  1. Im just back left at 12 noon back 1.30pm, Been having bother with Whippets stopper, but taped it, and he was fine. Whippet marked two burys that held, three nice big clean rabbits. Hit the nets like an express train. Now i know there are lads on here, that three Rabbits would be crap but im fine with that. Great day, nice weather for a change, no stick ups, so no chance to christen my new mini spade, Cant beat this retirement game.
  2. Thanks Bosun, and Socks, Yeh I reckon you are right, pad is not to bad, and healing. I think next time Ferreting, I may put a strip of vetwrap round the stopper, just for a wee bit of protection.
  3. My reason for asking this question was because, the dog had just sliced the top of one stopper, probably a stone. And it was my Vet that said to use salt water three times per day to harden the pad on this stopper, I just thought, there may be better alternatives out there, and was interested what they are. Had a look at some Greyhound Forums, but what some find as beneficial, others will slate.
  4. Very good, mine should be delivered today, Maybe they should change the name, to Ferret mooching Vest.
  5. Im doing alright, four and five rabbits every time out, this would be crap for most, but i just use them to feed the Whippet and Ferts, So this amount is enough for me.
  6. think i will leave it, no need to worry about road work or free running or work, as this dog is as fit as a fleah, i think he was just unlucky slicing the pad on a stone or piece of glass, whilst chasing a Buggsy. Thanks all for your help. CJ,
  7. 53 views, and one reply, tut tut, where are Skycat and Sandymere?
  8. Aye a ferret a farm, that has some dodgy fencing. Sheep mesh fencing, barb on top, and fence stabs, real shaky. I could imagine the Fermer finding me hinging wi the great coat. :cray:
  9. Looked this up on a greyhound forum, there are many remedies, but two that kept being mentioned, was dabbing the pad with surgical spirt to harden. and Padsanol ointment. Any comments on this would be appreciated.
  10. Lovely bit of permission, for using the long webs. Well done Lads, looks like you enjoyed your day out.
  11. Thanks Lawrence, I suppose the problem with applying ointment to a stopper if not covered, the dog would lick it off?
  12. It has rained here for about five days, never seen fields as wet, we need some dry windy weather to dry things up. Then a cold spell.
  13. My Whippet sliced a piece of his stopper, its not too bad, had him at the vets, who pulled off the dead skin. advised being kept on a leash for a week, and to bathe the stopper three times a day with salt water, to harden stopper, I said when back to running free, if out ferreting, I would put Vetwrap on it, for a couple of weeks, but the vet was not keen on this, preferring it not to be covered. What could you use to harden stoppers, have read to use Friars Balsom, but theres as many against as for.
  14. All you lads just starting, this setup would set you up.
  15. For ferreting a marking dog is high on my list, I have worked both Beddy X greyhound, Whippet X Beddy. not saying the Beddy X Greyhound cant use his nose, they can. But I found the Whippet X Bedlington was the best marking dog.
  16. Been looking on line one company calls it co-flex which im sure is the same stuff. It comes in the foiling sizes, 5cm 7.5 2.5 10cm. any idea which would be the best size for a whippet, for the stopper.
  17. Good set up lawrence, when visited recently by Lifelong Cumbrian, he showed me his very small stainless steel basket, as light as a feather, holds two 25 yarders, ideal for a mooch, have managed to source the stainless locally. He has the plans and measurements on the longnetting forum. My mates a Blacksmith Welder, so he is going to try and make me one.
  18. I also didnt know, if you meant purse or long nets?
  19. this is what i use, had it for over 30 years, its canvas, and was made by a Seamstress, holds about 25 nets. wear it on a belt round the waist, great bit of kit. Dont know if you can buy something similar commercially. My other nets go in my old blue post office bag, which I had a seamstress add two net pockets, i also can keep a few in the pocket of my old waxproof. but as Teg has, i have sent for the dog handlers Vest, With lots of pockets which will give me more options, But now thinking I should have a pack horse, Have managed to talk the Wife into escorting me on my Ferreting trip
  20. 4z is naturally that little bit lighter, and has been said, can pick up crap easier. I used 4z for years at night, with no problem, you have to use a bit of field craft. I would usually visit the set I was going to do, during the day, and make sure, it was reasonably clean, picking up any obstacles. I would say 4z will bottle up the Rabbits better than the 6z, but years ago my netting partner had a hundred yarder 6z, and we didn't find any problem. Also if you use your 6z whilst ferreting, and a dog pushing the bolting Bunnies into the net, then Rabbits bouncing out the net should not be
  21. Yes a proper Gent, cant shout his praises enough, Perhaps Bill, or someone would know, can the white braid be dyed in bright colours?
  22. Mr Mcdonnut, That was a fair rant, glad to get it off your chest, do you feel better, have you tried anger management?
  23. Mass, When ferreting you should not be sitting down. You should be like a coiled Snake ready to strike. :D
