No mate youve read it wrong. I dont WANT a dog to kill birds. But i was telling the topic starter HOW to get his dog some easy catches.

Scooping up the immature birds......woooooooooohooooooooooooooooooo...... Labradors going and picking up a dead bird ...... Wooooooooooohooooooooooo ..... Bring your sooooooooper lurcher and show me how its done anytime you like.................. He aint no super dog fellar and i break all my dogs to pheasant anyway. I was merely pointing out that if you want to get a dog taking feather these dumb birds are easy to start them off on. Just like theres nothing special about letting a pup catch a mixy rabbit. There confidence boosters.

My bull lurcher will carry anything. Gundog men say that dogs dont like retrieving pigeon but my dogs first catch was an injured feral ! When i was younger i used to take my old lurcher around some fields with rabbit fencing around it. The pheasants and partridge just used to run into the fencing and are easily picked up by a dog. Just get them out with an air gun and let them retrieve a flapping duck or pheasant. ATB

rabbit that was cought on wends night....mixi?
fitchet replied to silentrunner2011's topic in General Talk
As already said ive caught a few this year which were just getting over it poor buggers. But lets be honest if the rabbits didn't have mixi killing a few every year we would soon get to the point where mixi could be introduced again ? doubt it with the amount of people that are out there lamping etc. now. Mate before mixy rabbit was in demand. People could go out at night with a longnet and kill 100+ rabbits a night. -
No mate not everyone is inclined to shoot rabbits with an air gun and snaring is an art in itself. You must work your ferrets all through summer aswell then if they NEED work.

Ive also got a really nice chalk stream on one of my permissions. I tie a rabbit or pigeon to a pipe under the bridge and that prebaits for me. Caught trout upto 14lb this way.

I get a quid each from one of the game dealers with skins on. Do what we do and slit the ears of dog caught rabbits and feed them to the mutts And keep hold of the ferreted ones. Id rather buy a bruised bunny than pick shot out of one.

Exactly deer alot more tougher than we give them credit for. A few years back me and my dad were driving to a job and and a roebuck came out of the hedge and hit the front of the truck. Anyway we hit the poor bugger quite hard and he still on three legs managed to get to an adjacent field. Soon had the dog on its case. When we got it home skinned it up one legs was totally bruised just black jelly really. Obviously that was alot of adrenaline but still quite amazing.

Mine all go in bulk to a local game-dealer. Rabbit just seems to be one of those things when you've got loads you cant give them away but when you've got enough to feed the dogs/ferrets/birds every fecker wants a brace !

Cattle sheep pigs chickens even pheasants. What would you say to someone who took you on there land and your dog went and killed a sheep ? Or flushed all the pheasants out of a wood on shooting land ? If my dog flushed all the pheasents out the wood, and DIDENT catch one.............. well, i would not be a happy chappy......... one of the main things a lurcher should do IMO is catch fur AND feather. Agree but your dog should know when its acceptable and when its not. If im on shooting land ferreting and the keeper come to see how im getting on and my dog catches a bird infront o

.410 stealth.. Mossberg or Baikal
fitchet replied to jmj121's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I had a mossberg. Only ever shot rats and squirrels round the feeders with it. Aswell as the odd roosting pigeon. Great guns imo you dont need hearing protection and very little recoil. Im thinking about getting another for ferreting. ATB -
the way the staffies really are......given a chance
fitchet replied to jigsaw's topic in General Talk
Staffs pits bull terriers all very good dogs if correctly reared. The most unpredictible dogs of the lot are in my opinion rotties. And there probably my most favourite breed.
