  1. Here's a couple of pics of Gelert my old Deerhound x grey/beardie, RIP...32tts
  2. Excellent stuff, she's looking great, still very similar looking markings to macsen, aye the autumn will be great fun!
  3. Mac, there are some that take more than the odd rabbit or two !! Cheers. I dont doubt for a second that there are, maybe I worded my reply wrongly, was just trying to get the point across that for my particular lifestyle the deerhound x is the perfect dog. There are many on here that will have you believe that they are too big to work seriously on rabbits or that they're only good for use on foxes or deer(pre ban). But after many years of owning them and watching them work they are surprisingly agile and quick for such large dogs.
  4. As always it's each to his own as far as crosses go. Personally I dont think I could be without a big deerhound cross, Macsen is my second, bought after meeting the breeder at the welsh game fair last year a couple of months after losing my previous deerhound. They are in my opinion fantastic gentle giants...maybe not the most versatile dog in the world or the most prolific of catchers, but, if like me you want a hound that you can occasionally take out for a bit of sport and catch the odd rabbit or two then they are perfect. There are some absolutely cracking deer x's out there.
  5. Some nice tattoos here folks. Forgot to mention that mine was done by Andy Groves at hidden jewel tattoo in Carmarthen, west wales. A top bloke and a damn fine tattooist. Will be getting some more work done with him later this year.
  6. Helen, Macsen's sire was a full deerhound. hav'nt started him working yet, will do that next season...he loves raw meat though, one of my neighbours is a butcher and often brings bags of goodies over for him, he has a VERY healthy appetite!
  7. A couple of pics of Macsen (deer/grey/collie, 11 months old) and Gwen (bitsa, 11 years old) keeping cool on a warm spring morning.
  8. Cheers for the replies everyone, in answer to some of the questions...he is now standing at 29/30 inches tts, still not fully mature, though at a guess I'd say theres not much more growing upwards to be done, maybe another inch. He still has some of his puppy traits but is generally an obedient dog, 100% off the lead and with livestock, jumps well (5 bar gates are no obstacle) and listens to commands. He has proved on several occasions that he has a brain and recently has developed a liking for water and swimming! He lives in the house with us, a cat and our other lurcher Gwen, can be left
  9. Yeah, he has a hell of a thick coat on him, does cause him to feel the heat on warm days when he's been running hard, but after a good drink of water he recovers quickly. But like I've said in the past, he will never be worked hard and most of that will be over the winter. Only time will tell how he copes though.
  10. After losing my old deerhound cross Gelert last year after a complicated illness, I decided to commemorate him by getting another tattoo, hav'nt had any ink for at least 12 years so spent some time searching out a decent artist and coming up with a design which is of two hounds bound together in celtic knotwork. Here are some pics of the tat in various stages along with the finished work, took around 6 hours in total.
  11. From this @ 8 weeks... ...to this at almost 11 months old He's coming along great now, turning out to be a very decent dog indeed, we'll see how he goes next season.
  12. That'll be old Bill Mclaren then, still miss his voice on the commentary. Guessing you're from Hawick then?
  13. Aye, well done the scots, gritty determined defence and a little bit of luck won them that game...and they more than deserved to win for their sheer bloody mindedness. We shall see what the aussies are made of when they come to the millenium on the weekend. Looks like Peel will be in at scrum half too, cooper has been released by the welsh management to play on tuesday for his region, so looks like he will be ruled out for the australia match, good news indeed.

    CLOTHING

Some of the specialist 'outdoor/mountaineering' brands are worth a look for some top notch waterproof gear, check out Mountain equipment , Rab or Haglofs, not cheap, but they do work. Had my mountain equipment waterproof for a couple of years and its always kept me dry even in the worst weather.
  15. Here's my 10 year old bitsa bitch 'Gwen'...there's collie in there somewhere.
  16. Thanks for the advice folks, but after having a look at several other bits of this car I have decided not to bother fixing it, it is now up for sale as a spares vehicle. So if any of you know anyone that needs a 1995 mitsubishi rvr sportsgear with 4 wheel drive and a 2 litre petrol engine with a knackered transmission, then pm me. car has 9 months mot left and loads of useable parts including a full stainless exhaust system (including cat) which has only been on the vehicle for 3 months or so. Looking for a cheap small 4x4 for the winter, so if anyone knows of a decent solid vitara or similar
  17. My kind of animal that, lovely looking hound. How tall is he tts? Got a deer x myself, almost 6 months now and just over 26 inches tts, different colourings to yours though, mine is a light brindle. All the best with the dog for the future.
  18. Oil level checked, not much difference in level when hot or cold. When the engine is up to temperature the gearbox oil shows well over the maximum 'hot' mark. I did notice however that when the car has just been started (the engine temp cold) I am able to drive the car backwards and forwards, albeit at high revs. As soon as the engine warms up the car will not move (the revs go to the red line and still no movement)...could it possibly be the torque converter?
  19. It started off slipping only in reverse, but now its all forward gears as well. Will be having a look at the oil level on friday if this fecking rain stops...oh the joys of not having a garage!
  20. cheers mate, will check the oil level sometime this week. filter and oil were changed about 10,000 miles ago I think. Worst case scenario is a new (secondhand) box which are around 200 quid. Any idea how much work is involved in replacing one, I know my way around a set of spanners, just never done an auto box before.
  21. car trouble...again.

  22. I have a 1995 mitsubishi rvr 4x4 with an auto box and a 2L petrol engine. Drove the car yesterday morning and all was fine, went to drive it last night and the problem reared its ugly head. When I selected 'drive' and tried to pull off, the car wouldnt move, gave it a few more revs, then it started to move slowly(but only at high revs). The only way I can describe whats going on is, it feels like a slipping clutch on a manual car. Anyone with any constructive advice on what the problem may be? cheers
  23. I agree with you on that point mate, a lot of the show deerhounds are really not to my liking, never had the pleasure of seeing the hounds from across the pond in the flesh, but from what I have seen from film and photo's they look like handy dogs. The cross that I own may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he ticks the boxes for me.
