Not from experience only what I have read One trick is to pretend to eat from his bowl and then when he thinks you have finished you give the food to him. It seems to be a way of showing dominance as it seems your dog is food possessive /dominant.

Out of curiosity I looked up the Basc guidance which suggests 700 birds per hectare ( about 14/15 sq metres per bird)for a release pen. Release pens operate for a short timespan say 2 months maximum 3 months during the growing season. The EU allow 4 sq metres per bird for free range hens 12 months of the year including the non growing season ! An interesting comparison Is it just me thinking that something does not stack up here ? or is the conservation tail now wagging the shooting dog ! The European Union regulates marketing standards for egg farming which specifies the foll

I think there are guidelines something along the lines of 1 yard perimeter fence per bird which suggest a number under 50 for the size pen you are thinking about. If my memory is correct the perimeter guidance can be overtaken by an allowance in sq ft per bird in large pens as the total area increases at a faster rate than the perimeter as pens get larger.

Michigan Bluebacks

A shooting syndicate nearby put 500 down(their total) and shot 61. They insisted the following year that they would have none at any price. They said they flew well straight out of the shoot never to return ! -

pheasants laying
welshboy454 replied to salukiboy's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
They'll start laying mid to late march and will still be laying early june all depends on how many and how they are penned and if on fresh ground does contributes to how many they will lay,You should be getting around 40 eggs per bird I second the above- layers pellets helps and they need access to a plentiful supply of clean water to keep them laying. -
On getting him at 3yrs old I started retrieving training -I play a game with him which involves some control and hide and seek and he loves it. I make him sit and tell him to stay- this took a while in the beginning but he got it in the end. Then I go and hide his dummy somewhere out of sight of him . Then return to him and tell him go fetch- he hunts relentlessly-sometimes going in the wrong direction but he quickly cottoned on to me whistling and pointing where he should be hunting. In fact he will now look for a signal naturally if a blind retrieve. The dividend for this game playing came

Has anyone any experience of a Britanny Spaniel. As I am getting older following my springer working close by is not so appealing as the thought of letting a dog range as the video below shows and then ambushing the game when the dog finds it.

I use a thin whippy willow and flick it back and forth in front of the dog- because of the speed it is invisible and if he goes forward it touches his nose and irritates him. They quickly learn to stay at heel until you give the release command. The advice about walking along a fence is sound.

I used to borrow my brothers ESS bitch but she became uncontrollable. At the end of the season I was looking for a dog for the next season and bring a pup on as otherwise I would lose my place in our syndicate shoot.I saw a Ess dog 3years old for sale and bought him- he had been a pet in a terraced house in the welsh valleys. My syndicate colleagues tut tutted he was too old . My intention was to keep him only until the pup I was going to buy was ready to work . When I got him home I looked at his pedigree to realise he had been line bred to FTCH Badgercourt Druid to the extent he was 34% Drui

From the experience of our shoot we get our poults around the end of the first week of August. Whilst recognising the point about maturity we find that releasing early well matured birds leads to a lower percentage return overall as they wander more . On that size shoot you will need to regularly dog in the boundary area to try to keep them home. A net over the pen reduces the predator loss from hawks etc

Wild ducks and spring/summer feeding
welshboy454 replied to bmetson's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
We tend to feed until 31 march or so (depends on how much food is left) - the benefit is that mammy duck nests somewhere nearby and in the autumn brings babies along - a brilliant return on investment -
It seems it is not a requirement of the Crown estate to be under the Basc umbrella so my question is are there any wildfowling clubs with a foreshore lease not affiliated to BASC ? If so are there any problems with renewals ?

What are the options for getting shotgun insurance - I am with Basc, A friend is with Cpsa- any others ?

It was not my intention to ruffle feathers on this topic. The default quote when replying has contributed to this. My replies were directed to the original poster who asked : "i use 1/4 and 1/2 mainly , but somtimes 1/4 and 1/4 and wondered if anyone had any preference or suggestions. thanks in advance sean " Suggestions implies wanting to learn/improve . Sporting Clay layouts do differ considerably. I have seen local league layouts where skeet is all that is needed. County qualifier layouts are more difficult and a greater proportion of targets are at a longer range requi

The majority of trap shooters DTL use 3/4 first barrel full second - that discipline requires a kill on the first shot 99 out of 100 to be in the running. The Target is edge on going away so a concentrated pattern is required. I do not know of any consistent competition winners using skeet and skeet or light chokes. Some sporting targets are at greater distances than DTL so why not learn from the experts who have from experience found the right chokes to use.
-
Depends on a combination of 3 things. 1 distance, 2 going away or incoming, 3 edge on or face. Other things being equal for going away and rising slightly I choke up a bit as the clay is more difficult to break. Close in Skeet or cylinder further out choke. My guideline is up to 30yds skeet,35yds 1/4,40yds 1/2,45yds 3/4 over 45m full. I use 7.5 size shot over 40 yds and 8s under. 9s if under 30 yds.

advice on ducks
welshboy454 replied to shitzu's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Try feeding the ponds. A little barley in the shallows and check for feathers and signs of them around the margins. If they are visiting increase the feed - not too much just enough to keep them interested you don't want them to stay all day just to flight in. As a guideline a bucket of barley will keep up to 100 ducks visiting at flight time. On a 40 yards by 30 yards pond we feed regularly from 1 August to March 31 I counted 125 mallard and a friend gave up on the teal on an evening flight. -
Shrimping with a push net is a bit like a sweeping brush- a handle is used to push the net along the sandy bottom. Pendine in west wales is excellent as the sandy bottom does not snag the net. Best time for me is the summer- water is not so cold
