What is your dog's most memorable retrieve for you ? I will start with mine - The dog was a rescue 3 years old never been hunting until I had him. Only been out a few times shooting and one day after woodcock a friend (no 8's in) shot a surprise pheasant hit hard twice but was able to continue flying poorly. The bird was losing height but as we were on a hill the bird was going downhill with the terrain - I had shouted fetch and he was off. The bird kept going and the dog running it finally crossed the river about 150/200 yards away into some cover that side. We waited while the dog h

I read somewhere years ago a theory that some strains of ess had been crossed with sheepdogs. There would be some sense in that as the collie is recognised as the most intelligent breed. If you read the books about training a dog to quarter when the wind is blowing from behind the collie style of running out in a circle first fits with this idea and then working back. Another clue may be in the size of the ears- in many working lines the ears are not as long as in old pictures. As Keith Erlandson wrote " it is a wise dog that knows its genes ! "

why can,t I hit a barn door with a frying pan?
welshboy454 replied to nimrod49's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I second this analysis. You have hit some high fast birds on instinct swinging fast and firing in the swing .You are probably leading enough on slower targets then thinking fire but stopping the gun swinging. The time delay between thinking fire and actually firing is say quarter of a second. A 40mph target will have traveled 12ft or so in that time. It is easy to miss behind then. -
Just a question really - Are you 100% sure she is not prey possessive- If she is you could try turning your back on her when she is coming in with the dummy and start walking away and try to bring her to heel so you have her under control and then build from there. It has worked with my dog.

This does not answer directly your question but it is worth reading this link http://www.dobbsdogs.com/library/retrievers/rj21.html -
A distant in law relative is a dog handler with the police. From what I understand he spends a fair bit of his duty time feeding cleaning and training his dog and an easy workload, well paid and with a fat pension after 30 years service. Not exactly what you asked about but something to think about thanks for repling... did he just do his traning through the police? Yes -In the police service there is a rank structure and he would have been trained by his supervisors and fellow dog handlers as to the different dog skills and handling skills required. Some are public order control

Just an update I have got to the stage where he is happy to retrieve (in the middle of a field ) right in to me and to allow me to put his lead on while he holds the dummy. He then gives it to me after I have walked him for a few yards but for the moment I give it back to him to carry home as he seems to enjoy it so much. Please tell me if you think I am building up problems for myself. Tiny 7 How are you getting on ?

what a night

Unless they are kept in an enclosed space until the need for heat has gone it will be difficult. Pheasant chicks wander( try to commit suicide !) while squabs sit tight. -
Below is some inf trawled from the net. We don't start feeding until after the moult say first week August in Wales. "After the breeding season Mallards moult, or shed old feathers, into what is known as an eclipse plumage. The males are the first to undergo this moult. The males remain on their territories for about the first 10 days of incubation. After that, they desert their mates. They move to larger marshes, where they lose their brilliant breeding plumage and become more similar to the hen, or female. All their flight feathers are shed at once, and for about a month the birds a

Hi I have sent you a private message with my thoughts but as I have been asking for help myself and feeling my way in the dark on this I am not confident enough to post it on the forum. But if it works you can ! ATB

Thank you for your comments and suggestions- gratefully received. You are right about the treats problem of dropping the dummy in anticipation of the reward. He does react like that if he knows treats are available- somehow he must smell them I think. I cannot use the sit command as immediately he drops the dummy and sits. What I do now is to allow him to bring it to me fairly close then turn away and start walking and give the heel command to get him under control and then stop and get him to deliver to hand. I hope to progressively shorten this control period. As background I got him a

A bit of a breakthrough -not with the dog but with me understanding what has been going on ! he sees me as competition. What I have been now doing is getting him to do a retrieve and deliver it to me in the glasshouse where I have a chair(don't ask but it is lazy days stuff) and then spend some quality time with him beside me and I scratch/smooth his head. He loves it. So I hold the dummy right next to his mouth and as soon as he grabs it I stop smoothing/scratching-he will give it back straight away to get the reward of the scratch/smooth. This seems to be working but it is more a case of m

Now that is a difficult question as I have had 3 spaniels 4 terriers and two lurchers. Currently I have a ESS dog which suits my purpose now but I think the first lurcher was the best all round dog. An airdale Xgreyhound father with a whippetX labrador mother. Only 22inches he would trash like a spaniel and raise all game birds, retrieve ,lamp rabbits/foxes and mark holes. I was gutted when he was run over in his prime.

Hi - my dog is 6 years old and I have been giving him a refresher course in retrieving as he stopped delivering to hand. I went back to the enclosed passage training then moving on to throwing the dummy in the field but standing in the gateway to intercept him and it has been going fine. The problem I have identified with him is I think called prey possessive. He wants to retain the dummy. I have got him to the stage where he trusts me to give it to me in my hand as long as I give it back to him to carry. I need to wean him off this somehow - any ideas/advice gratefully received. To

not asked yet but will do got the chance of a very cheap silver pigeon 3 fixed choke the guy wants to get rid of asap in nead of cash what it choke out to now, no need to get it it bore out for choke, if you get used to it you still have to be on the target to hit it , and you could allways just use lighter shells ??? or heavier ones cheers sounder yeah its possible enquired with local gunsmith over a similar situation got offered a cheap fixed choke miroku, he quoted £45 to bore out the barrels to the required choke or he could have teague chokes fitted to the barrels for about

My favourite all round cartridge was 6.5 30g clear pigeon - not sure who made them as I have not seen any lately. Out one day and a high pigeon came over - chose left barrel 3/4 choke 34g 5s + missed so I tried (in desperation) right barrel 1/4 choke 6.5 30g - result stone dead ! that was the day I found my favourite all round cartridge ! plenty of pellets for a full pattern. a more probable explination on the situation you discribed, its very common this happens, and it aint to do with size of shot etc... imo you / they , didnt / dont , swing enough on the first shot and missed b

I don't think I would call that dog body language as in natural canine communication, i would call that knowing what the human is likely to do and pre-empting it or encouraging it The licking the lips will be a reaction to salivating knowing there is potentially more food, the car door and dummy are reactions to a known action, he knows you open the door or throw the dummy and is waiting for you to do the expected action. Natural canine body language is facinating and can be so subtle that us humans usually miss it completely, a quick flash of the ears, tail held a certain way group yaw

I thought I would ask if anyone has some good body language tips. I have noticed 3 with my dog there must be many more and I am just not tuned in so if you can help/advise please do. 1 Licking his lips to tell me to give him food 2 To go in the car - he stands by the car door then looks at me/looks at the door repeatedly l.a.m/l.a.t.d 3 Dummy work he will fetch the dummy and then drop it near me then back off 5 yards and look at the dummy /look at me repeatedly These are the ones I have noticed and I would like to know if there are any more I should watch for - maybe I am missing obvio
