birddog replied to ferret features's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
there was a serious topic a few months ago one here re this, the pup had minor op and appears a1 now and training going good, theres loads of gen on the internet and it's far more common than most realise -

happy birthday from me and mrs birddog, look on the positives....it'll not take much work to adapt a zimmer to carry a few purse nets eh

That imho would make showing even more seriouse having those who have walked the walk just judgeing lurcher shows after all its just supposed to be fun and not taken too seriouse as some would have us believe. but maybe just maybe being more serious could be a good thing with proper working lads putting up proper working dogs and the pretty dogs that have never 'walked the walk' would fade into the past
-
i think the one big thing that could help unify the show guys and the working guys would be some kind of uniformity of thought or consistency of judging, using guys that have never worked their dogs no matter how qualified through racing, breeding or indeed judging kc hounds is where shows fall flat, we don't need a standard set out (god forbid) but honesty and integrity are sadly lacking. someone whos torn their arse jumping fences at night in a hurry is far more preferable than mrs hyphenated ladeeda

both my bitches were bred entirely for work, they both work perhaps sometimes a tad too hard in the dark winter months, both have won rosettes, does that make them show ponies? i'm considering breeding my older bitch next year and there are show and race winning dogs in my home town but i'm looking to use a dog from top class proven lines who himself has worked well (he's also won shows) but with a round trip of over 600 miles hardly local eh. i've also judged quite a few shows over the years and always tried to put up workers not always possible i've put up lame dogs whose conformation was sp

used to be really good but the last few years its went downhill, last year nae fishing stalls or netmaking gear now nae lurcher or terrier show, and its expensive to get in, a real pity cos this was my local show
-
got a few that havn't been shown i've also got some pre ban type pics but not sure about putting them up from this to this her dad and again sam and storm another of gin i was hoping that some of the other owners of this litter would have jumped in by now though
-
cheers kev, never noticed it before but belle has that same i'll have you look that her mum has, just a wee add for all when i picked the pup up i tried to pat her mum maybe 4 times in an hour or so and she had me every time kev says she'd never been like that with anyone before i came back to scotland paranoid, she looks ace in that pic kev was that before the broken leg?
-
i've got them all bar the sam and storm one, regarding the possible minshaw connection i've been on to frankel to see if he can dig up any info through his contacts, kev put up some pics of stan and jenny and if you have any of molly that'll just about complete the picture
-
according to what i've got 'gin' was by 'thorn' out of a bitch that was also by 'thorn' i have a picture of 'gin' and she is of a similar stamp to 'thorn' but i've not sussed how to get it out of a message and onto a post, maybe when the young lad gets up he'll help his dad
-
wish i'd had the sense to do that when i was younger, top class romany, but according to the deerhound topic you apparently know little about other types, young grasshopper has much to learn i think. according to my understanding stan her father is by sam who is by storm out of jin. ive got conflicting data on stan's dam..molly but i'll leave it to kev or jan to clarify
-
all this history is great guys and fascinating to find out about her ancestors, ive got lots of pics from kev but no scanner maybe he could help show them again, any joy on more about pies black dog romany ?

I'll try and get some photos of the smooth bitch for you, she went to the same home as one of my pups and I'm still in touch with them on the subject of your pup has the ben dog we spoke about matured well?
-
real nice bitch that, and sounds like she is doing ok as well . If i am right she is about 1/4 deerhound to running dog, i think prob wrong though lol. And her size is spot on for any quarry, Bryn my 1x collie grey is 25in but racey get loads of rabbits, so she just bit bigger and not heavy you would good bags no prob. you liked whins dogs then, they are fast + agile dogs .! aye ray she's coming on mate but like ive said this winter will tell, don't know the name of his fawn dog you could see the saluki influence and it seemed to have all the right bits in all the right places and
-
well aye man, it's canny like, ta muchly cp and she gives them non peds a race as well, you will for sure mate she's got the brindle dog in docherty's book twice in her pedigree, apparently he was mated to his daughter if that jogs anything mate

You struck lucky when you found her birddog You're right Nuala is an aunt, she is out of Stan's litter sister Judy. is judy not an aunt? so nuala is a cousin then, and i think the dog romany posted is sophie Yes you're right birddog, its Monday morning and Im half asleep Where does Sophie come in, is she in Mollies breeding? don't think so, mollie was 3/4 bred as far as i know maybe romany was guessing a wee bit or maybe having a wee blond moment, i think now some more details have been added he'll suss it out more
-
she's looking really smart mate, squarer, stronger really smart. have you a recent pic of the smooth blue sister kev? we'll need to try and keep to the wee hunting date come the winter time eh

thanks for the comments guys really appreciated , to think we only got her cos she was the last and smallest in the litter and my missus and teenage daughter (who's left home now) have me wrapped round their little fingers. conditioning her is hard work cos she's a fussy little sod but wer'e getting there, her retrieve is not what i'd like but she's fast, stays and has a decent mouth and had a few decent nights jan/ feb this winter will tell us more, for those in the know her dad was 'stan' and her aunt (maybe cousin) is 'keeps' on here smart bitch 'nuala'. were in ne scotland up at 5.30, 4h
