i don't see the difference as being that big......a lab has to sit and wait at the peg with game at times everywhere lots of stimulation other dogs noise etc then eventually it's sent to pick up a strong runner, maybe go through cover or water with a jump or two thrown in..........a lurcher has to sit and wait while the nets are set again lots of stimulation ferrets scratching scents etc then the ferrets go in more stimulation a rabbit hits the net still wait....wait then a second comes from the same hole a real strong runner eh it finds temporary shelter in some rushes or nettles before being

slightly off topic but one of the best picking up dogs i've seen and it was a long time ago was a german shepherd bitch a big fierce looking thing but steady as a rock, very athletic, great nose and a soft mouth

BORDER COLLIE VS BEARDIE COLLIE!!!!!
birddog replied to kimbokenneth's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think worker to worker you will have a good chance of some good pups, but still down to the owner to put the time in to bring the dog on!! my own view is the sire must be top class proven! the dam although must be a worker its not as important as i have seen average track dog through good lurcher pups in the past!!! in the racing game anyone with the stud fee can take any bitch to a quality stud dog so more emphasis is placed on the bitches qualities and these stud dogs are producing lots of pups and in more cases than not its the pups from a good well bred bitch that make the grade -
skycat, the only lasting legacy from me being to control orientated when she was younger seems to be a lack of confidence in certain situations, she loves to mark and because of the control thing (i think) at times it's more of a point with a wagging tail she'll stand for 10 min before being told to fetch or flush and she's a retrieve aholic shoes, papers, mail just about anything even a wayward ferret once but i think i'd maybe have given her head more as a pup if i were doing it again but hey we're all smart arses with hindsight eh i don't think i've spoiled her but maybe if i'd let her work

BORDER COLLIE VS BEARDIE COLLIE!!!!!

as most know i'm a fan of the collie cross but it would be interesting to find out how many from a litter of pups that don't make the grade, were all 'bryn's' litter as good? maybe ray can join in... the same with my 'jazz' ? i know of one that didn't make it...........and going to the next step....... mating 'bryn' to 'jazz' what percentage of pups would make it? both good dogs and proven workers on all sorts of game but would their pups have it? -
digital cameras make it easy take a hundred pics ones gonna be ok ye they do bud i was just geting used to mine when i tuk those but i've now upped the anti so to speak.......got a digital video machine thingy the other day.......not really sussed all the touch screen whatsits, but apparently a non technophobe can freeze frame images and still get a 12 point something megapixel image ( i know the terms ) from somewhere deep in the bowels of the thing..........i'm gonna take it down the racing tonight.......watch this space

i agree with loads there skycat and as a pup my collie cross was all about control, control when feretting sitting and staying where she was put till she gained enough experience, leaving netted(purse and long nets) rabbits alone etc, more control learning lamping so that now she works off the lead letting me decide for the most part what and when she runs, even more control working cover being up enough to go through nettles (she hates them) etc but being under control enough to be obedient and stay within gunshot range (that was a hard one) but i learned when using a gate net that i'd been t

Scotland Shows, what do they lack?
birddog replied to alimac's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
scone is ace but no lurchers, they say its because its basc organised but basc organised fairs down south have lurchers, glamis is going downhill badly last year next to no stalls none on fishing, no nets or net gear,( although i did get a deal on braided line from a falconry guy) no proper dog food but you could get double glazing or organise your next hols in mauritious and glamis is up there with the most expensive entry fees. with these bigger events hopefully the recession will make the organisers remember who their bread and butter punters are -

i'll be the 1st then bob.............your pish on the lure but seriously wev'e spoken about hurdles maybe some of the wise men on here can advise on what to use and where to get good safe hurdles -
we need more guys like you in the lurcher world, i have a collie x that works cover well, takes hand signals, retrieves to the gun and sits when she flushes deer, not to everyones taste but i'm not going to risk losing lamping and ferreting permission on keepered ground by using an unruly dog, she has a strong prey drive but it's not rocket science to encourage some behaviour on some game and different behaviour on others, you can with a bit of work even alter the prey species on different ground / permission ie she knows on certain places certain species are out of bounds, she'll take a few s

andy, with obvious bull and collie blood in the mix, which do you rate more?

BORDER COLLIE VS BEARDIE COLLIE!!!!!
birddog replied to kimbokenneth's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
ive had a few collie x's, i had my 1st as a pup in the 70's (jeez i'm old) over the years they suit me. beardies have a reputation for being headstrong....is that not where they get their drive? beardies are used to work away with sheep a lot more than borders.........is this why some lurcher guys struggle to adapt to them? borders are easier to train more people orientated.........is this why they are more popular as a cross? as with all crosses the mixing of different blood is great in theory and if you end up with the wrong mix of genes (which can be pot luck) it could be a real nightmare -
