    An old local poacher i used to know had a pair of first cross whippet labradors. One threw just like a whippet the other a bit heavier. Both were very good rabbiting mooching dogs, but again he did put the work into them. May have caught the odd hare on a hunt and catch basis, but they were rabbit dogs. My friend had a border collie cross labrador, it was a good hunting dog, great at retrieving, it also was quite a tall dog, but if you were gonna cross this you would have put it to a greyhound.

    Canon are good....., but Panasonic are doing some really good ones now, was looking at one the other day just over £100..nice camera...have a look at ARGOS on line, and don't be blinded by the amount of Mega Pixels, anything over 8 million should be well sufficient......Camera at top of thread sounds good. ATB

    Excellent looker whats it like?? Shes a good honest worker. Gives 100%. Can get a little bored when not much is happening. Love her to death. Very, very quick off the mark. Used to be quick enough for pre ban hares....if caught quickly...no good if the course was prolonged.ATB

    Not really had a bad lurcher. Best dog i had for hunting rabbits up was a little border collie bitch which spent the first year and half of her life stuck in a stable and was never let out. I was given this bitch free. I got her spayed as i never intended breeding off her and also keeping dogs on the premises. This bitch put my terriers to shame at hunting and bushing. I even lamped her, obviously lacked top end, but caught her fair share. And when she did catch it was very rewarding to see given the odds were stacked against her. Funny thing was the first time i took her out with my other dog

    Used to give mine light tea at 5.00pm. Never had no problems. Used to go out at 11.30-12.00.

    Always thought it was Sep til end of Feb. Unless your a pest controller or need to hunt through to keep your permission. Catching the odd one walking the dogs every now and then fair enough, but to go out hunting in prime breeding time really stinks... and speaks volumes about the people who do it.

    How old was the whippet when you aquired it?

    My Whippet used to open up. He was carefully entered and not at a young age. I believe mine started opening up because of frustration, this been caused by only getting short chases in small fields and most of the rabbits going straight down burrows. He used to yip occassionally when the rabbit threw him off. I have worked two lurchers since and none of them opened up when chasing on the same ground.

    Must be bloody you thats caught them all. My dogs are lucky to get a run these days. Where in S.Yorkshire do you run them?

    I have always used Jack Russells for bushing. The two i use are quite mild mannered compared to some terriers. Yes they will grab hold of the rabbit and bruise it, but that dosen't bother me too much. I must admit i have often thought about using a cocker or springer, but can't imagine they would be as good as terriers in really thick brambles and may be not as quick through the under growth. But never the less i bet they do make excellent bushing dogs. The smallest of my terriers has gone to ground twice on me in 5 years, but this was down rabbit hole.ABT

    From experience have you found any particular lurcher mix which is better at working bramble patches and other cover for rabbits.

    I currently own a half cross collie greyhound, but i know that a few people on this forum prefer a line bred collie lurcher. It would be intresting to know how many people have put the time and effort into breeding their own line of border collie based lurchers. I think i remember someboby called "David Jones?" advertising years ago in Shooting news/countrymans weekly who occassionally had collie bred lurcher pups for sale and obviously B.Plummer, but other than that i am a little out of date who breeds their own strain. It would be interesting to see pics of you dogs and details of the tr
