  1. The wife and me picked 7 kilo yesterday afternoon. Brother-in-law in Neath wants a load to make sloe jam. Never tried it myself... any opinions?
  2. I dont like drink too sweet either, how much sugar are you talking per lb? 1/4 to 1/2 lb of caster sugar per lb of sloes depending on taste. I personally use just in between. I always put in the cinnamon stick. I,ve been here in this village 21 years & this is the best year for big sloes I,ve ever seen. Best of luck Coca mate and do try it as a marinade. Did some sloes in poteen once but I prefer that without the sloes!!!
  3. Forgot to say Sloe gin or Vodka is great to use for a marinade on pigeon breasts or any red meat (hare venison etc) so make plenty!!
  4. I personally will be picking sloes this Sunday. I have not tryed freezing I just use a blackthorn to prick them and then bottle straight away. Will be ready by Christmas and traditionally we all have a drop before going out New Years Eve. I use less sugar than most and always put 1 large or 2 small cinnamon sticks in with the berries/sugar and gin. Do the same for damson gin and vodka. The white powdery stuff on the outside of the sloe is, I belive a natural yeast.
  5. Read the post again....... I have ACCESS TO ..... I do not HAVE.. I was only asking for oppinions not a slagging off. What about the rabbits etc we catch ? Is that cruel or do you put them back where they belong?
  6. Think better left where they are. Quality looking creatures mind. Thanks all for your comments.
  7. Been mixy here for about 2 months, in N Hampshire, some areas (Watership Down) more affected than others. 2 mile away totally untouched. Hope it dies off soon. Caught a good few rabbits with scarring and bald patches around the eyes showing that increasing numbers are getting over it
  8. Polecats have to be removed from poultry farm (free range) and just had the idea rather than him kill them. Thought crossing may introduce qualities such as coat quality, health/strengh into line bred family possible better resistance to cuts/bites (from rats etc) from going bad. Maybe not such a good idea after all.
  9. Has anyone on here bred wild polecats or crossed them with ferrets. Have access to polecats but don,t know if it is worth a crack at breeding them or trying to cross them. Large size puts me off a bit. Plenty of them around here. Go mental when cage trapped, hissing, spitting and letting off scent glands. Soon quiet down though.
  10. Try marinadeing in sloe gin, then pan fry or BBQ. You,ll love it!!
  11. No 1- snipe, No 2- woodcock, Then rabbit, pigeon, venison & hare equal 3rd

  21. Latest crack around this area is ... They steal your dogs, wait for the reward posters etc to go up, then call from a mobile to arrange change over in some lonley layby so they can see there is no old bill about. This is big hare country around here, and every season finds plenty of dogs left on the fields, dumped. Either no good, stolen and/or will not return to thier owners or stealers. Many, many are never reunited with thier owners. PLEASE ,PLEASE GET YOUR DOGS CHIPPED....
