  1. I've heard some opinions that polecat ferrets work better and deeper than whites. My best have been whites, but i have had more of them. (just personal preference-easier to see in cover.)Ive seen good workers of both types. Whats your opinion and why?
  2. The more time your dog spends with you,the better the bond. Unless you are one of the "aint worth keeping" brigade, who does not put the time in then sells the dog as crap. My lurcher lives in and is a real fool around the house. He also works with me every day (pest control) and is a different animal when in work mode. I know what he is doing and telling me at work because he is with me a lot and i can read him. Better out than in? in a word-no.
  3. Sorry-off topic but love the clint smith quotes shotgunsniper!!
  4. Good point scent. A lot of "terriermen" are the same with-here goes.....the Plummer. However much they're knocked, there is no breed of terrier with a better nose.
  5. Spot on again FD, its all about perseverance not all dogs gell in ther first few digs and perserverance can be taught as well as bred. If you are the quiting sort then more often than not you're dog will be of the same persuasion, its not all about nose.
  6. As mentioned, old single fold up .410. Cut the barrel down to 24"-minimum legal length for S.G. licence-jobs a good un!
  7. i agree mate. And for me finally getting to a point with a little help from some of the older big names producing some steady away old fashioned terriers. Not the show types. Not that there is anything wrong with that, i just cant seem to get that mix right. Not that im worried about looks 20 odd years ago you went to look at a litter of terrier pups checked the teeth and feet and bought one because of the parents and what you had seen them do or been told .the breeding in some dogs these days is gross (interbred to the extent that deformities in the litters are regular some of which are n
  8. unless the owner has paid for a made dog . The thread is what makes a good dog man.Last year i paid for new kennel to be build dosent make me a bricky i know mate ,but what i ment was ,if some one new to the game bought a made doge ,those that did not know would think he was a good dog man, when realy ,YOU ARE BORN ONE Those that buy made dogs are easy to spot-they usually f**k them up. In any case not many GOOD dogs get sold.

  14. Very true, but in what way are the offspring better if the base line (malamute, collie etc) is the bitch?
  15. It is probably more a case of one of the parents being "homozygous" (or "prepotent"). this could be the dog or bitch, that stamps its type in its offspring. This can also show in characteristics as well as appearance. Genuine question-Flint08 has mentioned this before in his malamute x. Has the reverse been tried to compare? (grey bitch x mal dog?) What does the bitch "bring to the party" that the dog does not? Interesting topic.

  20. Any dog needs to be run regularly to build the stamina to catch numbers consistently. You also need ground with numbers to catch!
  21. My rough wheaten x bitch produced a smooth dog with a head like a bucket, that would have passed for a first x bull. This was out of a first x deerhound x greyhound dog. The others were broken and rough coated. Game as hell too.
  22. Tidy looking Russells GF. Nice to see the youngsters out too.
