Lovely looking dog! How old is she? I've a 6-month old black lab' bitch myself. I'm looking to use her for almost exactly the same purpose you're using Fern. Any tips as to how you trained her would be gratefully received as I'm very inexperienced with training dogs for working

Never heard this before, but I'm quite prepared to believe it................ The thing that would bother me though, is if the dog's eating it's own crap through some digestive disorder (and I'm no expert, so I've no idea what it could be!) surely that would just lead to a gradual malnutrition? What's the vet said about it?

Interested to see how you progress! I've got a 6 month old black lab' bitch that I've had for just over a month. So far I've just concentrated on the basics such as getting her settled into the household, 'sit', 'stay' & 'come here', etc (the 'coming here' of that particular command still needs some work though, I fear lol!) So far she's settled in very well. She's not shy of the gun as I've had her out already (she sat in the landy as I was shooting pigeons nearby.................she was fine with that, & even retrieved a thrown bird to hand once back in the garden!) I don't i

How many more times does poor old David Attenbourgh have to make it plain to you? Mustelids rely on a killing bite to the back of neck...................how the f*ck are they supposed to do that if the only target they have is a rabbits arse in a stop-end?
-
Nope! If I'm going to ask my wee beasts to work for me, then I accept that sometimes I need to spend a bit of time waiting for them. They work bloody hard for me mate, & I reckon it's only a right b*****d that will f*ck off & leave them to their fate. At the end of the day, YOU put the wee bugger down the hole in the first place, & it's incumbent upon you to wait for them to come back up! You want them to work? Well, if they're down the hole they're working!!! In nearly thirty years of ferreting, I have never lost a ferret beause I couldn't be arsed waiting for it
-
I have a poley hob that weighs in at nearly 2 kilos! Even he has come back out of a bury with cuts to his face............have a think on this, when have you ever heard of a stoat or weasel killing underground? They're tiny wee beasts, but they rely on the killing bite being made outwith the confines of a bury.
-
All the more reason why you should've waited until she showed up then, surely? What if she'd re-appeared the minute after you'd decided you were too cold to hang around!? You've got an inherent duty of care towards these animals mate. If you're going to keep them, then you need to take the responsibility for making sure that each time they go down a bury, you hang around long enough to make sure they get back! If you're not prepared to do that, then maybe your local butcher is the best source of rabbit for you.................

Ferrets were used by the ancient Egyptians (amongst many others!) to bolt rabbits over two thousand years ago...............they didn't bother f*cking around with what nature had designed, so why should we? A ferret is a ferret is a ferret! Treat them properly & they'll still do what nature intended, whether they're large or small
-
How long was she down for before you decided it was too cold to hang around? And why has it taken you three f*****g weeks to get back there to look for her? Jesus Christ!

It is very good advice, but as in this case the main aggressor already seems to have been identified, I'd be more inclined to remove her, & give the rest of them the chance to let the newcomer find her place without the constant & sustained agression from the main culprit. This is likely to have a similar effect in breaking up the established hierarchy, but without the constant need for readjustment. It'll also help to sort out the aggression from the bully, as it sounds like she's taken the dominant role without actually having the necessary skills to maintain it without resorting to

Glad you got her back mate! Goodjob!

Sounds as though it's the first season for both you, and the ferts? Absolutely no shame in that mate, we all started in exactly the same way! Just keep at it......the more you're out, the more you'll learn. As for the ferts? I know it's frustrating, but if they're youg 'uns it'll take a while for them to settle in to working. Each trip you take they'll be learning too, & as the more they're out the quicker they'll start to work the buries deeper as they gain confidence! Just keep at it mate, it'll come good
-
Keep on reading mate...........there's plenty more!!!
-
Exactly the way I see it too...............mine won't eat all of the fur & skin, but will clean a carcass right down to the bone & just leave the skin & bones. I generally take the gut out, but if I do give them an entire rabbit, they still clean the carcass of meat, but leave the gut completely untouched.

f**k off..........twat

There's nothing 'soft' about caring for your ferts mate...........quite the opposite, in fact. There're far too many on here who seem to think their ferts are machines, to be used & abused as they see fit because they're too stupid & thoughtless to appreciate that you only get the best out of anything by treating it with respect & consideration................
-
This place doesn't half have some morons posting...........................and no doubt the negative replies will include most of the idiots I've deliberately insulted in the past. Dickheads
-
No mate. It won't work as a miracle cure! But as I said, if she's taking it she's at least getting some fluids..................
-
If she's not being aggressive (hard to imagine if she's gum-deep in your finger, I know), but just defensive & unsure, the scent of the ferretone should distract her as it'll be far more attractive to her than your fingers (especially if they've been down the front of your trousers most of the day )

It's a food supplement that most ferts seem to absolutely love, mate. It's not medicinal as such, but does contain various vitamins, amino acids & other supplements that helps keep them in tip top condition, as well as making things like nip-training & nail-clipping a helluva lot easier! I generally get it from here
-
That's ok if they're out a lot, but some only work their ferts every couple of weeks or so............. When mine need doing, I place them on a workbench with some ferretone on a tile. While they're busy licking it up, I clip them while they stand. It works with even the 'wriggliest' of ferts as you're not constantly trying to get them in the right position
-
Serious kudos for digging down to him! From what I've seen here so far, a lot would have buggered off home & left him to his fate! Nice to see someone prepared to put the effort in to recover a fert. Nice one mate, bet you're relieved as hell!
-
I must admit I'd have had any of mine along to the vets before now.........Higgins makes a good point though! Ferts are cheap to replace, & vet fees are undeniably a rip-off. But what price do you put on an animal that's served you well & asks for nothing more than food, water & attention to their welfare? Ferts are masters at hiding injury & illness, so if she really doesn't appear to be well, then she almost certainly isn't! Best advice I can offer now is to keep her warm, quiet & make sure she has water available................the good news is, if she's taking
-
As mentioned already, ferts tolerate the cold very well. Just make sure that their sleeping compartment's draught-free & you'll have no problems
-
Again, as above.............it's all strange to her at the moment & she's likely very unsettled. I wouldn't try to lift her for the next couple of days if she's trying to bite? Rather, just clench your fist & offer her a knuckle? If she's really determined to take chunks out of you it might be an idea to keep a distraction such as ferretone (or olive oil & honey) handy to get her to unlatch. You'll likely still have a couple of painful episodes if she's being defensive, but you won't suffer too much before she learns you're not a threat to her, & settles down
