  1. Bull blood seems very prominant in the make up of many of todays lurchers. I would be interested to know what it adds to the lurcher that just used to take pre ban hares and rabbit. I realise you get the staying power etc from addition of saluki, trainability from border collies...etc etc and i realise most lurchers don't need to put on their boxing gloves to course and catch. I am in no way attacking the addition of bull and i know there will be some 1st class catch dogs out there, but what does it contribute? ATB Not interested in fox etc...just pre-ban hares and rabbits.
  2. Just curious what sizes your collie greyhounds have grown to. dogs or bitches, border or beardie.
  3. I work a lot of small fields in S yorkshire, there not all small, but the ones i work tend to be. I need a bloody quick nimble dog. Used to work a whippet, he was quick and very, very game...used to occasionally yip through frustration though. He was good on rabbits, but struggled with hares if not caught straight away....(this was pre ban). Please take into account this was my first dog 22 years ago. I also worked a Hancock beardie/border collie greyhound 25/25/50. This was a much bigger stronger dog who was good at hunting up, had more stamina and better staying power. He had a very stro
  4. Stock breaking is easy if you have patience. The dog should be well capable of learning this. A lot of people turn to shock collars, but this should only be as a last resort if all else fails and you know what you are doing with one. Sure you will be ok.
  5. Jack russells make good bushing terriers...i prefer the smaller ones.
  6. Hi all, used to use an old Canon A1 for pics of dogs and good action photos. I currently also use a Canon Ixus, i think this cost about £200. Its a nice little camera, but i would like something that produces better quality photos like the A1 used to. I am looking to buy a good digital, probably with changeable lenses. I would be looking (when i have saved up enough) to spend around £300-£500. Any advice etc would be appreciated. Thanks
  7. Hi Bird, thanks for the pics you sent me the other day. I tried emailing you sooner but computer wouldn't let me. Thanks Jonathan (Wuyang)
  8. Nothing looks worse than a fat whippet/lurcher, but given there natural racey phyique most given a moderate run look trim and fit for anything. So what my point is how many of you are there that have great expectations but don't put the work in yourselves, and who admits to if its no good its gone. Mine get moderate exercise and are here to stay no matter how few rabbits they catch.
  9. Im really surprised by how many negative comments there have been regarding getting a bitch spayed. If i hadn't got my 3 already spayed this link would have definitely put me off having it done. I mean to what extent is it going to make a difference to a dog that has its good share of exercise....absolutely zero. At the end of the day its not just the lurcher that should have a spring in its step from all the exercise.
  10. All my 3 are spayed. Not caused them to gain weight or loose any prey drive at all. Who wants a bitch coming into season if your not going to breed with her. I will always get mine spayed.
  11. Has anyone seen, or worked a Spaniel or Labrador lurcher weather 1/2, 3/4 or mix. I would be interested to hear your comments. I was just wondering what they would be like as a day time rabbiting/bird dog for hunting up and catching. Just thoughts for the future thats all. 3/4 whippet 1/4 spaniel sounds promising....but there must be a obvious reason why they aren't any about.....
  12. Hope ya didn't forget your flask of tea. Nice looking dogs.
  13. Has anyone taken on and worked a lurcher/ terrier from a rescue centre? Tales of your experience any pics appreciated.
  14. I use to make one from thin bit of rope. Takes seconds to do.
  15. Without my two jack russels my lurcher wouldn't get that many daytime runs and life wouldn't be half as much fun. The rabbits are nearly always pushed from the cover, usually brambles followed by the frantically yapping jack russells. I was just curious to what breeds of terriers anybody has used now or in the past and how you have found them at pushing out the rabbits. Has anyone particular breed or cross stood out? Has anbody used plummers, borders...etc
  16. Thought i would start another debate (hopefully not a slagging match )..... whats would be your choice, 1st cross bedlington greyhound or 1st cross collie greyhound....pics would be good and pros and cons of either.
  17. Looking for advice regards which bones are safe to feed my lurcher and terriers on and what preperation i have to do. Thanks
  18. When one of my Jack Russels was about 9 months she started completely ignoring me when calling her, it was nose down and off i go until i'm ready, this only used to occur when i was heading back to the car. Eventually the problem was overcome, but christ it used to wind me up. I also used to have a Border collie bitch that would turn on the deaf ears when on a hot rabbit scent, she would vanish for 20 mins upwards at a time, did't bother me too much in the day time, but when lamping she would alert every rabbit by doing this if the mood took her. So i was just wondering from your own perso
