On our small shoot the farmer has been cutting hedges and has come across the feathers of a number of pheasants obviously killed- a far greater number than other years. It is a large pile of feathers sometimes in the middle of a field and at least one site where a cock and hen were almost side by side. No bodies found or bones. Any ideas what is happening ?

Our shoot syndicate has the pens on farmer A's property although most of the shooting is done on adjoining land. Last season one wood shot badly- the reason was that Farmer A's dogs - 3 of them hunt the wood themselves scattering the birds virtually every day. This year they have started in a second wood and I picked them up and dropped them off home and told Farmer A . The problem is that they are not kenneled and soon as his back is turned off they will be again hunting. A real catch 22 situation - how do you deal with it ?

Many years ago the places I used to go rough shooting only held rabbits foxes and woodcock in the winter. I used to have 2 jack russels a springer and a lurcher. The terriers would make music on scent which eventually made the springer yip as well. A good pack and great fun at the time but no use for my current shooting in a syndicate.

The first springer spaniel I had came with me when I walked up a pond - I shot a teal and she retrieved it aged 4.5 months - she had had no training at all other than sit heel stuff. My current springer 3.5 years old for his first shooting outing - he had been a pet with his former owner living in a terraced house in a town. So a big difference in ages. I think 9 to 12 months is ok to introduce but not on a regular basis- better when a bit more mature.

As a kid my father came home one day with a jack russel bitch pup which we called jack.He had been conned -it was a collie x springer which became brilliant at hunting. I was gutted to find one day that he had given it to my uncle who went shooting(my father did not shoot). The up side was that my uncle used to take me out as I had bonded with Jack. Control was a problem and he used to drop her out of the van 3 miles from our shooting and she would run behind the van with me calling from the open back doors. This was to tire her before a days hunting ! My uncle kept her for life as she was so

How do you prove it is the same dog even if it has paperwork- there are no photos !

I think that is an excellent idea.

Rough shooting is a wide spectrum. Can you describe what you want your dog to do -mostly eg hunting up game/fur/vermin for you or retrieving or both. Also the type of ground you will be shooting on - eg thick heavy cover, hedgerows upland moors as this will influence the best type of dog . i want the dog for flushing out game.and the terrane is heges manly Springer or Cocker but having said that I used to have a lot of fun with a Jack Russel.

I had one - it was useless. A friend has two one useless one brilliant.

reducing fixed choke 3/4 to 1/2 cost ?
welshboy454 replied to welshboy454's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
In his 2nd post, welshboy says he want's to shoot steel. I think he is doing the right thing to get the choke eased a bit. Pretty sure 1/2 choke max is recommended by most cartridge makers for steel. This is due to no deformation of the pellets, on the outside of the shot column as it passes through the restriction. So it should not be "squeezed" too much. Yes Spot on. -
i seen the vidio very good but what i cant under stand is why the dog is working cover with nothing in it i no its part of the training but i got 2 cockers and the 4 year old will go in and come out if there is nothing there if there is some thing he wil not come out till it does weatheres its a dead bird or alive. what im saying is she is telling the dog to work bushes when he and she no there is nothing in there I was a bit puzzled which is why I put it up. As I said my dog hunts/quarters well but tends to air scent for the game scent cone and then homes in- then barbed wire would not

The link below is a member of this forums dog hunting - As I am unconnected in any way it is not spam but if mods want to they can take it down. It is good to watch and the dog really gets his nose down and uplifts the bracken with some style. My dog tends to air scent more when hunting normally but if I give him the fetch command and he has been unsighted he goes into that mode of hunting looking in every possible bit of cover- to me it reminds me of a pig rooting ! great to watch.

Hily you are trying to be mischievious ! My experience is not based on just our shoot - I go beating in a few shoots and talking to other beaters it does seem to be an increasing trend that the kc reg papers are not valued as highly as you would think. For some reason people are voting on this issue by their actions ie relying more on their knowledge of the parents having seen them work. The first couple of posters agree so it is not an isolated matter limited to West Wales. I have not said that all Ftch get their status on soft ground but some do by their handlers choice(why ?) not because

I started this topic because of a trend I had noticed locally . 6 out of 8 dogs on our shoot are not KC reg- Used to be 8out of 8 kc reg springers. It would have been 7 out of 8 if my offer to buy a dog I had seen working was accepted-(a 4 figure offer). As far as working cover is concerned I asked this question of a KC Field Trial Judge- Can a dog be made up to field trial champion but only ever won on soft ground and never faced heavy cover (brambles furze blackthorn )? Answer "Yep and quite a few do - if you follow the circuit you will soon get a feel for which of the handlers pre

Anybody know how much it costs to reduce a fixed choke barrel from 3/4 to 1/2 choke ? Cheers

In fairness Sporting Shooter has covered it " The foreshore is anywhere below the mean high water mark of ordinary spring tides." This may be a bit of a mystery if you don't understand how the tides work as the moon and the sun have an influence. On a full moon and at no moon the tides are at their highest range ie they are high on the shore and recede further out. Not sure about Scotland but where I live the difference in the high tides at full/no moon to a week later can be 2 metres- enough to drown you if you picked a spot on the previous week and returned there. The next thin

Yep depends which County you live in, bloody stupid but there we go Bell Yes a very strange one. With local Governemt reorganisation a few years ago some Counties did not renew the ban by accident so it is worth checking the actual byelaw.

Went pigeon shooting yesterday. I was on a flightline and the birds were falling into a wood behind and below me so my dog had plenty of retrieving 26 intotal. One thing I noticed was he was definitely trying to pick them up more carefully as things progressed to avoid being left with a mouthful of feathers and liked it when I removed the feathers from his mouth after each retrieve. Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this.
