I was thinking the same things Maltenby. I've said before on here that there is no such thing as a 'legal trap', only traps that can be 'used legally under specific conditions' and I also suspect that there was never really any investigation into how the trap was set, or whether it had been interfered with or anything else. The Spring Traps Approval Order states for the MKVI Fenn traps that : The traps shall be used only for the purpose of killing or taking grey squirrels, mink, rabbits, stoats, weasels, rats, mice and other small ground vermin (except for those species listed in Sche

Just as likely that some busybody has found it set, sprung it, chucked it over the fence and carried on their way.

That book really is an interesting read. I first discovered it a couple of years ago and was so impressed I started to stock it. You can buy reprints relatively cheaply but make sure you get an illustrated version - without pictures it's nothing. From this page http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/17093 you can down load a copy so you can read it off line. Download the HTML thought as the plain text has no pics. Another interesting book available free on line is 'With Nature and a Camera' by Richard Kearton available HERE Chapters IV, VIII and IX are a particularly fascinating a

That will be 'Woodga' he means Isaac. Only a typo I know but I wouldn't want you spending ages looking for 'Wooga'

You don't need to have fencing for that - you'll probably find that you can channel the rabbits reasonably well just by placing a few obstacles about. If you have any logs lying around I'd try those first just so see if you can funnel them through specific routes. I'd then snare a little way off the 'exit' on the runs. It's not guaranteed as they obviously can jump logs but I'd be inclined to give something easy like that a go first.

That will be THESE then.

yes you can make them cheaper than that. The mesh will probably be the most expensive part but if you buy a roll in bulk there are a lot of good internet prices. For timber I use roofing lath which again is quite cheap if you buy it from a timber yard. Obviously the more you scrounge or reuse the cheaper it is.

I tell you what - I'm not going to give a copy to everyone that entered because that would spoil it for the winners. Instead Tracey and I will have a think about another competition and I'll put another copy up as a prize again. How's that ?
-
Firstly I want thanks all those that took the time to enter - I enjoyed reading all of them and it takes guts to put stick your neck out for something like this. Tracey and I have tried to judge the entries by the spirit and enthusiasm of the stories and by the images that they conjure up. We’ve taken no notice of the spelling or grammar and to be honest in many cases the voice of the young hunter comes through much more strongly when it’s written just how they would normally speak it. In the end it came down to two stories: Aaronpigeonplucker – reading this you could really be

Oh no, a last minute entry. That's torn it. Just when I'd made up my mind too
-
Well I have been impressed with the entries - some definite style and passion in some of these stories. The judges are now deliberating and a winner will be announced shortly............

Funnel mouse trap works and now for rats?
john b replied to camies's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Actually Having waxed on at length about the funnel trap being no good for rats, I have just found four examples of it for rats in John Baileys book 'British Traps for mammals', so that could be worth a punt afterall. They are about 15 inches in diameter and have a tapering cone tunnel rather than a straight tunnel. I imagine that the narrow end is a bit of a squeeze and may even be made so that it can expand slightly as they push through. In shape they all look a bit like this one Ebay Trap EDITED TO ADD: Just had a chat with OTC who tells me 'they might have made -
:clapper: Well done that man !

Hi Carnies Well it's an inch and half taller than my trap but I can't imagine that would stop them. Have you scattered some bait around the outside and on top ? If that doesn't go then you know you have no mice. I really like the door though by the way - very neat. Can I nick that idea ? John

not many others left now AF I think TrapWorks may have a few to post too, but these are a couple of holders. One for ground, one for trees.

How close did you have it Carnies ?

I made some for Heart Of Wales a few months back if you get really stuck See this similar topic: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...t&p=1002432

Not the first time either it seems http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/215...-1000-fine.html Although the homeoffice guidance says nothing about urine, so I think there's an argument to be had. http://www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk/dogfouling01.htm There may be some local bye-laws thought I suppose. Which council is it ? Angus council has a £40 fine but says nothing about urine. http://www.angus.gov.uk/atoz/pdfs/dogbook.pdf

I should be there on the Saturday

OK then First off you want the funnel diameter to be between 25mm and 35mm. 40mm (4cm) may be too big. Fish's trap was 25mm, mine was 35mm becuase I read the tape wrong The funnel is just a straight tube but if you want to squeeze it together a bit at the bottom that's fine, but not really necessary. The tube finishes about 30mm away from the floor of the trap. If you watch the three videos you'll see that the mouse climbs down the tube and out of the opening onto the trap floor. As to why they can't escape I don't have a definitive answer but it's the same principl
