who told you im not that old your youthful good looks and friendly optimism tell me that -
the wagging tail........ whether it's at a hole or a patch of cover it's a cert a little encouragement and she'll pounce into cover and bingo....wheres the curry sauce

no dog was ever spoiled by late starting but plenty are ruined by starting too young, i know it's hard but a long time ago i was young with my first lurcher but i had an older wiser mentor who kept my brakes on, be cool you and your pup have years together. like 'bearinater' says as she progresses she will begin to mark herself its up to you to recognise her body language, some are head down the hole types, others whine, some point, others scratch the ground i have one who wags her tail their all different, watch her hunt, watch what happens when you put a bunny to ground you'll learn what he

Scotland arbroaths 1st meet up on wedesday night

bob, sorry bud theres none of the original members we maybe did it in the 's but i had relations that raced in arbroath in the 30's and ffs even bill's no that auld, the people who are mumping need to have a proper look.....there was 10wk old pups, primary school kids, pregnant women, pensioners, self employed businessmen etc a great cross section......... some of these holier than thou types really need to wake up..........because a staffy nailed a cat in a scheme ?????????? and they say ignorance is bliss -
be patient theres really no hurry and 'stay' is immense when learning the ferreting game, she's still a babe it'll all click in a few months
-
for variety at that age i like retrieving in the dark i believe it helps them pick up sitters later on, don't encourage marking it's too easy to encourage false marking, i'm a big fan of 'stay' a really handy command but don't overdo it they don't like it too much, if youv'e started her jumping keep the sessions short and the hurdles low wer'e looking for a command and an action height will come soon enough good luck with her she sounds the part, what about a pic or two

No disrespect Andy but if you did go down the line of a grey would you use a track dog????? Or would you use a dog that's been tested in the field as there are many out there. I feel as it would hold 50% of the next off springs genes I would want to know more then just how fast it can run in a straight line. But hey that's just my opinion Nigh on all Greyhounds will kill ANYTHING and that goes for track dogs too,if they run for 3 or 4 years chasing nothing other than an imitation rabbit or a rag with a bag tied to it believe you me they will destroy anything with a pulse..like i said

think theyv'e maybe had a goodyear sorry i'd better tread carefully

Can you read? I said I would not add pure to my dogs be that collie, greyhound or bull. What I have said is I would CONSIDER using a lurcher i have seen run which was sired by a pure greyhound . I would also CONSIDER using one sired by a pure collie or bull. BUT I would look else where in a line 1st is that plain enough for you to understand? or are you going to try and twist what I say again! is that happy fathers day to the greyhound, the collie or the lurcher?......................sorry guy's i had to..........it's the voices

she looks real smart mate and still young need to put up a pic or two when she's mature

some of mine

one of mine has 3/16 border collie blood and has stalked daytime (never on the lamp yet) is it not a worry putting so much collie into the mix?
-
great topic guys keep it going...........a wee question though..........if it's not thought the done thing to put a pure greyhound into the line, why put a pure collie in?
-
as they are both my mutts i thought i'd put in my tuppence...the hancock cross is 3/8 beardie / border and at 30 or 40 yds they were levelish, she has had 3 good winters ( her 1st she wasn't much more than a pup) she has by far more multi run stamina and a much quicker recovery rate....if we rerun the race 15 or 20 times i know who i'd have my money on, i'd rather it went 20 or 30 times but that wouldn't be fair on the young un. the deerhoundy x has excellent greyhound blood from her mothers side including english and scottish derby winners....she was still very much a pup last winter although

just read this entire topic maybe because i like whippets and............. unbelievable you really couldn't make it up..............many posters on here need to look at the whole topic then look in the mirror -
I do not want a Lurcher to replace a Gundog but to supplement it. If during a daily walk a Spaniel hunts up a rabbit and flushes it from it's seat, the Spaniel should sit(reinforced by whistle command) and remain seated until asked to continue to hunt or to retrieve the shot rabbit. In the requirements I have outlined in my original question, instead of shooting the rabbit, if a Lurcher was present it could be sent to pursue and hopefully catch the prey. Very much like how a Dogs hunts game for a Hawk or Falcon. I see little difficulty in keeping a Lurcher with me whilst fishing because,

BORDER COLLIE VS BEARDIE COLLIE!!!!!
birddog replied to kimbokenneth's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think worker to worker you will have a good chance of some good pups, but still down to the owner to put the time in to bring the dog on!! my own view is the sire must be top class proven! the dam although must be a worker its not as important as i have seen average track dog through good lurcher pups in the past!!! Thats all very well and I totally agree on worker to worker, but lets not forget bad conformation as that is not down to the 'owner'. With genetics things can pop up and make what would be(or is) a 'good worker' a failer due to physical problems which again will effect the %
