Always fancied a beddy cross.

Only had two dogs that i would give top marks for finding their quarry. My first, believe it or not was a border collie bitch, she was first class at finding rabbits. My other was a border/beardie/greyhound half cross, he was fantastic at hunting up and finding his quarry. It was lovely to watch him work, nose down, eyes up and cantering along working the scents. I only have ever hunted edible game and have never had much interest in foxes, but my god could this dog find and deal with them, he really does put my present bitch (border collie/greyhound) to shame when it comes down to finding qu

So this is scraped carrot look?.......what did you use?

My first dog was a whippet he was from a very good showing pedigree, dondelayo and samarkands line. He reminds me of the one Sonny has shown. Mine was correct height and nicely built, well in my eyes anyway. I do think some are too tall tyese days. He was keen as mustard and ended up been good on the lamp, he did lack stamina if a daytime hare was put up, but had plenty enough for a good night on the lamp. The only thing i noticed was that he tended to chase rather than put in a quick strike, but as he got older his striking was good. I'm currently considering a whippet as my next dog but the h

Still considering what rabbiting lurcher to get, so if anybody could post some pics of collie/greyhound x bedlington/greyhound or pics of collie/greyhound x bedlington whippet it would be appreciated. Also what you think of the breed and the size etc...thanks

As long as they get some good exercise they will be happy as larry.

All i can comment on is my experience. Owned a border/beardie x greyhound many years ago and i now have a 8 year old border/greyhound from hancock, both have been good dogs that i have been very happy with...just good honest rabbiting dogs. His dogs can make very good mooching dogs in the right hands...like most dogs. So in my experience there is nothing wrong with their abilty to work. Just depends if you mind buying off a puppy farmer. Saying all that if you are willing to wait there are some good genuine people on this forum who only breed from good tested reliable stock, which is where i w

Something like this advertised in this weeks CMW....Pm you details -
i got to agree with that Each to there own, but i like my dogs to hunt and not just be slipped off the lead so i can see plenty of propects of including a bit of gundog in their lurcher. I have noticed that german pointers are also becoming more popular in the breeding of lurchers.

This is the only type of hunting i now do. Really good to watch your dogs hunting skills develop. I work two jack russells and a 1st cross collie/greyhound. Where i hunt there are very few rabbits and most of the fields are very small with hawthorn hedges or stone walls edged with thick bramble. I also work them in woodland and sometimes on an old disused railway track. If a rabbit does break cover the lurcher has all on to catch. Its a good job im not bothered about catching big numbers or catching regular beacause basically i don't catch that often, but i love it and so do the dogs. I think

Are they really that strong willed. I'm used to terriers, but my jacks are really responsive to my whistles etc. Its the only thing that makes me think twice about getting one without a dash of collie in there. Is yours one 1/4 beddy? how do you find it?

Understood what you said until " fa the earth dog running dog" eh?

I just asked my local butcher for any off cuts i offered to pay, but he gave them to me free of charge. I now pick some up every week....make sure i always buy something off him though to keep him happy. Quite a lot of fat on them some times and it can take a while to bag and freeze but well worth it. I sometimes do in the pressure cooker...dogs love it. Its only beef he supplies me with though.

So if i was to buy one would it be better to have the whippet as the bitch or the bedlington? Just there are two differences of opinion in the thread. Any ideas, also how do the bed/whip x bed/whip fair?

I would have thought a cross between a collie and spaniel would be spot on, but if its just for bushing and i would get a pure ess or cocker over the collie cross....saying this i like my bushing dogs to give tongue when on to a rabbit which most spaniels i believe don't, although the upside of a spaniel is it won't go to ground. Some of the cover i work is very tight, it didn't stop my collie bitch so i certainly don't think it would stop a spaniel, but little terriers fly through it rather than crash through it. Some people love the bedlingtons for rabbiting, although some of these look as b

Wasn't there a massive thread on these a few weeks ago?

My collies were very easy to live with, easy than my collie/greyhound (if she dosn't get out she bloody digs the garden up just to let you know she's proper pissed off). The male was very placid and laid back at home, the key just been regular exercise. I used to lamp both of them as well and had some very good sport. I found my bitch was a lot more sharper with other peoples dogs and would put in a warning nip, but the male would go out of his way not to fight other dogs. The only set back is if you have them living in the house they can tend to get quite mucky, unless rubed down with a towel

Now this is where the debate usually starts, half cross on its own struggles for speed, so you automatically think right 3/4 whippet 1/4 bed, but then thats when the the whole whippet versus debate starts. A bet a halfcross bed x whippet/greyhound is quick enough.

My bushing team below, the lurcher is collie greyhound, the jr terriers are not hard terriers, but perfect for rabbiting, the only problem i have had the little one has gone to ground a few times and ive ended looking all over for her. The best bushing dog i had was a rescued little border collie bitch, ive never known a dog like her...she certainly knew her craft and was a plesure to work. When i was younger i worked the above border collie together with another border collie, a whippet and a jrt. The b.collie bitch and the jrt did the bushing the whippet waited for the bolt and the other bor

Something ive often thought about buying, but most people seem to say you are better off with a whippet, or buying a bed/greyhound. Still fancy one though, although i have heard they can struggle to keep up with the rabbit. May possibly get 3/4 whippet 1/4 bed.
