experiences good or bad would be most helpful
  21. WaIk another dog infront ,the pup should follow. This worked for me.
  22. Couple for the pot-christmas time, doesnt matter how.
  23. Gotta agree: I'd have thought that you would be well placed to feed your dogs on what they catch: whole carcase, maybe not all at once, but a mixture of meat, offal, bone, fat and a bit of hide and hair for roughage is the best diet for most dogs: no worries there about what percentage protein and all that crap they go on about: the whole beast contains everything in the right amounts for dogs as well as wolves. Only thing I would say is that my dogs with a fair bit of Saluki in do better if they get some carbs, usually in the form of boiled brown rice: chuck in a few minced veggies as well
  24. Never owned one but i would definatley give him a fair chance to prove himself.Looks like the makings of a good dog to me. Ithink you only get out of them what you put in just a matter of going about it in the right way.
