  1. A deerhound x might suit your purposes well, as much as I love pure deerhounds a well bred cross would be a better animal. My old dog was a deerxgrey/beardie (dam pure deer sire grey/beardie), made 32 tts, had a great temperament, a good turn of speed and plenty of bottle and stamina.Regular long mountain walks kept him in tip top condition. Easy to train and excellent about the house (my dogs live indoors). He was 100% with kids and a very clean animal. My only regret was that I never bred from him. My current pup is a similar cross (sire deerhound dam deer/grey/beardie) and at 14 weeks is prov
  2. My deerx pup is 14 weeks old, 191/2 tts and his tail is almost to the floor, he's all legs, ears and tail at the moment and growing rapidly, he also eats very well!
  3. Fook can you imagine a proper fat saluki atb Richard It would look nearly as ridiculous as a jrt x grey!
  4. There seems to be a hell of a lot more rabbits about down here in west wales this year than usual, hav'nt seen any mixy about yet though everything looks healthy so far.
  5. More nice pics. Whats the breeding of that big brindle hound?
  6. Nice photos Dai.That looks like the lake the other side of the mountain, llyn y fan fawr and the path up to bwlch y giedd, here's a photo of gelert taken a few winters ago looking back towards fan hir with llyn y fan fawr on the bottom left of the pic. And another of Gwen on the summit of fan brycheiniog.
  7. Sorry to have missed this years show, but will definately be making the journey up next year.
  8. Camarthen fan??? I live a mile from Llyn y fan never heard of camarthen fan. I've heard of it, and I'm in Pembrokeshire! well done maltenby happy you know there is a camarthen fan, but it aint by llyn y fan pal. Trust me. It most certainly is llyn y fan fach, been going there since I was a kid, I walk the black mountain on a weekly basis, its one of my favorite places to go. Here's some pics taken on friday on the other side of the mountain near the source of the Tawe.
  9. Aye its at the north western edge of the black mountain.
  10. Camarthen fan??? I live a mile from Llyn y fan never heard of camarthen fan. I've heard of it, and I'm in Pembrokeshire! The range is known as the carmarthen fans or bannau sir gar in welsh, the actual peak that the photo is taken is near to waun lefrith.
  11. The pic is taken on carmarthen fan, above llyn y fan fach in the western beacons, one of my favourite places to walk and excercise the dogs.Taken on a rare day when it wasnt raining up there!
  12. Really nice hound that foxhunter. What exactly is his breeding?
  13. Thanks for all the replies folks...seems I'm not on my own then! The mrs. doesnt object to my interest in hunting, she's just not interested in participating, which is probably a good thing as I quite like the peace and quiet. She does come with me to the odd show and country fair occasionaly, but dont think a cold winters night out on the lamp is quite her thing!
  14. Just wondering if theres any others on this forum who have a wife/girlfriend etc who are not into hunting. My mrs. although not an anti is very squeamish when it comes to the subject of letting the dogs loose on the rabbits (born and bred a city girl). Anyone else with a similar problem?
  15. Hehe, you havnt got to live with him, he's a bundle of energy at the moment, chewing everything in sight, chasing the cat and generally taking over the house, he's like a big clumsy giraffe. Will be interesting to watch him progress and develop over the coming year. Will start him gently in the fields next season and see how he goes.
  16. Gelert passed away a few months ago aged 11, he had a suspected heart attack last october and never quite recovered from it. When he was in his prime he was a joy to see in full flight, five bar gates were jumped with ease, surprisingly agile for such a big dog, although not as quick as a smaller/lighter dog on the turn.Incredible stamina though, the pics were taken on a 15 mile wander around the black mountain in the western end of the brecon beacons. It was an absolute pleasure to share 11 years of my life with him. Bought a pup a couple of months ago which is a very similar cross (deerhoun
  17. Maybe I'm lucky, but the vet I use (typical mixed animal surgery in my local village) has a genuine passion for lurchers, he's very understanding and has proved invaluable over the years, his rates are very reasonable and is always ready to help in an emergency. The staff at the surgery are always very helpful and patient. I think its always worthwhile to insure the dogs, that few quid a month is well worth it when serious(expensive) problems arise...and choose your vet carefully. Ask other working dog owners which vet they would recommend.
  18. Regardless of their stance towards hunting the Levs are indeed a fine band, seen them live more times than I care to remember over the years. Most of the early albums are spot on, but there are a few duds too...(hello pig, green blade rising), the latest album is pretty good actually.
  19. Nice pics everyone, keep 'em coming. Hello Mark, good to see another one of the gang on here, the pup looks like its doing just fine, In the pic of all the pups together, I'm guessing macsen is the one on the far left. Deerhound x's are absolutely amazing dogs, fantastic temperament and very loyal...sometimes not the best brain in the world though! Macsen is my second deer x, my old dog , Gelert (the dog in my avatar picture) died on the same day these pups were born at 11 years of age and he was a superb dog.
  20. Now thats a bit of a coincidence...Macsen too is obsessed with snails!
  21. Nice strong looking pup, all the best with her.
