Shane, the Breed is fairly ruined already. You would have to travel far and wide to get a sound specimen of a GSD. At that you would need the parents and pups tested for genetic faults. The Belgian Malinois is a fine animal by comparison and still considered a mainly working breed...... not ruined "yet".
-
Sad what the KC closed system and their breed standards has done to sound healthy breeds. If they would only take a step backwards or even sideways and outcross to a Belgian Shepard? No wonder most police forces in the world are steering well clear of GSD's and leaning toward the Belgian type. We all k ow about kennel blindness. But this is kennel blindness on a massive money grabbing scale. A buddy of mine pointed out a while back the the Sealyham was in serious decline and numbers registered below 100 over the last few years..... On their way to extinction. Then I see the KC wheeling ou

Or was it Eric's handler you secretly fancy?

Just flicking through TV channels and saw a German Shepard with obvious health issues. Roached back and blatant hip dysplasia! How could a dog like this be put up as an example of best of breed? The show fraternity are a sad bunch. A working dog if somehow was bred deformed like that it would be PTS. Obviously the kennel club is still working its ways??

Got the Meindl Douver Extreme after a recommendation from a friend. Best thing I ever bought myself. Combined with Seal Skinz socks you cannot go wrong. I would be hard on gear but they are lasting me into a third season..... First time in my life having dry feet.....

Not sure, but I wouldn't mind her cleaning out my kennel..... Or going for a pint talking dogs. Good to see the P.C. rubbish being cast to one side. Made a lot of sense......

Mary, the ANTI's are a pathethic and sad minority. Led by a bunch of deluded clowns, statistically lonely women with a fondness of a certain sexual persuasion. They are easily identified by their actions. Then we also have people so self absorbed with their own pitiful self importance that they cannot see beyond their own nose, I include hunting persons amongst that bunch. Is James Barrington not an Ex League Director and now the Countryside Alliance animal welfare consultant???? Is doesn't get any better than that people should enlighten themselves as it is a diverse world out there!!

Some sensible words by Glynn, Len, hjkk , stopend. But, Not everyone on here is a convert and wise words spoken about our game is always refreshing and if only some of this is taken on board then it is a good thing. A wise man once said to me we should go meet with the ANTIs. They might be surprised how much we really care about the countryside and the wildlife that we choose to hunt and manage, but not annihilate. Regards Facebook and Feds. IMO the Feds can only rightly express their members opinion upon other members. What individual terriermen do on Facebook is beyond any direct control.

I Used To Have A Dog Called Blacksmith

Was he iron hard? I'd say a cut above the rest. -
The most humane and selective way to control pests is with working terriers. The houndmen know this fact, the Gunmen know this fact, the Government know this fact and the ANTI's know this fact. That is why the method is still in place along with a lot of explaining from the men that help protect our interests to people that know little about what we practice. I would hazard a guess and estimate that more foxes have been killed post ban than pre ban. Well done the ANTI's and Animal Rights know it all's............. ????? Mary, What type dogs do you keep and what do you work them on? G

???? Those days are well over and went away with all the yobs that dragged terrierwork down. Tidy working dogs were never in fashion for the hard man with an over sized bull............ Sensible and humane terrierwork is the only hunting that the majority follow. Why look backwards (1973) when the only way to progress is forwards. I'm sure all the nosey Guests would agree? -
It doesn't take much to see the wood from the trees. Show ponies are blatantly obvious and will try many tricks to win. Money has these types ruined. Then you have the real working dog lads out for the craic attending to support the people organising the day for whatever cause. Some have ugly yokes that look like they have been dragged through a hedge backwards and some have half decent looking animals. But both types graft and these lads don't really care who wins....... There are still a few decent working terrier shows about with proper working dog judges. The West Meath one is a good exa

Sounds like one of those dogs that only comes along once in a lifetime. Did she produce anything as good as herself? unfortunately an opportunity wasted in time,i never bred her to any other bull type dog.we had 3 litters from her all to the same terrier. If I had sense and the hindsight to realise we could have created a few decent bull terriers from her I should have gone down that road, all that mattered at the time was digging dogs. A real shame that sounds like she could of been useful in improving the EBT, sounds a real handy bitch. I assume the pups off the terrier mating were pretty sp -

Didn't you know that dogs with average intelligence can understand around 165 words a bit like dog IQ. Fells and Lakies fall Into this category. Then White Russell and Sealyham types along with Border Collies and German Shepards have a higher level of understanding in the region of 195 - 205. Then Black Patterdales types and Plummer types are down the spectrum of understanding around the 105 - 115 level. A bit dumb really! I thought everyone knew that?

Happy you got a pup. What way is it bred?

It never ceases to amaze me how naïve and just plain ignorant some lads are in the hunting game. Ignorance is bliss it would appear for some. Most that do have simple common sense and a sense of protection of their chosen sport choose wisely not to be posting idiotic photos and egotistical talk on the WWW. And before any of the WWW heroes mention it, no I am not ashamed of what I do and have a keen interest in protecting our ways, but I am concerned how the ANTI's and thwarted media portray hunting by clowns providing endless fodder to them...... Nans Pat might as well be living in some re

It is a wise man that is careful who he takes advice as some people no matter what age will never learn. Remember the old lads down my way saying if you pick up a pup by the scruff or jowls and it yelped then the dog was not the one to pick in a litter? All it told me was they were bloody idiots. As we are belting out the proverbs. If at first you do not succeed........ Sky diving is not for you.......
-
Spot on Morton. If you have a good litter of pups and want to "try best" to reproduce that litter you breed the same way. Some families throw the same and some families throw different. There are no guarantees if life or breeding.......... Unless you have a few shillings to spare and want an exact copy, a fella could always try cloning.

Socks, ah yes. Forgot it was THL we are on for a moment..... sarcasm is the lowest form of whit.... Don't you know Slating an entire country is dodgey ground these days. Ask the ISIS boyes Irish Setters International Society..... Just in case I start an international incident

Brilliant answer Socks. I'd say you are some genius. Yah Irish Greyhounds, hounds, lurchers, gundogs and terriers all are crap. Correct about the outcome of the formula. Top marks to you. Trying to figure out the repeatability of breeding unrelated stock is fairly pointless or as Forest Gump would say like a box of chocolates..... You never know what you are going to get! Have you as a genius anything to enlighten us Irish lads how to breed dogs from across the pond or are you just another THL clown or gump?

Downsouth, you have hit the nail on the head above as has C.Green, others confused and contradictory? But a decent topic worth delving into further to try to answer the original question. I would, have and will again cross the same dog and bitch. Here's my reasons for what it's worth and we will all be learning as long as we're alive. The end result of any breeding will be dependent on many factors. IMHO the important factors are genetic inheritance, environment and condition. Environment being how the pups are rared from whelping to entering. Many so called dog men never get this right even
