Guns Choice not placed in Field Trial
welshboy454 replied to welshboy454's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
So what you are saying is that the guns choice "a shooters point of view" in the dogs performance is totally irrelevant and what matters is the judge(s) on the day opinion of some subtle difference in performance to make a FT award. For me the opinion of the guns should carry some weight. After all what are we trying to prove -that the best dog for shooting over has some mystical quality that the guns cannot see ? I think that is taking the P**S -
If you read the following link the guns choice of thr best dog was not placed in the field trial. Is this normal or can anyone explain it ? You would expect the guns choice to be their favorite dog to shoot with which is how most of us think. http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...sa%3DG%26um%3D1

I think the idea is you are asked to fetch the dummies in a particular order. The dog obeys and does not choose.

Absolutely sound advice 100% spot on

Unlikely to be deerhound in her at that size probably bedlington x(whippet Xgreyhound) is my guess. I had a greyhound X beddy 22 inches looked like that - good for everything !

Nice looking. How high at the shoulder - that should sort out if deerhound x or a bedlington x

In common with a few others it seems one day something which looked about the size of a labrador - I am convinced it was a black cat of some kind ran across a lane in front of me. Knowing the sceptics I said nothing except tell a friend who lived 200 yds away from there in case his grandchildren got hurt - even he took the piss. Anyway take a look at this image- Goodness knows what is out there [view: http://halbot.haluze.sk/images/2009-03/4843_Picture42.jpg 650x499, 64665 B]

Not in any of this category but probably the biggest consecutive flukes ever. As a kid with a 177 air rifle I shot at a crow about 50 yards away guessing how high above to shoot. Puck I heard it hit and it flew up the field to about 120 yards. Being a kid another go guessing the trajectory it was way way above the crow - result stone dead - I could not believe it but its true.

Yes but I thought it was such a great photo it was worth sharing- but are greyhounds running dogs ?

whats the best feed to get duck on the pools
welshboy454 replied to terrierman 1's topic in Wildfowling
Not an ideal arrangement- The food should be distributed about half a hour before dark. The reason is that if for example you put it down in the morning then seagulls( I am not joking) will eat it all before flight time. Even if they did not eat it then the ducks would be encouraged to stay all day. What you want is a good evening flight of visiting ducks. You can buy an automatic feeder which you attach to a barrel of feed on stilts and set it to come on at a certain time. They do work but you need to riddle the barley as the hole can get blocked defeating the object as I found out to my dis -

Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??
welshboy454 replied to rickyspringer's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Nobody would object to that statement as you say"fair play to him" . However we all have a duty to the health of future working stock. Such a dog should never be bred from. I wonder how many FTCH owners would have the integrity to do that for the sake of the future at the expense of the opportunity to make some money ? Quite a moral dilemna -
getting dogs used to shooting
welshboy454 replied to ellir0305's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
I agree. Many years ago I was given a gunshy lurcher. I took him lamping and shot a rabbit when he was locked on . He was cured immediately and loved the gun in the daytime afterwards. -
Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??

The following is an extract I found on the web confirming Hypoglycemia as being a problem encountered in Field Trials. What happens to the working stock if a dog with hereditary hypoglycemia wins trials and is used extensively at stud to unwitting breeders? " ( published in Spaniels In The Field - winter 2003 ) With the trial season fast approaching, I suggest that you all take time to consider your degree of preparedness. Should one of your dogs suffer a misadventure in transit or at the event, would you be equipped to deal with first aid? Certainly none of the truly devoted tr -
Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??
welshboy454 replied to rickyspringer's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
In general I agree but occasionally hereditary hypoglycemia can occur causing a lack of stamina for a full days hunting but enough to get through a short trial run. The dog I saw being carried home after 2.5 hours is an example- he was placed in some working tests but I would never buy from his strain. Proven hereditary stamina is more likely to exist in strains that have been observed over long days and lifetimes. -
Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??

I never said they were not good workers. Ask yourself this how long is a run in a trial ? - do you measure it in minutes or hours ? Is it a short artificial but useful test of a dogs ability? Some dogs are conditioned just for the trial whilst others have a greater depth of stamina is all I am saying. My own dog is heavily from ft lines but has stamina and one strain is distinctly absent whilst Badgercourt is dominant throughout. -
Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??
welshboy454 replied to rickyspringer's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Not all trials bred strains can handle a full days work or pace themselves accordingly. I have seen one well bred brilliant worker (for an hour) being carried back across fields and up hills after 2 and a half hours work. I would not give it house room. On the other hand I have seen keepers dogs working all day on a shooting day after dogging in in the early morning. I am not saying that all trials dogs are rubbish just that some strains are better than others for a long days shooting work. There has been some discussion in another topic on this. Keepers are in a good position to judge ot -
Hmmm 5's for ducks !!!!!!!!!!!! lead no can't be - must be bismuth or steel. Steel go down 2 sizes is the guidance - bismuth can't afford them !

Agree all the suggestions but strangely enough the mallard seem to go mad for spud peelings. Do chip shops still peel spuds ? -
One of the best natural ponds I have access to has some deep water(safety) but progressively getting shallower with the slope tapering. The result is a pond which has a lot of grass growing in the summertime around the edges and in the winter this grass is covered (depth from 3or 4inchesat the margins rising to the tops of wellingtons over about 20/25ft) . Mallard and teal use this one without barley feeding . Whatever you do don't dig a deep hole as an old quarry with 20 ft depth of water within 800 yards of the shallow pond is useless by comparison.

I have thought about making a light weather proof box to strap in my trailer- best compromise to keep the car clean. Storage for kit/food

I can relate with a smile to both the above comments - the woodcock flying on after a cloud of feathers reminds me of one I shot but never got. Hit with the first shot I thought I would make sure and gave it the second choke barrel - a cloud of feathers and carried on flying into a big wood 300 yards away. Another retrieve- my dog is ESS On a shoot where I do some beating no picking up is allowed on the top of a valley after a drive as that part of the valley is the next drive and all the beaters enjoy some picking up after this drive as they are now in position. One day at the end of th
