Been a tough season but funnily enough this snow has helped, its pushed them all to ground and mainly in the big deep sets. Happy Days. Rabbits are mutant sized as always.

I got a collection of standard ferrets that work all day, everyday, bolt nearly every rabbit that the come across and kill what wont bolt. They will never leave a rabbit behind and are a pleasure to handle, having never bitten me and being happy to be picked up. Soon as the warren is clear they run up and look for the box. Out of interest how would adding this blood to my line benefit me? Other than a more marketable color? I think the problem is too many folk breeding shit has weakened working ferret lines and so folk reckon they need wild blood to make good workers, but give it time and you'

yea the parents hunt she is having three litters hopefully next year she has a good couple of ferrets. Fair enough, but if she is having 3 litters than you know what her motivation is (MONEY). A part of me always looks down on those kind of folk, who breed for cash rather than to keep their line going and then get rid of the excess. If she has an average of say 8 a litter - thats 24 kits £720. Sad

Where did anyone claim that they had the stamina of a saluki etc etc etc. All i'm saying is cos one x or breed of dog could put less in the bag than another does not make it shit. And as for the height thing - big difference between a JR and a Deerhound, but between a 21 & 1/2 " Whip and a 26 " dog there is only 4.5" difference, so how much further can a dog thats 4.5" higher see? so a 21 ats dog can see as far as a 28ats dog can it me thinks you need oot more chief So now any dog under 22 inch is shit is it? Depending on the land you run a small dog can see anything the beam lands on, other times a bigger dog suits, not rocket science but no reason to only bred one type, height or x of running dog. WOuld be a bit boring would it not?

You missed my point mate, it's not all linear. Like birds. Everyone likes to improve, bt you can meet a really hot woman and end up leaving her for a woman that most folk would think less hot but its someone your more satisfied with. Someone that makes YOU happier by the way that she does things. Same with dogs, you might catch more with one but get less enjoyment than working another dog that may catch slightly less.

Simple question i'd want to know is does he work the parents and how good are they. It dont matter whats in something half as much as that it came from good working lines. Plenty of folk breed wild polecat x and diluted strains and some are breeding them worker to worker and producing dark type good workers with a bit of zip and some and just breeding for cash and color. Same old same old really. If they are bred properly then they will keep the same as any other tame mustelid. Space, Fun, Meat, Water, Handling, Hunting, Job done

Competitions, Numbers, Scores! What ever hapenned to going out yourself with your dog and catching game and not worrying how your dog would fare to the others as lomg as its catching and filling the bag, who think BUT I COULD CATCH MOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!! Theres more to this than numbers, if your like your dog fine enough but i could swap him for one that would bag you higher numbers - would you give up your hound? And no i dont know how anyone fared in the 'lamping comps' cos i never gave a shit. P.S - WHo counts as a hardneded lamping enthusiast in your eyes Mr DOO?

Fair point but i read these threads and a lot of folk pride themselves on having spaniels that give tongue when on game and give chase to rabbits Whats that all about? I agree training is important but if your going to train it like a terrier anyway then just get one.

When you say 'hold its own' your basiclly just talking numbers aint ya. I.E if someone had a 'purpose bred lamp dog' they might catch bigger numbers so thats what they should go for and f**k every other consideration? For some folk as long as they take plenty they aint crying that someone might be catching more. It aint all a competition mate, some folk just work their dogs for their own enjoyment.

i may have only OWNED 1 of his whippets, but i seen a fair few run on a regular basis an the mate that owns them has decided to gee them a bye an get a PURPOSE BRED LAMP DOG an he is now the proud owner of a sal/bull/grey Each to their own and i'm not knocking anyone. If someone just wants a dog to knock out to the lurchers why go for a well bred and costly spaniel, which will require lots of training and work when a £50 quid jack Russell will do the job fine, or in fact better as they are vocal and so the lurchers can track them in cover, and they are also a catch dog.
