Today all "22 centrefires" use bullets of the same diameter, 0.224". The different rounds, ie .22Hornet .222, .223, 22-250, 220 Swift . . .use different cartridges with different chamberings. The 22-250 has, I think, the biggest capacity of any commercial cartridge, although the Swift may still be bigger. .243 is essentially the next step up, at 6mm bullet diameter. 6.5 is the next. Not very helpful I'm afraid bro. This really is a complex subject! If you want advice on specific calibres get back to us.

Good question mate. Just the way it is I'm afraid. Minimum legal calibre for Roe, Fallow, Red and Sika in England and Wales is .243/6mm. Damn stupid, if only because Muntjac can be bigger than Roe yet it is legal to shoot Muntjac or CWD with .220 CF. So you expect our laws to make sense? Ric

If you are mainly interested in long range target shooting you should be looking at 6mm br or 6mm ppc. Ignore anything from the previous poster because he doesn't know what he's talking about. Ric

OK, couple of points here. First, good photos there mate, well done. Second, there are no "Wild Goats" in the UK. These are "Feral Goats"; they have escaped or been released from domestic stock. The idea of breeding goats for release is just stupid. They are very destructive of crops and saplings and release of destructive species is a criminal offence. They are legal quarry if they are damaging crops or saplings. Minimum legal calibre in the UK is .243. High power .220 CF is ok in Eire. I would not want to kill them for the sake of it cos they look so good but if they are causing damage, t

Well chaps I finally got fed up with all the spellings. First thing I have to do is put my hand up and say "Yes yer Honour I got it wrong." The 1998 edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary gives the spelling as "ricochet". It goes on to give the verb forms as EITHER "ricocheting, ricocheted" OR ricochetting, ricochetted". Naff all to do with hunting but I like to get my terminology correct. One C two Ts. Ric

You say you were shooting on the Downs. Soils can be very deceptive, and the chalk soil of the Downs has a lot of flint inclusions, off which you are getting your riccochets. As stated, HMR should be a lot better. Ric

OK so further comments make it clear that you may have a problem. You should be able to get a half-hour session with a solicitor without a prior appointment. Make a few phone calls first thing tomorrow and check out your legal position. It'll cost nowt and could save you a lot of shite down range. ATB Ric

Bunch of lying b'staards. You could legally FFS have been walking home with your gun in a slipcase. Since when does the status of your driving licence have any relevance to the status of your FAC? Still, keep schtum for a day or two. So long as you get your gun back and your driving licence sorted it ain't worth the hassle of going eyeball to eyeball with the man. I don't intend to get too involved here, but yes Aaron I take your point. The simple fact is that in a heavily farmed country like Britain deer are pests. They need to be controlled and the best and most humane way to do that is by shooting with CF rifles. If the honey buggers don't like it let them come up with a better alternative. Poison? Deer in the UK have no natural predators and if we "leave it to Nature" we're gonna lose a lot of crops. I'd suggest a reality check but the antis have lost all touch with reality. Ric -
