Michigan Bluebacks
Quixote replied to jasper65's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I cannae even hit the ones we have here, let alone bluebacks! -
Good idea..............think my image would suffer a wee bit if a pair of tights was part of my regular ferreting apparel though Lol Incidentally? Steve found a huge fitch hob dead on the road not far from where his hob was attacked & my jill ragged...............looks like he was most likely the culprit. Damn shame as he was in excellent condition. Nails recently trimmed, decent coat. Someone's obviously lost a good fert

Yep. I was really talking about replacing the hmr with a Mod7 or similar, but it didn't take me long to realise I'd be out of my depth. Don't know enough about it to justify spending heaps on a new rifle Apologies for the cock-up

So it was a vasectomy then? In that case, £100 does't sound that unreasonable.............. -

£100 for a 'castration'!!!???....................don't go back to that vet! 'Castration' is pretty much guaranteed to work, mate! Are you certain your vet didn't mean 'vasectomised'? Castration involves the complete removal of the testicles, so if it's done even halfway competently there's absolutely no chance of failure.......................you did make certain your vet can count to 'two', didn't you? -
C'mon guys! This is Roy Hattersley..............................? The fat spluttering idiot can't even walk the length of himself without stopping to catch his breath (and perhaps a quick sandwich to fortify his fat self?).................................anything he has to say holds very little credence with anyone these days, if indeed it ever did

No apology needed mate! Cheers for that! I've shot the Nato 7.62 at extended ranges, but can't imagine the old SLR being anywhere near as accurate as that..............not really designed for it, after all. I don't homeload any of my own rounds. I have a .22lr & .17hmr............I don't find I use the .17 enough to benefit from reloading, but after reading your post I might reconsider that thought though! Be interesting to see the difference between a factory round for it & a few carefully-thought out homeloads! Got a bit of research to do, it looks like!!!!

Funny that this post has come up! Steve & I were out last weekend & had a similar incident on a neighbouring farm.................Steve's hob Magoo came out of a bury with a cut to his neck & almost collapsed a few feet from the bury! My hob Pounce went down & immediately came back up, but my wee jill Chuckles shot down & wasn't seen for about half an hour...................we ended up digging for her & she came back up with her neck well-ragged & her back end soaking wet. We reckon there was a hob in there, so we've had a live-capture trap (baited with a dead

Bloody expensive rabbit! Damn good shot though....................... Can I ask (out of curiosity) why you'd want to be taking rabbits out at those ranges though? Or is it just the challenge of making the shot?

Nice litter Are they off poleys? I've got a litter of eight at 19 days just now........won't be long until they're out & about! Mine are poley Mum 9first timer too! She's got her sister in with her & the two of them are sharing the work) & albino Dad..............got a mixture of mitts & polecats out of the two of them, so I'm pretty pleased
-
Worth repeating though
-
If she's ready your hob will drag her into the nest & mate straight away..............once he's finished (and don't worry about the squealing!?), take her out straight away & let her recover. I don't leave them together for any longer than it takes for them to mate. Not fair on the jill

Then there you go.................. -
wont the rats bite my ferrets Quite possibly! But the main issue is that you'll be exposing your ferts to the rats environment. They're not the nicest of critters to be dealing with in the best of circumstances. Don't use your ferrets against rats.................quite apart from the risk of physical injury, rats carry a host of nasties such as leptospirosis, salmonella, weils disease, etc, & you certainly don't want to be messing about with them! If you care about your ferts, and yourself, don't use them! If you want rid of the rats, you first have to address the issue of harbour

I've only ever kept entire males until they're old enough for castration..............
-
Interesting! I've only ever had neutered hobs, so that's something I've not come across in over 20 years! Every day's a schoolday, huh?
-
Are they marks on the skin? Or are they actual objects in the fur? You'll not mistake ticks for anything else (although it's a wee bit early in the year for them) Ticks look like greyish-brown 'warts' that are actually attached to the skin & are generally about the size of a match head, getting larger as the tick feeds.....................yellow & orangey-brown 'dots' through the fur sound like mites. If it is mites, you can use a proprietory shampoo from pet stores for cats to get rid of them. Don't drench your fert in the stuff though, just use as directed on the bottle..........

Aye, not a million miles from where I am...........we're only about an hour from Callander (which is part of the Glen) I know the area pretty well. Been in to the Kingshouse a time or two as well............I spend a wee bit of time in & around Balquidder. They still do a nice pint of Campbells Good luck with the ferts! -

Make sure your vet understands that it's castration you want (well, not you personally ) and not a vasectomy!? Castration should be around the £60 mark, & you should get him back the same day...........vasectomies are much dearer as it involves more precise surgery. When you get them done, don't put them on shavings? It'll irritate the stiches, & the dust can lead to abscessing...........put them on fresh newspaper fro a week or so & keep an eye on the wound. It'll not be dramatic & shouldn't be red & inflamed at any stage. Your vet might want a follow-up a week or so -
For gods sake don't use the full-strength stuff for adult cats. It'll make them very ill at best, & kill them at worst! If they're really that bad, get some of the Bob Martin flea shampoo & give them a bath with a mere capful in about a gallon of warm water? That'll ease the problem until you can get some advice from your vet. Be aware that there are no flea treatments licensed for ferrets in the UK? So anything you use should only be on the advice of your vet. And make sure he or she has at least the faintest idea about ferrets?..............pedantic maybe, but if you care about your

I'd be very loathe to feed them carrion unless you know exactly how old it is? Rooks would be fine for them, but I'd try & get them whole rabbit if you intend to feed them on flesh. They're what's known as obligate carnivores, which means their digestive system is entirely geared up towards whole prey (including bones, skin & fur) I'd also avoid feeding them crow, or any other carnivore! If you can't guarantee them a regular fresh meat diet, then go for one of the complete feeds aimed at ferrets (as I said before...........minimum 35% protein). For two hobs you're looking at feedin

Actually..............(and I don't think a lot of people know this) there's a special institution for ferrets that's hidden in the hills of the Scottish Borders. It's a top-secret training school that hones your ferrets natural instincts & teaches it new skills.........such as the use of stealth tactics & methods to snipe bunnies using miniature crossbows & garottes. I've heard they've also developed a ferret-specific sniping rifle that uses expanding 0.00022 ammunition (it has to be that small, as the ferrets lose interest if the recoil's too hard, apparently), but personally I th

I think that stock's a bit on the long side for him?
-
Don't give them dog food! Ferrets need a protein content in their food that's far higher than you'll get in proprietory pet foods. If you can't give them a flesh diet, then you can get a specially-formulated feed for ferrets...........the protein content needs to be around 35% (check the packaging!) You're doing the right thing in handling them as much as possible, but I'd definately advise you have them castrated (not vasectomised) as soon as you can. This time of year (as pointed out already) they'll be stuffed full of hormones..............you've probably noticed their bellies are cove

Saluki cross? Best of luck, you'll need it
