Whould You Advise Goin Afternoon Ferreting?
Country Joe replied to ferreter griff's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I do it often in the ferreting season, seen me picking up three or four, probably not worth it for some, but suits me fine. Just take a single Jill, and some purse nets, and one of cumbrianratchers small baskets, holds four 5 yarder stop nets, light as a feather. -
My Whippet is doing well on this feeding regime, stools solid. 1lb of raw meat, Lamb, beef or chicken, from Durham Animal Feeds or Ferreted rabbit, fed raw. A good handful of Gain 20 percent, grated carrot, and spinach. 2.5 oz Gain multivit. A blob of lard, melted in microwave, and poured over Gains. Oily fish with tomato sauce once a week.

Breeding Ferrets-Advice Needed
Country Joe replied to northwestferreting's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Ha, you appear to be desperate to breed. Its just a matter of preference, but I like to work Two Jills but i had my hob vasectomised, This brings them out of Season, and they don't have young. you can just leave them when in Season, but there's always the chance of infection so you are better bringing them out. You can take them to a Vet and get the Jill jab, but its quite expensive, and they could come back in. and you are also putting chemicals into them. my advice would be to pick up a hob, and get him vasectomised, have a look on here later and pick up a kit Jill from a long li -
Had a Whippet x Bedlington always ran silent day or night, apart from running a Rabbit in a wood where she always gave a few yips, but not singing. then right after she could run a rabbit, not in a wood and be completely silent. she did this all her working life.

You still have not answered the question, if she has a large litter, could be 10. how are you going to get rid? -
Breeding Ferrets-Advice Needed
Country Joe replied to northwestferreting's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
you will probably soon see kits on here, bred from good working strains, going way back, so anyone looking for kits, would go for them. Also you must try and breed with a small working Hob, if you can find a good one. Not that it will produce smaller kits, but it helps if your ferts are not of the large type. As you have just started out, and good luck to you, you will enjoy years of sport. I would just concentrate on field craft, lot of wee tips,on here, that will help put more rabbits in your bag. then when you have a four year old Jill, that has worked really well, you can think -
A couple of Months ago I was returning home after being out a walk with a Whippet when a white van pulled up, and the driver asked if it could catch a rabbit, i told them no, it was a family pet, he had an Irish accent. when i got to my house the van was just behind me, but i just kept on walking. till it was out of sight.

I have now settled to this feeding regime, 1lb raw Beef or Lamb or chicken or ferreted rabbit, Raw meat is delivered to door Durham Animal feeds, a good handful of Gain 20 Percent. A cube of Grated Carrot and Spinach, made up in a ice cube tray, found that tip on here, one cube daily. 2.5 oz of gain Garmivit supplement. a knob of lard daily. once a week, tin of sardines or any oily fish. I know dogs love tripe, but i don't feed it, as its low on protein.

What make of mincer do you have? have you tried it, ive heard they have to be really powerful to mince rabbit on the bone, and are expensive. a good tip, a Butcher told me freeze the rabbit, and when defrosting, when its just partly defrosted then put it through the mincer, makes it easier for the machine to chop.

Ive said this a few times, with the big money that Mark1s still make on Ebay, you would think Deben would have noticed, and bring out a updated mark1 with all new parts and bright new colour. and i think they would be able to make the collars smaller. with the big demand for mark1s, you would think someone could bring out something similar.

I also have a small car, with ferreting gear in the boot, no room for dog, just get a backseat waterproof cover, you can wipe it down.

I now skin and gut them, I cut the meat of the rabbit, bag it and freeze for a fortnight. whats left gets bagged and freezed for the ferrets

Very tidy, a nice type.

Great bushing dog, best run on the Fens, 4 mice out of 4.

the DH X GH used to be the most commonly used Hare dog in my youth Same in my part of the Country, most Lurchers had a bit of Deerhound in them, and a few ran 3/4 Collie greyhound. The collies used were all border, never seen any then with Beardie, A lot of the breeding was Lurcher to Lurcher, although some claimed to have a bit of Bedlington, but I had never seen one. Saluki crosses were rare. the Exchange and Mart back then was full of supposedly deerhound X Greyhound.

Above post says it all, and by the way , yourself is spelt like this. I wont get into this line of argument, as its very childless. So if a Bedlington is now usless in your eyes, what do you recommend as a rabbiting lurcher? no abusive comments please.

I see you have another post on here, stating that Bedlingtons are no good, as you knew them as fighting dogs, I reckon you are just a wind up merchant. I had a lengthy conservation with Bill Brightmore who Plummer came to interview for his book The Fell Terrier, Bill told him where to get off, and never ended up in his book. Which was a travisty as most terrier men with black dogs in Scotland had Brightmore breeding in them.

Just another stupid post, from a man who said i hunted with B. Plummer, why don't you just disappear no one is interested that you hunted with plummer, and you know nothing a bout Bedlingtons. I ve worked Lurchers for more than 45 years, and ive never met Plummer, So why don't you go back to where you come from, regarding Plummer he never seen a decent bedlington. I remember talking to Bill Brightmore who told Plummer where to get off. Bill had him sized up.

Rubbish, years ago i had a whippet X Bedlington, great little bitch game as they come, and the Bedlington she was bred off was a rabbiting dog. there are good working bedlingtons on TWBF dogs that work below as well as on top, A friend of mine has a bedlington X Whippet bred out of a Granitor strain of Bedlington, another top class rabbiting dog.now just had pups to a very good working Whippet. when I knew this Bitch was being bred I jumped at the chance.

, if I was to use pet quality products I would cook before giving it to a dog that I expected to work. Being pre cooked is the one real plus point of completes the cooking has already been done. It avoids the low level bacterial infections that pet minces inevitably bring to some degree. Sandy i use DAF raw Beef and Chicken, after thinking raw was best, now it appears to cook?

Thats really bad Moxy, hope your back making soon. On the subject of custom boxes, i cant figure out why your nets would be in a box. I have an old barbour jacket, when out for a mooch, i can get enough nets in both pockets, plus ferret finder and collars. which leaves me with a lightweight single box, that i can get 2 jills if needed, but for a mooch, the one fert is enough.

I would say the majority on here hunt, and to tell you the truth, i couldn't care less, if you hunted, or shared cups of tea with Plummer, i have read his books and found them entertaining, I actually prefer Phil Lloyds looks to me your post is just a bit of name dropping. take the top line, I HUNTED WITH MR PLUMMER, so what?
