Wolves Don't bark

Ground frozen here lots of sharp ice around, I've been doing some tracking every day gone about a mile or so a day with each dog I hide three lots of food along the track to keep them interested. It really tires them out using their noses.

Thanks for the translation, There is a mine of information on here but I read through the posts and I dont understand a lot. I could do with a hunting dictionary lol.

Stunning dog looks fit, can I just ask what pugging is (unless its your typing) I'm here to pick up tips. Thanks
-
I have never seen one off the lead now you mention it, a fat greyhound is not a pretty sight. I think adopting a greyhound or three has become a fashionable thing to do around here.
-
Just out of interest, I'm not being argumentative, I live very near a large Greyhound rescue and every other dog you see in town is a Greyhound and most of them are really fat they look awful. You see some people with three or four waddling along it's such a shame.

Been there done that, my son has a foot long two inch wide scar on his stomach to prove it. It's not worth the risk. I was brought up with Bull Terriers.

Teaching a Deerhound To Retrieve
Helen replied to Helen's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Thanks for the advice,he was trained from a pup, he tracks very well and has done some scent detection work which he is very good at slow but very thorough. I wanted to do working trials with him but he wont bring out the search articles. I think I will give up it's too annoying. A very famous dog trainer wrote that he was the best Search and rescue Deerhound in the universe. Pity the git can't retrieve. -
I had my bitch spayed, worst thing I could have done. The weight is starting to pile on, she's four now, despite LOTS of exercise and really cutting back on her food. Drive has dropped but don't know if that's because of the weight. Muscle tone also not as good, she's started dripping pee also.

Teaching a Deerhound To Retrieve
Helen replied to Helen's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I am ashamed to say this of a "working" dog, I have tried the dead bunny on the end of a rope - he chased it, grabbed it, heaved in a truly horrified fashion and walked off!!!!! Have also tried every other sort of toy, the only thing he will bother with is the bloody ball, it is on rope as I'd worry he'd swallow it other wise. -
How do you teach a Deerhound to retrieve, I can't get mine to reliably, if I cut a slit in a tennis ball and put food inside I can get him to bring it back once or twice but then he just looks at me as if to say you threw it you bring it back. I've had him doing search squares, he is fine locating items but he just stands there looking at them, I've had him on a long line but as soon as it comes off nothing.

Fantastic you got them back, my daughter helped out at the RSPCA stables it was a joke. There were a couple of very old horses there who were taken from their owner for being in bad condition. six months later after the RSPCA had them feeding them the very best of everything they still looked exactly the same, owner had lost one that looked fine and was still taken to court. They also wasted thousands of pounds paying for operations on very elderly horses who had very little quality of life and would have been better PTS. They could have spend the wasted money on helping young dogs instead o

I can't stand this country any more I'm sick of all the immigrants and the big brother crap, were looking into going to New Zealand. It breaks my heart whats happened to my county, labour government, never mind voting them out they should be shot! Oh the irony of that statement Yes I agree does sound ironic; I should have been more specific. If I leave for New Zealand I will apply to go, I will make sure I have enough money to buy a house and pay for health insurance. If I am accepted I won’t scrounge off the state and I am not a criminal. More specific to my circumstances, I won’

Just a comment on modern electric collars. It is doubtful you would be able to blast a dog in full flight and prey drive off a chase with one of the new electric collars, you would have to catch the dog before it took off. I have had this problem with my Deerhound, he will yelp at the slightest tingle when not in drive but takes no notice whatsoever with collar turned up full when he is in drive he just picks up more speed. Electric collars used by inexperienced handlers can really mess up a dogs head if you decide to use one you are better finding a proffessional dog trainer. Modern collars

This can be a difficult problem I have dogs and horses so my pups are brought up with them. It's very easy to habituate a dog to horses when the horse is standing still or walking around, it's when they start moving at speed its a problem. I have all my dogs on a long line from tiny, it's no good keeping them on a tight lead and saying leave, they have to learn to use their own self control. For an older dog I'd get an experienced trainer to use a remote collar. One of my dogs was only cured when I shouted leave half a second before it hit the electric fence, won't even look at stock now.

Stunning markings what a fantastic pup. I didn't know you could get brindle rough coats.

Hi Fazza I would imagine your dogs respect you and trust you to deal with strangers, hence the no barking. Not that your too soft with them. Just my opinion.
-
Best keep an eye on your dog, one of mine got Kennel cough seemed not to bad at first then it developed into pneumonia nearlly lost it, dog had to spend the night at the vets on intravenous antibiotics. Lost its sense of smell for months couldn't track it for ages.

I always teach the recall on a long line and then leave a small piece of weighted string on their collar so they think the lines still on. But if their prey drive kicks in theres only my shepherds I can get back, the Deerhound turns a deaf ear I have him with an electric collar if hes around stock. I wouldnt recommend one for a inexpericed person if you dont get your timing right it can really mess with their heads. But I have never had a lurcher, so the long line may not work I don't know
-
Thanks for the help, yes it was an arranged lure coursing event, apparently she beat 20 other dogs. Do you think I might have recall problems with the Saluki blood, just wondered with you saying I need to spend lots of time with training etc.
-
A local lurcher breeder has a litter coming up, dam collie/whippet grehound sire pure bred Saluki, I know the bitch has won a coursing cup. I want a dog for taking rabbits daytime and lamping on wet grassland. What do you think? Hope you can understand the dogs details as I'm new to lurchers.
