  1. I have one lurcher and two terriers. Most i kept was four, a whippet, jack russell and two border collies, all worked to rabbits. I think a lot of it depends on the type of hunting you do, basically i do bushing and hunting up so i need at least a minimum of two dogs. All my dogs get taken out at the same time so its no more effort and nobody stays at home.
  2. Run two Hancock lurchers. My present is half border collie/greyhound, she's quick and very clever, very easy to train, and is firey with other dogs that sniff around her. She has a very playful nature. If much isn't about when daytime hunting up she will find something else to do. I think she would have made a 1st class lamping dog. Worth mentioning she has had loads of injured foot problems upto date. My other was 25% border, 25% beardie and 50% greyhound, he wasn't playful at all, wasn't interested in other dogs he was just into hunting up. He was fantastic at working his nose. He was amazin
  3. There was quite a long thread within the last few weeks regarding the use of tread mills, i was amazed that people actually people use them, saying that i'm still amazed that some people don't keep their dog on after its finished its working life. Personally i prefer the old fashioned road walking, a run in the park, fetch a ball or frisbie a run in the woods etc.....Tread mill in the wrong hands...poor dogs
  4. Was just looking at the earlier whippet thread and it got me thinking back over the years to some of the whippet studs etc that i can remember being advertised in Shooting News/Countrymans Weekly. I was wondering if anybody over the years had any experience of a dog from any of these.... or can add to this list.... Can only remember these.......Country Music.......Marillion (i think)..........Then later on there was Bow (was he whippet/greyhound or just whippet, i'm sure you'll know) and obviously now all you seem to hear is Sooty Sam. There must be heaps more unsung hero's out the
  5. I used to work in a dog grooming parlour and many of the owners who used to show their dogs used to swear by canovel tablets for coat etc. Other than a drop of cod liver oil in their food etc, the best thing without a doubt is a Spray called Velvet Coat...in a pinkish can not sure if its by Johnsons...they do a few similar ones, but hold out for velvet coat, smells great too. Before you spray it on ruffle what you can of the dogs coat, don't over spray though. When finished keep stroking the dogs coat. Not too expensive and you do notice the difference.ATB
  6. Own three dogs, all get worked together. One lurcher and two terriers. This is ideal for what i do, which is daytime bushing, bolting and chasing. On the down side is obviously the cost is up by 3 times...boosters etc. I have found over the years thats its not just down the amount of dogs you keep it can be down to the dogs individual temperament. For example i once had 4 dogs that worked and housed together no probs, then years on i had two dogs to which i added a third, now the third one i added really upset the balance and has been a right handfull, although she is one of my favourite d
  7. Nice looking whippets and good photos.
  8. If its the only dog you have got why not give it ago, it will probably yap like mad and scare the rest in the field away..may also put its nose down and continue hunting up and lack speed to take 99% of them and also struggle to see the rabbit due to not been very tall, but if you fancy doing it give it ago.
  9. My dogs never get much of a chance to catch birds, so i was wondering if any of the dogs you have owned were any good at it on land or water.
  10. Just wondering what the coat is like on first cross poodl, do they malt? or do some in the litter malt and some not malt?
  11. Don't encourage them they'll go out and buy a Honda Fireblade....and be kitting up their dogs in leathers.
  12. I enjoy buying the odd copy off C.Weekly, and i don't think its changed that much either over the years and its the only magazine that i know of that i can buy off the shelf. Plus its probably the magazine that helped you on your way when you first started out...it certainly introduced me to the lurcher scene. I also think it must be hard to turn out different subjects all the time that are going to appeal to everyone. Theres only so many questions and answers regarding working lurchers, you only have to look at this site to see how many questions are repeated, nothing wrong with that at
  13. Welcome back... I use a lazerlite....Its a nice size lamp with enough power. Ive used loads of lamps over the years and this suits my needs best. Not sure of the price though. I generally used a sealed 12v battery, don't cost too much if you shop around, although some of the chaps on here are giving good reviews about the lithium ion batteries been very light and good....not sure about the price though.
  14. How much they cost and for what size amp?
  15. ehhh...WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
  16. Never new people went to such extremes. WOW. Ok in the right hands i suppose. Personally i don't think it could hold a candle to proper good old fashioned exercise. God is it just me that this has baffled? why oh why
  17. Prefer bitches, spend less time thinking about getting their leg over. Thats all my whippet used to think of, in all fairness though my old male beardie/border greyhound wasn't at all like this. May just have been the horney whippet, talking of which my mothers whippet is also a horney little devil.
  18. Would be interesting to know roughly how much it costs to insure a lurcher.
  19. Some say the best..... in the right hands :aikido:
  20. Thought i would share a few pics................
  21. Just a few pics of the dogs........
  22. Does anybody insure there dogs and if so whats your thought about it and how much does it cost?
  23. I would go for a slr canon. Should be something a round that price. Go to jessops and get some advice from them. I would def go for an slr though, as you can change the lenses and if your not used to one they have a fully auto mode on them anyway and it won't take you long to pic up the basics. And in sports mode it might do about 3 pics per sec. You will also be able to alter the depth of field which way make the subjetc stand out and blur the background. ATB Also try the photo forum further down the index page.
