A dog for your head and a dog for your heart
Macsen replied to WILF's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Romantic?...nah, just a realist, I dont need to go out and catch several cartloads of game, I'm not a big time hunter or a pest controller, just somebody who likes the dogs for what they are and occasionally to see them at work. -
A dog for your head and a dog for your heart
Macsen replied to WILF's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think I'm with the majority here when I say it's heart for me. I like my dogs to have their own personality and its only fair to the animal that it makes its own mind up sometimes. After all we humans are far from perfect ourselves so what right have we to expect our dogs to behave like machines. Such is the joy, and sometimes frustration of owning a deerhound x, after close on 12 years with these noble dogs I have come to realise that no other cross comes close for me, even if they sometimes are a little stubborn, slow to mature and suffer from selective deafness. What I expect from my dog -
It's one of my favourite festivals and an important event in the pagan wheel of the year.

Macsen replied to heart of wales's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Aye, I was at the welsh valleys show (first outing for my deer x pup) and the quality of his dogs is top notch, it will be interesting to see how he gets on with that pup next year. -

Looks like it was a good show, gutted I had to miss it due to other commitments, will definately find the time for next years shows though. Btw, is there anything Damon Davies has'nt won? -
Will never vote unless somebody starts up a decent welsh nationalist party. Cofia Cayo...

Lovely dog, very noble looking.

No problem folks, just thought you all should be aware of the goings on in this part of the world. This thread is by no means an anti-traveller/p***y/gipsy thread, just a warning to all to be extra vigilant in this area. It seems that stealing then holding dogs to ransom is a growing trend amongst a minority of these people.

One of the best posts I've seen on here, this is exactly what I joined this forum for, some cracking pics too.

Keep a lookout for a white pick up with a blue back thats doing the rounds collecting scrap metal...it may also collect your dogs. On monday one of my girlfriends work colleagues had her dog stolen from her garden just after she'd left for work, seems the thieves had waited for her to leave home before making the move. Neighbours spotted what was going on and rang her.The police were very unhelpful...surprise,surprise. By a stroke of luck another friend knew of a vehicle that fitted the description often parked in Llanelli. After a bit of detective work and some phonecalls the dog was locate

Watched it a few weeks ago, must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, the best hunting DVD I've seen for ages.

True, I am very much a countryman, had dogs all my life, started with an EES when I was a kid, my grandfather used to take me out rabbiting with the old Baikal 12 bore, he also taught me how to catch trout with my hands and lots of the old ways to relieve the countryside of its edible creatures...spent a lot of my childhood on farms helping out and learning. Owned a bull cross myself about 15 years ago, but decided that deer x's were the ones for me.Its a real shame whats happening now in the lurcher world with all the crime and disrespect that goes on amongst certain factions, but I guess th

I get the walking boots on and head out into the hills, a goo 15 - 20 mile amble around the beacons do it for me (with the dogs in tow of course). Alternatively, I get the guitar out and make some glorious music.

Cheers migmog, he is the second deerhound x that I've had the pleasure of owning, the previous dog Gelert was a 32 tts monster an absolute gentleman of a dog. When we lost him last year after a long illness (heart problem) I was determined to get another similar cross, after a bit of searching I found a chap that had a litter of 10 pups fairly local to me and picked Macsen at 3 weeks old. I was able to see his sire, his dam and grand dam as well as 2 sisters from a previous litter so knew what type of pup I was getting. To say I am happy with the way Macsen would be an understatement, look

Aye, and the dog has the good sense to heed that warning and also to listen to my command, I live in an area surrounded by a mixture of cattle and equestrian holdings, getting my dogs used to the ways and habits of other animals is paramount. We got to within about 6 feet of the ponies with the dogs walking to heel, its something I have always done with my pups. The ponies went about their business as usual once they realised the dogs were not a threat, to be honest the ponies are quite used to the dogs, we walk that area weekly.

Just about 23 tts and almost 5 months old, reckon he'll do around 30tts, already showing some speed and a decent turn, just started to jump, got a good brain on him too.

Cheers Lavyheed, was a good day out with the dogs, he's learning really well from my 10 year old colliex bitch, Gwen.We got to within a few feet of the ponies with Macsen walking to heel without having to keep telling him, learning all his manners and obedience over this winter, he'll be learning to work next year.

The pups teeth are falling out of their own accord at the moment, macsen behaved well amongst the horses, all part of his education.

Macsen the Deer x pup meets some ponies on a walk yesterday.

Nice looking deer mate, how are they bred?

Great looking hound mate, I'd say theres more than a bit of deer in him. Doesnt look overweight to me, just a good solid deer x, exactly the way they should be. Keep up the good work.
