my mate who is a Blacksmith Welder has made this stopnet basket. to LCs instructions, its only tacked, not finished, LC is coming up for a visit next week, and will let him have a look.

Never had boosters, and never had any problems, but if your Jukel is insured, have a look at the small print, as ive heard in some insurances, if inocs are not kept up to date, then your not insured. Also if you go away, and need to use kennels, their inocs have to be up to date. which means boosters.

As above i use mine a lot, with the 8ft box, I think they are the better collar, than the other mark 1 collar.
-
I would go for the Bulldog make, some like the rabbit grafter which i use, and others prefer the round mouth. its a matter of preference. I purchased mine 35 years ago, and have never needed to replace anything. And its seen a lot of work.

This Whippet X Bedlington, Would do everything a terrier would, apart from going to ground, she would work heavy cover, mark, quiet and steady round the burys. But the beauty of this cross, was she would regularly take rabbits on the open, she had the speed. And also did a bit of lamping with her, for a couple of Seasons I worked her along with a pure Bedlington. And on ferreting, pushing Rabbits from cover, she was the better of the two. She was 18 inches to the shoulder.

I worked A Whippet X Bedlington for 9 Seasons, i started her of ferreting, then later moved her into lamping. Theres no way, im saying they are a good lamping cross, there's better crosses out there, if that's your game. And although they excel at the Ferreting, that's not to say, you cant enjoy a bit of lamping. I could regularly take 4, 5, and 6. i know these are silly numbers, but I did enjoy it, and so did the Bitch.

I bought this, just when out for a mooch, but it would never replace my Bulldog Rabbiting spade, its 35 years old, seen some graft, and never needed anything replaced.

Hi Browny, Welcome to the world of Ferreting. I have read a few books on the subject, and if you are a reader, then I would go for, Ferreting An Essential Guide, by Simon Whitehead, tells you all you need to know, and is up to date. Even having a section on how to use Debens new Mark 3 Ferret Finder. Or if you prefer DVDs contact mrpit on here, he sells them in threes very reasonably. I would go for Ferrets and Ferreting by Simon Whitehead, Coney Catcher vol 1 Coney Catcher vol 2. Theres also lots of stuff on ferreting, and how to use finders on Youtube. You don't say what Gender your

If you are not doing night work, and the long net is for daylight Ferreting, you may be better with two 25 yarders, and a couple of five yard stop nets.

Looks like you Lads are going to have good sport, when you can afford it, get some spun poly nets there's info on the top of the page who makes them, and get yourself a pair of secateurs. Handy for clearing round the burys. Some cocktail sticks, handy for tree burys if you have any where you go. you stick a couple in the bark and hang the net from them. and if you have sent for a finder, you will need a spade.

Snap Robbo, my best Ferreting partner in 45 years of ferreting was a genuine first cross Whippet X Bedlington.

Dimenisons For A Double Ferret Box
Country Joe replied to loveferreting's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
You have to think weight, weight and more weight, the bigger it will be. the heavier. -
Because i have plenty of time on my hands, I skin, gut, and bone the rabbit, the rabbit meat goes into pound bags and frozen for a fortnight, and is fed raw to the Whippet, the carcass which contains meat goes to the ferts. this is also bagged and frozen. In the Summer, this is fed to them right through the Winter months. In the Summer, when Flies are around, I feed complete.

I have managed to persuade my Wife to accompany me on some of my trips. I have to say she is a reluctant ferreter. But she carries the ferret box, and the spade, and is now helping to put down and lift the nets. Had a job at first, to get her to stop talking, and keep quiet. But she is now learning a bit of fieldcraft. Turning out a handy worker, as a lot of my Ferreting is hedges. go out and enjoy your self. but remember it is addictive. I went out 40 years ago with an old Poacher, and im still at it. Look forward to more of your posts.

TC. I had been taught by the old poachers over 40 years ago how to net the sets at night, and as you know this was not easy, as these old guys would not show you a birds nest, So although i had done the trad method for years, I had never seen a basket. And so with LC coming to visit me, I saw the advantage of this system. Especially with daytime ferreting, and i reckon if i had used this method years ago, i may have put more rabbits in the bag. Longnetters today have it easy, with forums and DVDs, when i learned from these old guys i went the same way, keeping to myself, as they used to t

I think on this forum we are in debt to LC who has not kept his idea of improving net basket to himself. Putting up how to make it with photos, and measurements. He has told me, he has been receiving four pms per day, for requests to make them. Im sure if Nelson can make them, to the original quality, he should do well. having met the man, who spent a morning with me, he is a true Gent. .

Would rather get him steady, couldn't be bothered to tie dogs up at every holding bury.
-
When having to dig, and break through, I leave the tube intact. I block the hole, with a suitable size stone then back fill. Leaving bury nice and tidy. I also find the odd nets, but they are always shite. theres been a few ferts being found. These young uns, never have finders.
-
As been said, just keep getting them out and watching whats going on, then it should click, but you must have a dog thats steady with the ferts.
