  1. Have you been on the Working Whippet Forum.....i'm sure they would give you their pennies worth..atb
  2. Used to know a bloke in Sheffield who had two whippet/lab half crosses (litter sisters), one threw to a stocky whippet, the other one won a whippet class at a local show many years ago. He said they were great rabbiting dogs, he mainly did bushing and ferreting. Both were sandy in colour. I always remember an article in Shooting News some years back. It was about a whippet lab first cross, a little black bitch. The bloke couldn't praise it enough as a mouching one for the pot type of dog taking both rabbit and pheasant, it was really soft mouthed as well. I often wonder why there aren'
  3. I may be wrong but i think he's a bit older than that.
  4. I will have a word with my dad tomorrow and find out in more detail what happened, all i know at the moment was they were fairly young about 18-22. Sh08 ok to pm me any details. Cheers Wuyang
  5. Took my 3 dogs out today with my mom and her dogs (Whippet (a young stunner) and Jack Russell). Half way through the walk she asks if my dad had mentioned about 2 young blokes who pulled up near their house in Sheffield and approached my dad who was just going on/ coming back from a walk. My dad got the distinct impression that they were out to grab one of the dogs/ or were trying to find out which house my dad was heading to/from. My dads quite clued up and a bit of a tough old bugger. My brother also spotted them from the bedroom window and said they were definitely acting suspicious. Eventu
  6. Add my pennies worth. Makes absolutely no difference. I can see benefits to both keeping a dog outside or inside, especially in the development of puppies etc. But a cared for dog kept in or out makes no difference to their working ability. I thought like this when i was young and full of expectations.....i eventually got a bit more wise.
  7. I have often wondered about how useful springer lurcher would be,i would like to think very useful if bred right. I mainly use my dogs for hunting up and catching not just lamp work or slipping. I like my dogs to work their noses well. For this reason i could see the benefits of crossing...springers....and other gun dogs to greyhounds and having them somewhere in the mix...not just stopping at the first cross. At the end of the day springers have excellent hunting instinct would give alot more to a rabbiting lurcher than some other breeds do. As for if this cross was any good then there would b
  8. Each to there own.I had a Border collie that did similar. Damp won't do its joints any good long term though.
  9. My favourite bit of sport. Can't beat it in my eyes even though i rarely catch much, but this makes it all the exciting. I use two jack russels and a half cross collie greyhound. I am curious though about using a cocker or english spaniel or spaniel cross jack russell in the future. How do you compare the spaniels or spaniel cross jacks to the pure jacks at finding/hunting and pushing them out of the bushes? Which suits you best?
  10. I used one but never persisted with it..just make my own whistles now...dead easy look on youtube.
  11. Morrisons complete....looks like omega...£1.38 per 3kg...21% protein. Very cheap and my dogs seem no deifferent on this than much more expensive stuff i have used in the past. I do add meat or tinned fish to this with a drop of cod liver oil. Only problem is the store is quite often out of stock.
  12. Loving this cooper.....ya like a little terrier with a rag
  13. I used to work my dogs (in the daytime...bushing in small fields) with two old poachers in S.Yorkshire. They worked a whippet, a lurcher of unknown breeding and a whippet/greyhound bitch. The only one that caught regular was the whippet/greyhound. In my opinion it just had that special something that it takes to catch in these awkward small fields, i don't know what it was but it had IT. Its not always about catching 40 plus rabbits, some people like me who work in the day are lucky to catch the odd one, but your dogs have to be pin sharp with a quick strike..and the dogs of this cross i have
  14. What a beauty, how tall is she now. How do you find the kelpie temperament, ive heard there supposed to be a bit sharp with strangers.
  15. I use these two little Jacks, not hard terriers quite placid really, but ace at rabbiting.
  16. I know, not another hancock thread,........i currently own a 50/50 border collie greyhound 7 years old from him. My last hancock lurcher was border/beardie greyhound, also from hancock. Hancock told me he wasn't strictly 25/25/50, he had about 9/16 greyhound in him. Anybody else come across this. This was about 16 years ago. Not that it matters, just never heard anybody else mention this.
  17. I had a beardie/border lurcher that did the same, it can be embarrassing and frustrating....but i give it plenty of time and encouragement..it took a while but ended up been one of the best dogs i ever had, only time will tell ,but it certainly paid off for me. Patience is the key...very early days yet.ATB.
  18. Just practice, i'm pretty new to it all too. Not know too much about different types of cameras, but i have a little pocket digtal, canon ixus...nice little camera. But for taking good snaps of my dogs i bought a canon 500d, this i really enjoy using and can take 3+ shots per sec, does a lot of the hard work for me, but will also allow me to progress. You can find some quite useful sites on the net which will give some good tips and advice. Good luck.
  19. Stop end of FEB. Unless bringing on a young dog or doing pest control i personally think working rabbits etc out of season is not sport, why would anyone want to kill a pregnant doe....i know this can happen in season...but why seek to do it out of season....you should respect your quarry. Plus looking forward to the start of the season is lovely.
  20. One of my border collies (good rabbiting dog) got took to the vets, he had a swollen ankle which was causing concern. My mother phoned me and said the vet believed him to have cancer within the ankle and that she should consider her options...have him put down now or wait a little while. My mother said to me that she was going to get a second opinion from a different vets. I said surely they know their job. Anyway she spends some more money at another vets to find out it was just arthritis, vet said that cancer can't spread across the joint. Anyway Jet the border collie lived for a good few mo
  21. After working dogs for a fair few years i am starting to appreciate what an asset good feet can be to a working dog. I don't think it is a factor that too many people consider when buying a dog, but my word in the future its something i going to think about. My first running dog was a whippet, he did suffer from the occasional foot/ankle injury, mainly after a good nights lamping on firm ground, but it didn't happen too often. My border collies used to limp occasionally but again weren't too bad. Now, my 7 year old border collie greyhound throughout her life has managed to constantly injure h
