  1. Why dont you get a .22 hornet, and reload it? foxes out to 200yds,head shot bunnies @ 200yds,quieter than an hmr(with a good mod) if you reload it you hould be able to shoot for peanuts,as the hornet only burns a tiny bit of powder
  2. You should have told him to buy the best, you know with a match trigger and match barrel, yep an Anschutz 14" barrel, simply the best rimfire made.
  3. I am afraid there is really no such thing as a cheap 4x4,I would steer clear of landrovers, overpriced, and go wrong constantly,I should know I used to be a landy mechanic, fourtrack are an excellent vehicle, and the 2.8td is good on fuel, my last one did 35 on a run easy, they are getting a little long in the tooth now,the chassis are excellent, they never rust,it is the bodywork that lets em down,ie sills.back body ect,but if you can find one that is good, spray it with clean engine oil underneath and it will last, vitaras are good again look for rust,I have a Jimny at the moment, and it is brilli
  4. Just a thought mate, have you tried feeding him on the lure? it would be interesting to see his response at a distance with the lure, also do you feed him in his mews or in the garden very close? try taking him somewhere different, and see how he goes, if and it is only an if (as stated we have some cold weather looming) he is a little heavy, give him a try in the dark, with a headtorch shining on some food,if you normaly feed chicks, try something he will be really keen for (white mouse?) Ihave see birds overweight for daytime flying respond well in the dark, try it bud it may give you some food f
  5. Howdy mate,I have always used a guy called mick, he is a gunsmith, he works above joe nevilles gunshop in Alfreton,01773834062 prob not the cheapest around, but his work is excellent,I have had two rifles screwcut by him and both were very high quality work.
  6. What does his keel feel like at his current weight? does he feel fat, obviously difficult offering advice on a bird you cant see,but if his keel feels plump, try dropping him a little at a time, and carefully monitor his progress at each stage, but keep feeling that keel bone, becouse you dont want to start him screaming.
  7. Well done mate,on your way now then.
  8. Should be ok mate, most modern rifles will outshoot their owner, straight out the box, sounds like a good deal, not sure about the hawke scope on it mate, unless its an endurance 30,but you can always swap it for something better when funds allow,if the rifle feels well balanced ect, then why not,Mossberg have been making guns for a long time,so the quality should be ok,the only other option I would explore,is to look for a second hand Howa/weatherby,absolutely cracking rifles for the price,in fact they shoot as well, and the quality of the engineering is as good if not better than some rifles costi
  9. how very true,a peice of advice a lot would do well to heed.
  10. Why? Depends what you want it for imo. and mine too,go for the rough coat.
  11. I emailed him to reply with my thoughts on a letter, that one of his ar-e lickers sent him, suggesting that the plight of the ash tree would be a golden opportunity to get hunting banned for the time being(I thought it was?)anyway I replied with my thoughts, that this would be a golden opportunity to eradicate grey squirrels,to help stop the spread of the disease(obviously)and once under control re introduce the native red squirrel,I obviously asked him if he would be keeping up the cull of deer on his land,to stop them, and humans ie poachers and naturalists alike from straying onto his land and
  12. Dont buy a Hatstand mate you will regret it,the Remington (as stated)is 10 times the gun.
  13. Derbyshire Goshawks mate, genuine guys who really know their onions, proper finnish Goshawks, from wild caught birds, have a look at the website mate, trust me you wont go wrong with a bird from these guys.
  14. Correction .22 hornet minimum, I should know as I have one on my ticket for fox.
  15. Always try to hunt mine coming down. Bring her weight up on a kill (good feed) then bring her back down for the next outing. Got to be the best way of doing it,rather than just trying to hold the bird at flying weight for ages, worked well on my last female Harris.
  16. Good advice, all I would say is tread carefully, dont bring the weight down fast, shave a bit off try the bird, the last thing you want is a mega aggresive female redtail, cos it will hurt, it sounds to me that your weght of 2lb9.3 is getting somewhere close, but only you can determine that mate by trial and error, best of luck, sounds like you have the makings of a good hunting partner.
  17. Yes I agree, I have seen this rifle take bunny head shots at around 90-100 yds consistently, you cannot ask more of a .22 than that.
  18. It is unlikely,(but not impossible) that your 12 acres is passed for a .270/308 if it is not, then even if you have land that is,unless you are granted an open condition,(again highly unlikely on your first cf application) you will not be able to use your cf on that ground,my advise would be to bait the foxes in close and deliver 42 gms of no 3s from a 12 bore, that should stop em chicken theiving.
  19. Oil on your clutch mate,if you fitted a new clutch,it would do it again in a week,as the oil is comming from your gearbox, just live with it mate, thats old 4x4 s for you m afraid.
  20. Oh and dont forget the mentor they will insist on,remember the guy has no experience.
  21. If you want to take hares mate, it has to be female,as a male does not have the weight and power to hold a hare, consider a redtail as well mate, you will learn more about weight control with a red than you ever will with a harris,as good as they can be.
  22. Land does not need to be cleared for a sg,due to the limited range, however take into consideration, safe shooting and always be aware, and respectful of people living in close proximity,if you wish to find out if a specific peice of land is passed, ring your licensing dept, give them the name of the farm, and landowner, and they will have the ground on record if it is passed, and up to what calibre, mentoring is a condition (more recently) placed on people new to firearms, some people seem to think if they quote home office guidelines, they are quoting law and the police cant deviate from them, nothing
  23. By all means mention your military experience, but Im afraid it does not count for a deal where civilian ownership is concerned, you will be checked, rigorously, again quite rightly so,checks with special branch, all your background, to ensure you have no links to animal rights groups, neo nazi, ect, ect,if you are unsure about anything, even a speeding ticket, declare it,will you be applying for a shotgun or a rifle mate,be aware that the procedure for obtaining a sgc,is less hassle than an fac,you will still be subject to the same background checks, but you do not need specific checked land for a sgc,
  24. As above, be totally honest, about everything, even if you dont think it matters,IT DOES,ie if you got done for pissing against a wall in 1987 put it down, if you are applying for an fac, make sure you have land passed for your calibre ,and cast iron written authority to shoot, also it would benefit you, to get out shooting with an experienced fac user locally, who would vouch for you when you apply, you dont say if you have any experience so I will assume you dont,so your licensing region may well(and in my opinion, quite rightly) insist on a mentor,it sounds daunting at first, but at the end of
