Have a laugh mate the uk has a population density of 660 per sq mile just how wild and remote do you think it is??when you consider the usa with a population density of 83 per sq mile and they manage to find and hunt the cats they have.

But theres nobody here saying the lurcher is uesless, its use lads trying to push saying the lurcher is as good as a Lab/Spaniel at Gundog work when thats incorrect. I reckon a Lurcher couldn't go deep back into a wood to look for an injured bird without the owner worrying a deer pops up and its gets coursed across the field infront of a load of guns, i've yet to see any lurcher that works hand signals like a proper gundog( not seen it but wont dismiss it cant be done), i think a lurcher w hereould struggle wildfowling at freezing temps', i've yet to see a lurcher that bashes brambles aside li

perhaps you could point the op in the direction of a litter of well bred lurchers that a beginner could teach to be the all-round gundog that he wants or should we be realistic and tell him he needs a well bred lab that will be a piece of piss to train to do exactly what he wants and when his mates ask what it is he can just say it's a lab rather than guess

Show me a gun dog that can match any lurcher in versatility and multi tasking and i will eat hay with a donkey.. ..i thought we where on about allround dog's...not specialist's in one chosen game.. you can argue all day that lurchers are versatile I however have never disputed that but the simple fact is a lurcher will never beat a gundog at it's own game and since the OP asked which gundog would be the best all-rounder and this is in the gundog section I fail to see how lurchers have any relevance
-
or has had different experience to you? Show me a lurcher that can match them at their specific job day in day out through a season and I will happily retract that statement

. All the services you mention above use collies also as do the likes of mountain rescue, the last time I looked the majority of dogs being used (Scotland) were collies. You won't get any arguements from me regarding a well bred gundogs capabilities, I'm only saying what I have experienced and I'll also concede the point that the majority (not all) of the lurchers I've seen the equivilant and better than a lot of gundogs have been collie blooded. i'll sit on the fence here and try and be everyones mate and say that many times over the years I've had a notion to own and work a gundog bred l

why do the police/military/border control all use spaniels for explo/money/drugs dogs when any old mongrel would do?? could it be cause spaniels are better than bitzas. Having owned spaniels and lurchers all my working life and round fathers before that, for work every day I take the spaniels and leave the lurchers in kennels why would that be cause no lurcher can ever do what I ask of my spaniels simple as really any one that thinks a lurcher could match them is frankly deluded.

that explains why your making more sense than normal then :whistling:

No, that would just be the one Lab I'll have to watch what i write here buddy but i can assure you some of the comments i have made are true and some are made up...... Although i'm having a bit banter with Paul he knows as much as me that his Lurcher cant perform like a proper working gundog. I dont dispute it can pick a few birds, so can pretty much any breed of dog thats been trained to do so........ im just to tight to buy a proper gundog have you seen the price of labs, with my eyesight i can hardly tell the difference anyway Aye but you dont want one of these ones with a bi

IMO non of us should question another's sport, hunting with dogs is banned and rather than comparing or bringing into question other sports we should be standing together to repeal it not bitching about what others are on with.
