Well that was it- extremely disappointing for mallard and teal. Been on the marsh again this morning -only saw one mallard. Geese were calling in the distance but that was it. 3 years ago the first shot would put off 200 mallard so something is different this year. How are others doing ?

All may not be lost ! If anybody wants to research a line in their springer pedigree go to http://www.esspedigrees.co.uk/ then click on database there are 85000 springers on there. In the white search box type the full name or part of the name and tick the slow search box and click search now. If the dog is there click on the blue "pedigree w/links" gives you the 5 generation of that dog You can get lost in there for an hour ! Apologies to those who know how to use the database

In a driven pheasant shoot the emphasis is on good close control with beaters and dogs working a straight line towards a flushing point for the guns. On the driven pheasant shoots I have been to the dogs are mainly springers- some cockers and occasionally a lab in the beating line but for picking up mainly labs with a few springers. I cannot recall seeing any of the HPR breeds on a driven pheasant shoot but that is only what I have seen -maybe there are some.

Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??
welshboy454 replied to rickyspringer's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
This is a link to another forum topic where these ideas are being discussed and is worth a read. http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/foru...5642c3529adea3a This is a quote from somebody which if true makes you wonder what is happening. "My [bANNED TEXT] went out with a field trial champ with his gos once and after 20 minuets of explosive working by this spaniel it was smashed to bits and knackered. and was returned to the truck and another dog was used. " At least the dog I regularly saw being carried home worked a bit longer than that but still unacceptable. -
Gamekeeper bred or Trialler Bred??

I agree with the sentiments but I would go further for the following reasons. Openshaw has dominated the trials as a trainer/handler and his dogs are as a result dominating the gene pool for the future. FTCH Clarburgh Art has 150 matings. In statistical terms the likelihood of Openshaw just happening to have the best dogs out of the whole population of springers is extremely remote but having said that he is unquestionably the best trainer by a long way. In humans we can measure IQ and the statistical proportion of the population above say 130 is 2% but above an Iq of 180 might be 1 in 2 -

Apparently he was a little unsteady but in every other way brilliant with lots of drive. I don't think there are many springers without him in the pedigree somewhere if you go back far enough. This is a video of a Field Spaniel training to quarter - the dog starts off quite well but loses his pattern. This is a video of the dog working in a test Hope this helps

Keith Erlandsons era went back to the late 1950's when rabbits were nearly extinct. He was a man who experienced the change in trialling over his lifetime and commented accordingly. He warned in 1995 about the system of trials using bunnies on soft ground leading to undesirable outcomes. Nobody really listened but the ability of the internet to stimulate debate was not available to him - now guys what have you got to say. This is your chance your dogs your future sport.

Thank you Swamp rat. It does need to be discussed as the gene pool could become polluted and take years to overcome.. Jessdale - Who knows ? but think -why is there such an increase in the number of springers without papers- it is common down here and it seems from the topic answers growing elsewhere as well. The underlying opinion (rightly or wrongly) is that " field trials don't mean anything"(not an opinion I share I should add) - "they don't test stamina and a lot are held on 'soft ground'. I have personally seen a dog regularly carried back after an hour /hour and a half. That

I had my first spaniel at 14 years old - I have had 4 altogether and the current one is the best- the dog of my lifetime certainly. All had ft lines but his is exceptional. My shooting involves wildfowling on the marsh, a pheasant syndicate and loads of rough shooting -pigeon woodcock rabbit. So does this mean you are not happy with any dog that gets its ft tickets in england /scotland but you are happy with a winner from wales what im saying is the gene pool aint that big so any winner you come accross will have a ftch in its ped from all over the country . and if you have a dog that doe

It was already on the world wide web and therefore publicly advertised. Contact http://workinggundogs.co.uk/Documents/NWC%...ents%202009.pdf They put it up so if you wish you could direct your comments to them.

I will quote Keith Erlandson from his book "The Working Springer Spaniel" On page 18 towards the bottom " Rabbits have returned to northern areas as never before, but the terrain tends to be 'soft' heather, rushes white grass and short green bracken. many field trials are won under such conditions, which can scarcely be claimed as a test of courage. This means that at the moment we have field trial champions which will not go near a bramble" He continues on page 19 " Something has to be amiss somewhere when a Welsh rabbit trial is arranged on what is normally bracken and a bit of gorse,t

The trial will be run on rabbits, therefore the grassy slope, rushes and moorland will be able to provide game for such a trial.A rabbit trial run on ground covered in brambles/furze/blackthorn would not,i suspect, provide the shooting opportunities,at the bolting rabbits, that a trial would require.I am sure once the shooting season is under way there will be trials run in cover that is "thick". The following is how a FTCh is awarded according to : http://www.gundog-magazine.com/brtrials.htm Springer Spaniel Trials Opens are only run over one day with the Championship being over two.

At a spaniel trial, all dog's are expected to face any cover. Including bramble's and blackthron. Glad to hear that confirmation- its just that the description below does not say that. There is a field trial being held on the 28th/29th August 2009 at Gunnerside Estate North Yorkshire. The ground is described as steep grassy slopes, rushes and moorland. I see no mention of brambles/furze/blackthorn ! If anyone attends could they please give some feedback to those of us unable to go as to the suitability of the test of cover ( If any) these dogs are asked to face and whether it is typical spaniel country or more suited to the HPR breeds

Now this touches on a thorny issue- only this week I was told by a guy that he had been asked for the papers of his dog by somebody(A) who wished to claim it as the father of pups he (A)was trying to sell- the bitch had stole the dog from her litter brother.

It seems to me that there is an increase in the number of dogs with no papers. I see this in our own shoot where this year other than my own dog only 1 out of seven spaniels will be kc registered. It used to be all kc reg.In fact a few years ago I tried buying a litter brother of a dog in our shoot - I had seen him working while beating he had plenty of drive style and control which made me offer silly money which was refused. I see quite a few used for beating without papers. Again we hear a lot about sprockers. The common thread seems to be that all these dogs owners are only interested

Guns Choice not placed in Field Trial
welshboy454 replied to welshboy454's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
So what you are saying is that the guns choice "a shooters point of view" in the dogs performance is totally irrelevant and what matters is the judge(s) on the day opinion of some subtle difference in performance to make a FT award. For me the opinion of the guns should carry some weight. After all what are we trying to prove -that the best dog for shooting over has some mystical quality that the guns cannot see ? I think that is taking the P**S The only opinion that matters is the one given by the judge/judges.Thats what they are there for. The judges have the power to make award -
Try getting the dog to carry a meaty bone when on a lead- periodically stop- get it to give you the bone and give it a titbit in return every time. Progress to throwing the bone in an enclosed space and get it to give it to you -again reward it. Just build from there.
