I'm off the 1st week in August so with any luck it's the roe rut and a possible fallow buck would be good ?
-
Brilliant mate , hope theres a few knocking about. August not far away now ?
-
Tell me about it I'm stiff as a board today. 12 hours kneeling behind a net in blistering heat with flies and midges .......great fun ?
-
?????? what will I spend it on ?

I was set up at 4.30 am yesterday morning on a smallish patch of laid barley. First few hours a bit slow with mainly jackdaws in the bag , plenty of woodies but nothing would decoy they were just flying about all over. Once I had a few birds I replaced all the decoys with these and the woodies started decoying better but loads still ignoring them. After a 12 hour shift I packed up absolutely knackered. Bag was 174 birds ......88 woodies 86 corvids. Couldnt pick them all Dave as loads dropped in the barley ? Anyway a great day and still loads of pigeons about.

Anyone going to the game fair ?

I'm still ok with lamp , not many foxes on my grounds. I wrestled with my conscience for years about nv and came to the conclusion that for the few extra foxes I would get it's not economic. Anyway my passion is calling them in and seeing the ruby eyes , that's what I love so suits me? Dont get me wrong horses for courses , like keepers who have a job to do but my foxing is recreational. -

I think those Iray are the best thermal scopes out there at present...even better than Thermion 2 I have researched but at 4.5k you can keep it. -
Lots of birds just depends on if they decoy as dropping in all over the field. Fingers crossed.....hope you have a good day ?
-
Sorry for crows in your shopping but impossible to pick them all , I will pick what I can but from experience it's not easy. I have told the farmer and happy about it as just wants them shot.

I'm out tomorrow on a barley field that has hindreds of pigeons and corvids hitting it. Only problem is not many flat patches and they are dropping in all over the field but will give it a go ?

Cant think of nothing worse ...thousands of people in one place parading around in their camo gear feeling important ?? -
Get yourself on the crows or pigeons , cant be fed up of them. Not a good forecast anyway hope it changes.

Yep spoke to a farmer today and the barley is ready to cut but busy with cutting grass still . Next weekend is forecast rain and thunderstorms so see what happens. Roe rut will be kicking off now so must try for a buck or two then I must make a start on the bunnies ??

Christ I wouldnt move from Scotland to Hartlepool.....especially if I was a monkey. ?
-
I love Scotland, it's my favourite place .Wish I could move up there but only if I had all the shooting on my doorstep ?

Up in the Borders yesterday , red hot but thankfully a 16 mph wind which meant no midges ? Spotted a group of 5 sika around 800 yds away but unable to sex them so I stalked into them but they vanished into the tall bracken. I waited around 200 yards away on my sticks for about an hour when they eventually reappeared but sadly all Hinds ? Watched the other side of the hill til dark but once again only the girls appeared, never mind I will be back in the rut.
-
In this heat it will be honking , hopefully he will oblige ?I'm off to Scotland tomorrow, just hope the midges behave.
-
Looks beautiful, glad you had a quiet night hopefully be the same tonight.

Nice one Ben , I also had a look out not expecting anything as nothing about on this farm but wanted some exercise. 1st call produced nothing , but 2nd call using cub call had this vixen coming in nice.?

Well done SL ...as said scopes can take a hell of a knock that is why I always laugh to myself when a shot is missed and the guy blames the scope must have been bumped ????? In my experience it tends to be human error . I remember one night I was climbing over a gate and when I was at the top my sling snapped and the rifle bounced off the ground on to some rocks , like you I thought scope would be out but quick check and it was Ok.

Everyone will have their opinion but I would say : Rats ......air rifle Rabbits and hares .....22lr Foxes ......any .22 centrefire or .243 Deer ......6.5 or .308 12g shotgun for wing shooting
-
Hope you nail the other one tonight ?

Yes

Well I was up at 3.30am and set up on the ground for just after 4. Misty grey morning and birds still in bed. It's not ideal where I was shooting as the birds were coming from behind me and spotting me in the hide. I had to take kneeling shots but still shot well. No birds decoyed at all I had to rely on my trusty jackdaw caller and call them in. Great few hours shooting and packed up once the public started appearing. Bag of 45 .....42 corvids , 1 magpie, 2 woodies. Couldnt pick many as dropped into cover behind me or in the barley.
