Cheers Mac, Luckily round here even if the rabbits are wiped out in certain areas due to us ferreting or myxi they soon come back within a few months. I think it's mainly because round here it is a lot of small fields (crops, livestock and orchards) to the rabbits soon re-colonise by travelling the hedgerows when seeking out new territories. Also last night I didn't mention that a fox was out early on and was a bit miffed at me being there and proceeded to keep a good field or so distance but was continuing doing that spine chingling scream. Interestingly this did not put the rabbits o

After spending the day trying to keep my lads entertained as well as try to resurrect an old outboard engine that hasn't run for 20+ years, I decided I needed a bit of time out to get on top of those allotment rabbits. The wind was in a different direction from earlier in the week and I reeked of two stroke fumes even with a change of clothes so I needed to approach the rabbits carefully from downwind. This meant crossing a muddy cow field so I opted for the wellies rather than my usual walking boots. After a quick zero in the garden and a change of batteries for the lamp I set off at

Good luck with your new permission. Look after it and more will surely follow. When fishing lakes late in the evening it does unsettle you when those crafty critters sneak up under the staging you're fishing from and try to steal some freebies. Now go splat those rats!

Headshot This Duck At 35 Yards, Lazed With The 100Kt

You're quackers! -
Because I use rubber pellets that only knock them out so they'll still fresh when I get home, problem is if I stop off at the pub on the way home and get back a bit later they have often come round so I need to finish them off with the pin. Only kidding!! It's to hit the back of the big knife to cut them into joints, especially when removing the bit between the rear legs.

That's all the cartridge cases my lad collects from all the shooters on the local shoot that we beat on each season. He wants to make some more x**s lights like we made before: I've seen a nice idea of using the metal caps under a glass topped table but not sure the missus would agree.

Whilst lying under the old Disco today replacing both the exhaust and a knackered drivers seat the local farmer stopped by whilst walking her dog and asked if I could take my ferrets up to the village allotments and sort out the rabbits. I mentioned that it was now a bit late in the season for ferreting but I'll give it a go if I can but could I get up there with the S410 which she duly agreed. So this afternoon I went up for a look without the gun or ferrets. There were lots of trip hazards to be wary of if I came at night but I did see some evidence of rabbits where they had broken throu

Good to still be out at the end of the season. Near enough finished down here, although just been asked today to clear some rabbits up on the allotments so may give it a visit with the ferrets or pop up after dark with the airgun.

We often have them doing this as well where they just loop round (ideal if you have a shotgun but not much use with the airgun). If a group of five or more birds are coming in this nearly always happens as if they each have a small sense of something not right and therefore spook each other. However, when a single or pair come in they usually land especially if they come in low and fast from the sides. Also it is noticeable that often birds will come in to land in a nearby tree but then with time to take in the scene they will never then pop down to feed. So we will sometimes try to find a sit

Don't be sorry about 'borrowing and improving' ideas, that's what forums are all about, I've learnt loads from others over the years from this site to help me further improve my knowledge.

I tried out a few things over the last year. Originally we used shooting sticks but they were too frustrating when moving the gun around the hide. Then I tried a padded bar system supported on three rod rests that worked well for both of us to share the brolly (Daiwa mission shelter). Now everything was getting a bit cumbersome to lug around, then I had a little eureka moment and did away with the rests and padded bar and instead just got a suitable piece of wood drilled two holes for the mission shelter's storm poles to fit through and then adjusted and supported on car hose clips (just don't

Hi Mark, Both rifles are .177. I was using AA Express in my S410 whilst my mate used Exact heavies in his HW100. Last year I was always trying for headshots and my success rate was pretty poor as too much time was spent trying to aim for such a small target that was bobbing around which inevitably led to many pigeons flying off before the trigger was pulled. Now all my shots are heart/lung as this works well with the quick snap shooting needed and they nearly all drop instantly. Today we had three flyers (two of which fell into the thick hedges), the other flew straight at us landed in the

Well the ferreting season is almost at an end and the rivers have just closed for a few months (though wild brown trout season starts Friday) so it was time to dust off the S410 and get it ready for the season ahead. Too much rabbit, pheasant and duck in the freezer so fancied some woodies for my game pies. Mate from Devon joined me today with his HW100. Originally we were going to go yesterday but the weather has been so unpredictable so waited until storm Katie passed through last night. Had spent the previous day driving around and looking for pigeons, there were a fair few around the p

Great post and cracking photos (although not sure about the product placement on the fourteenth).

Alright Chris. Yeah, to be honest, its so big Ive always just stuck to the areas I know well... but I must branch out a bit more. It basically a 10 acre, I think, working land and the owners grows bits an bobs for tescos or something, but its got an industrial side too, the shed and so on over the other side, but I find theres more dog walkers over that bit and I dont want a dressing down, even though they shouldn't be there Get back on your hunting posts man, aint seen your stories for a while. Hopefully going to get out with the S410 again soon. Been busy with the ferreting and

Looks like a nice varied range of terrain you've got there. Must be plenty of varied opportunities throughout the changing seasons.

Brilliant thread and great pictures. Love those memories that those photos bring back to us. My first was a .177 BSA Meteor and now I've moved onto the S410. However, I just bought my lad a very old (but in pristine condition) BSA Meteor for £20 for xmas so hopefully he'll be getting some memories from this. Thanks for posting.

Well done on the new perm. Get a longnet round that mound chuck in a few ferrets and sit back and enjoy the action.
-
Great shooting, those lads will soon have a 'baby's bottom' of a field to play on soon.
-
Nice videos. Good to see the follow-up shot rather then going for another, good shooting.
-
Nice session there. Send the farmer the link for this thread and he'll see what a great job your doing and may give you the perm based on results.

Nice lot of photos there. Just like the hedges round our way, lets hope we get some proper frosts this year to kill the cover.

They're both my mates dogs. I think its a bull x grey, the other is his new pup coming out to get used to the ferrets and nets.

Nice outing there, and a great little clip.

Bit too hot this weekend and short sleeves and stingers do not go well when all your ferreting is in thick hedgerows. Even so we had a few: Chris
