  1. Sound advice if it has been a hard night. Give the same to my racing pigeons after long or hard race. (Especially if weather is warm or clammy)
  2. Instead of dock leaves try this.. Snap off a piece of elderberry twig from near the end of the branch, peel off just the bark , spit on it and rub it on nettle stings. Almost instant relief from pain and itching. Well worth remembering. Works on insect bites and stings , been used for years.
  3. Think Duramitex been banned or taken off the market. I still have some, use it in pigeon loft.

    Cider

Westerns vintage. Bloody strong (8.2) but a real cider , great taste . Comes in 5ooml bottles. Most supermarkets of any size should have it. If thats too strong for your taste I,d recommend Westerns Organic. Top cider producers in my opinnion. Happy tasting.
  5. Done it last week with my mates HMR . Head shot one and body shot the other. Didn,t know the other was there till I picked the first one up. Also done it with my 410 last season when rabbits were running back to the bury.
  6. Working whippet all the time. Something like Mike Browns lines , Lynperry , Anglesea field whippets etc. If your after a bitch they usally end up around 21 ths and yes they do catch alot more than rabbits. Excellent temperament. Only drawbacks I feel are firstly they can tear easy on wire or sticks etc. Secondly if where you run is very flinty or stoney their feet can cut. If its a lurcher and not a purebred you prefer I personally would go for a collie blooded dog. My own choice would be collie/greyhound back to Whippet. All the best. And remember must be off working parents.
  7. Had same problem. Took dog to vets and was told they were harvest mites ( what ever they are!!) was given Surolan ear drops. Seem to be doing the trick but the drops alone cost me £12. Not shaking his head much now though. Vet said these mites will disapear after first frost. Good luck.
  8. Strong legs and plenty of knuckle on the front legs, reckon whatever he has in him he will be a fair size. ( My guess for what its worth is that there is deffinatly some bedlington in him , just going on head shape etc) It matters not what cross he is anyway as long as he does what you want him for. Good luck with him and I hope he has/will bring you many years of fun (and free dinners!!)
  9. Sometimes I like to marinate rabbit in cider over night and then use the juice in the stew. With pigeons try this .. Wrap each breast in bacon and put with veg in a stew pot , cover with liver & bacon mix (schwatz) and do slowly. Big heap of mash.... making myself hungry now!!!
  10. Never knew that..... Cheers mate.
  11. Good call mate, Dog theives come in all shapes , sizes, creeds & colours. My Mrs deals with it every day of her working life. You can never be too carefull dogs indoors or out,( some theives are very clever). All the best .......... Now where did I put them SSG cartridges? (perfect deterent!!!)
  12. Good advice... Dog will stick by your side through woods , strange fields etc but as above be aware of distractions such as livestock, people or wildlife. Keep calling the dog to you and just touch or stoke its head and praise it. This gives the dog confidence and reassures it. In no time you will feel confident enough yourself that if you meet someone or something that catches the pups attention the dog will return on recall, but also remember as a pup they are still a baby and play comes before anything so if you don,t get instant recall just relax and don,t show anger when the pup returns.
  13. Personally I would use a tea bag (luke warm) . I allways bathe my racing pigeons eyes with this if they have been pecked whilst in the crate etc. Obviously if the eye has discharge ,looks damaged or does not improve in a day or two you need a vet. Just my oppinion based on years of expieriance with pigeons. The tea bag treatment has helped me many, many times . All the best .
  14. Top advice This is exactly what I do ,but I do put a collar on( and leave it on ) for a few days first. Also do keep an eye on him while he is dragging lead about , just incase he gets it caught up and panics.
  15. Whats the beam like mate? pencil or wide spread?
  16. Love my 410(Spanish s/s) and do like a day off from the 12. You,ve had a cracking day there mate and I bet it makes more of us dig out the smaller bores for some sport.
  17. Always used a cage trap with a bowl of milk. I cover one end in case it rains over night. Caught many people have lost working over the years. Good luck
  18. Handy piece of kit. Very usefull as stop net in hedgerow, but great crack if used on a gate at night and 6z nylon very cheap. Hemp obviously the best as bottom of nylon nets need keeping in place with small stones. You can set on gate and get some one to walk the field diagonally shaking a box of matches or similar if no dog is available while you hide out of sight to the side of it. Easy to conceal & set and perfect for the odd hare.
  19. Smoked mackerel skin is a great bait. When I worked on a trout farm we used smoked trout skins and always had results. Other baits that work if all the chocolate and peanut butter fail are skin off boiled bacon, crispy fried piece of sausage or lard you cooked your joint in.
  20. Welcome to the world of ferreting. Done it all my life. Certainly gets the heart drumming when you here the rabbits running under ground. Kept my boy on the straight and narrow. He does it for a job now!!!! Ferreting, shooting, lurchers and pigeon racing ... No finer sports in the world.
