As said before, I am a huge Howa fan and shoot a weatherby vanguard in .243, however they are a very heavy rifle with mod, scope and mounts on,you would do far far worse than a CZ honestly they are superb value rifles.

Excellent advice, as said you have the land, and good reason crack on and good luck.

Initial outlay for 223 reloading kit
charlie caller replied to fiona22's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Ye the shorter barrels do drop the velocity down on a centerfire, however on a rimfire they are very desirable, choosing a rifle and how much to pay is a question all beginners ask about, if you find a rifle in your price range that fits well and feels right, then buy it, I am a huge fan of Howa rifles, however I would not choose one in.223 as there are far lighter rifles out there, CZ are an excellent choice, light, robust and very accurate,Browning A bolt is another good choice, again light, accurate and good looking, to be honest my preferance would be for a .222 rather than .223 its a buyer -

Ok nice one, the hmr is not the best choice for foxes,it will kill them but please keep ranges sensible,75 yards is about the limit to be sure of a clean kill, mr R lees book is a very good choice, dependent on where you buy the bullets will dictate if they need to be entered on your ticket, however be WARNED, expanding bullets are classed as loaded rounds so be careful not to exeed your quota, have a look on the stalking directory, on the reloading section, there is a very good article with photos on the whole process from empty case to loaded round, shame you are a long way from me or you could -
Dunc we will have a chat about that soon mate I find a nice round that pretty much does everything is, Sierra 80gn sp under 45gns of winchester 760 or h414,(same powder) awesome on foxes, and roe and munties,I would want 100 gn or 95 gn sst on fallow or red,you might find your rifle wont shoot the 105 gns but then you might,be in touch soon bud.

Look up reloading manual on fleabay, or a good country bookseller, modern reloading by Richard Lee is a very good buy,you can buy a Lee hand press kit for about 45 quid, new dies 30 quid, scales, bits and bobs 30 quid ish, so lets say a hundred quid for the kit, powder around 35-40 quid a pound, bullets depends on what you buy, my personal favourite Sierra are about 14 quid a hundred in .223, and primers about 3 quid a hundred, any more questions feel free to ask, so have to ask Fiona what do you shoot with your rifle? nice to hear from a lady shooter. -
Good man onwards and upwards, she wont look back now

Hi Fiona, ok firstly reloading kit is very much like a lot of other shooting related tackle, there is a cheap(but not inferior) way to do it, a second hand set of lee dies and a cheap and cheerfu press, like the excellent lee hand press should set you up, you will need a set of scales, lee are fine if a little fiddly, some basic equipment like a lee case length guage, a cutter, lock stud, primer pocket cleaner, powder funnel, are all to coin a phrase cheap as chips,as a basic kit that apart from primers ,powder, bullets, are all you need to get you going,I would suggest you get a good reloading man -
Have a word with a gunsmit see if it can be bent at all, otherwise live with it, as I do being a left hooker.

Dont really see the point of it myself when a .17 rem is sooo much better.

Unless of course the mod is comming loose after a few zeroing shots as it heats up,and I have seen it (admittedly) only once or twice where a rifle has shot like crap with a certain moderator on, only to shoot very well when it has been swapped for another make,it could of course be a scope problem, try another scope and see how it performs then.

FFS hahahaha, try it it might work. -
Fat chance mate,in their eyes it would be a jolly good way of removing guns from private ownership,I would imagine that they assume lots of people would give up older guns and not bother renewing the sgc, however old guns can be used with other types of none toxic, bismouth (which I think is crap) for one, tungsten matrix, heavy shot, can all be fired in older guns with an appropriate wad,and research continues especially over the pond, into new types of shot,so the outlook is not too gloomy, but I hope it never comes to that.

Careful if you buy a second hand t8 they rot like pears from the inside, you wont go wrong with a PES t 12 I have one on the .243 brilliant sound reduction stainless steel construction. -
Feed him in the dark with a head torch mate, throw a chick or whatever onto the ground, then back away slowly then hold another morsel on your glove and call him to you(obviously lighting the food up with the head torch) then in the beam gradually increase the distance that you throw the food and walk back with the food on the glove, that is how I trained my female and she took to it straight away, if she missed the rabbit (which was not very often) I could recall her from a long way simply by shining the head torch onto the glove, give it a go mate he will get it in the end.

You dont mention if the rifle now holds zero with the mod removed? if it does then obviously that is the problem, firstly how is the threading job on the rifle, if the mod is not on straight the bullet will clip the inside of the mod with obvious results, again with mod fitted does the barell touch the stock IE no longer free floating, again no good, is the rifle grouping well initially with the mod fitted then losing zero after a few shots, mod comming loose may be the cause? I would check all the above before condemning the mod, then if possible try to borrow another make of mod and try that,if

Good attitude Lee, at first mate read, read, read, internet wise, the modern apprentice is a very informative site, books by Martin Holinshead, or James Mckay are a very good starting point, if you can afford it mate a falconry course would be the way to go, if not try to find someone in your locality who will show you the ropes, some people will tell you a Harris is not a good bird to begin with, stating they are too easy and you will not learn a lot about weight control, I do not agree, the only thing I will say mate is that they are very very intelligent birds, and do not like being robbed of

Do you think you could elaberate on REQUIREMENTS, yes there are quite a lot, and quite rightly to, to name a few, no serious criminal convictions, good reason, adequate land to use the calibre in question, your mental health both past and present will be looked at,your conduct IE are you known to the police as someone (for instance) who is of intemparate habits IE are you in the cells every other weekend for being drunk and disorderly, do you have criminal freinds and associates, all these things and more will be looked at,feel free to ask any more questions mate and we will do our best to answer

If he will alow .243 then go with that mate, you could always book a days stalking, say on the muntjac, that will then give you a reason for the deer condition, that way if your ground is safe for .243 then he has no real reason to refuse you IE, fox control and stalking by payement or invite,it might be that you only wish to stalk once or twice a year, but that is no concern of the feo, you have good reason for the calibre and condition,so if that is what you decide you want dont be pushed into a .22 cf. really appreciate your comment. sorted. i'm gonna do that. and get my ds1 out the wa -
or invest in a reloading kit mate, then you can load your prefered rounds and not have to worry about the vagaries of the local shop.

dam that predictive texting!! ta for the comments aside from reloading kit, how much per reload is it costing people for the .223 and 22-250? I dont reload .22-250 or .223 however I do reload .243 and I reckon about 38 pence a bang, so the two former calibres should be a little bit less, you would be better with a .22-250 in my opinion mate, why not have the extra reach and stopping power if you can? just make sure if you buy second hand, you give the throat area a good check preferably by a gunsmith with a borescope, everyone I know that shoots .22-250 love them and would not change -
Dont forget, first before you do any of that you must have some land to shoot it on,assuming you want to shoot bunnies ect.if you only want to punch holes in paper, join a club.
