  2. I have to disagree with TT here. They will have equal light gathering at the eye piece because they are both 7:1 objective diameter (in mm)to magnification. I suspect you would be better off with the 6x42 because 1.) 8x is a lot for close shots, and 2.) you can mount it closer to the line of the barrel, reducing parallax. Ric
  3. I've just found this site. Releasing vermin species into the wild is illegal as it is considered cruel. www.pestgo4u/com Sorry, can't get the link to work Ric
  4. You are on the nail there. By the same token, antis go spare at the word "hunting"! Ric
  5. I took it as read that the cubs would have to be dug out so the earth would be wrecked anyway. I assume you would reach in bare handed and pull 'em out one at a time. Ric
  6. Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 The law permits: The mercy killing of a seriously injured bird if it is unlikely to recover. so reading this plonkers first post, he shot a bird in a tree with a broken wing, I'll repeat myself, is he a certified vet that can make a decision just by looking from afar, I doubt it, and I doubt that excuse could be used in a court of law, fine if you find a wounded animal by the roadside after being hit by a car, but "in a tree" shit, every hunter out there would be using that excuse to shoot anything that moves Please yer Honour, I didn't shoot
  7. Build a fecking bridge and get over it, and I well remember the Thatcher years, at least the country had a modicum of respect and at least when the tories were shafting you they looked you in the eye whilst doing it, not like this mob pretending to be for the working man. A quick question, what the hell have obese kids got to do with Thatcher, lay that firmly at this mobs door, every childhood pastime banned by the PC brigade and fat kids reared by fat idle parents paid by this government to sit on their arse. Who grew up in the eighties under guess who? "There is no such thing as soc
  8. I'm from the East Midlands. I've worked in engineering, shoe making, and hosiery manufacture. Try getting a job in a trade that doesn't exist anymore. I'm probably one of the oldest members of THL. I lived through Maggie's "Great years". Poacher was right when he said she has got what she deserved - senile dementia. Me, I reckon she was as mad as a snake from day one. Remember when she was Minister for Health and she stopped free milk for schoolchildren? The country couldn't afford 1/3rd of a pint of milk for wee kiddies. We now have the most obese kids in Europe. Yeah, a great leader. EVIL OL
  9. TBH Nik, I'm not entirely sure. But my point still stands! Far more cruelty involved than if the honey buggers had stayed out of it. I think you will find it is illegal to release trapped urban foxes into the wild, although the arsepac do it regularly. Ric
  10. Good question, to which I must reply "Dunno". I can imagine someone shooting the vixen, or bolting her with dogs, and leaving the cubs to die, much though I dislike the idea. But how the honey buggers got hold of them I simply do not know. The story was in The Times and there was a photo of these pwitty ickle foxes with Mr Basil . My point stands though. Raise them to either die unpleasantly or become serious pests? Or kill 'em quick and clean? I know my choice, and I'll bet yours would be the same. Ric
  11. This one has bothered me a bit. Straight bronze is, as DB said, softer than steel. BUT! phosphor bronze has, surprise surprise, phosphorus included in the alloy mix, and it can be very hard indeed - certainly much harder than mild steel. Brushes should be made from a flexible alloy, so there should be no problem. But who knows how close the batch control is? I'd suggest regular cleaning with nylon brushes - but I have to admit to being Mr Armchair Shooter. On the other hand, when I worked in a boatyard we used phosphor bronze in preference to 18/8 stainless steel because it was harder (and mor
  12. As said, a faster twist rate will stabilise longer (it's the length that matters ducky!) ie heavier bullets better. Where you may have a problem is with thin-jacketed light (short) fragmenting bullets at high MV. If they are spinning too fast they can break up in flight due to excassive centrifugal force. It is very unlikely to be a problem with factory ammo but if you go for hot handloads you may have a problem. Ric
  13. I read a couple of days ago about a "wildlife conservation" group who are raising some fox cubs that were abandoned by the vixen when the earth was disturbed. They have been given a Basil Brush toy to cuddle up to. AAH. Isn't that sweet. Pretty likkle baby foxy-woxes playing with their cuddly toy. What was not reported was what will happen when they grow up into vicious little predators. It happens to be illegal to release pest species into the wild. So do they end up in a zoo? Not many people going to be very interested to see them. Kill the little fluckers? Ooh no that would be so cruel. I'd
  14. Seconds out of the ring and let's see a good clean fight. Ric
  15. As said, it's the wee lad who matters now. She will live on in him. I'm sure the lasses on here will be glad to help with advice if needed. Ric
  16. But does shooting the bird in a tree count as mercy killing? I have twice wrung the necks of injured song birds, once a thrush that had been clipped by a car, once a blackbird that had been ripped up by a cat. Quick clean death both times. But if you go to shoot a bird in a tree and it moves at the last moment you could make its suffering worse. Not to mention the question of what the OP was doing with a gun in the first place. Ric

  18. Have a look at the posts on THL and FALL ABOUT LAFFING Ric
  19. On the contrary, the Mad Handbag hated the EU. She was living in the past, just like so many right wing politicians today. It's all very well screaming "When we had our Empire . . .bla bla bla". Problem is, we don't have our "Empire" any more. Before you start shrieking about how "Oh but if only" take a reality check. THE WORLD HAS CHANGED. You may not like it but you have to live with it. Of course, you can always retreat into your fantasy world . . .
  20. Poacher, You're just an old Leftie. You are as much of a class warrior as me! We go back a long way , , ,
  21. Alastair, darling, has produced a Keynesian, Old Labour budget. And right to do so. It's pump-priming and it has to be done. All countries affected by the recession have shifted to Keynesian economic models. There is little point in sorting out the supply side until you have regenerated demand. I'm off out for some cider before the tax goes on new deliveries. Ric
  22. I did say that I was referring to the female Harpy Eagle which weighs 9kg/20lbs and can lift her own weight. I wish some people would take the trouble to read my post before going off on one. I'm happy to accept that a full grown Staffie would be too heavy. The Eagle would end up regretting trying anyway! Ric
  23. Nik, Peak - I agree totally. Blair set out to out-Thatcher Thatcher. He and his New Labour cronies swallowed Friedmannite monetarism hook line and sinker. More importantly, so did Reagan. The fact remains that it was Thatcher who started the ball rolling. With apologies to the OP Keynesian ning Ric
  24. It was The Mad Handbag whose near total deregulation of the financial system led directly to the current recession. Ric (Armed with large spoon)
