  1. That sounds like it could be the problem. You only need ONE spring on each DOOR.
  2. Have a read of this - might help http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=37477
  3. Hi John Please drop me a PM with your required quantities and timescales. I'm sure I can source what you need. John
  4. John Duck Decoys were widely used and are still used today to capture and ring wild ducks. There's an interesting account in Richard Keartons 'With nature and a camera' with is available digitally here http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/keacam/keacam09.htm There was also a feature on the Midlands news a few months ago but I can't find that anywhere. There is a working one at the National Trust at Boarstall where they do demonstrations of it.
  5. Oh yes you can Licence to kill or take certain birds to conserve wild birds WML GEN-L08 http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Images/WM...8_tcm6-7672.pdf
  6. No you're not - you're getting MK6 Fenns. Have you got up too early ?
  7. Have a read on this site - it will help you understand where you stand http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/living_with_bats.html
  8. Pat Is that with scraps AND a decoy ? or just the scraps ? John
  9. As you say, the Larsen works primarily on the principle of 'territorial dispute' and I don't know enough about rooks to say whether they are likely to get as worked up by an impostor as the magies do. My guess, (and it is a guess) is that they wouldn't be bothered as they live in colonies anyway. In fact thinking about it, it's probably that collective living / feeding that make the Ladder Traps so effective on Rooks. But I think that probably leaves you with baiting as you primary means of attracting them. I also think that being bigger they may not be quite as comfortable 'dropping
  10. Here you go, it was a Parlimentary Question in October 2003. I read this that a mole is NOT vermin HL Deb 08 October 2003 vol 653 c60WA 60WA Lord Selsdon asked Her Majesty's Government: Which mammals and other animals are classified as "vermin". [HL4559] Lord Whitty There is no definition of the term "vermin" in UK law. In such a situation the Oxford Dictionary definition should be applied. The Oxford Dictionary defines "vermin" as "Animals of a noxious or objectionable kind. Originally applied to reptiles, stealthy, or slinky animals, and various wild beasts; now, exclud
  11. You triggered something deep in my memory with the thread - and I've just remembered why. Have a look at some of the 'patches' in this topic. There's one at the begining and then a few more much later on. some cracking set ups in there http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=52308
  12. Well rotted horse muck if I can get it. We're on heavy Warwickshire Clay here, (the other side of the fence on the left of the photo used to be a clay pit for a brick works), so I need lots of it. I didn't put enough in over winter this year so the soil in the boxes is too coarse. As they are the boxes are OK for established plants like courgettes but it's impossible to germinate seeds in the damn stuff. We've also had a great big sycamore taken out which will help no end. I also use pelleted chicken manure as a top dressing and as slow release fertiliser in any containers like
  13. This is mine last year - don't have a current photo. 2 boxes 4ft by 4ft plus the greenhouse
  14. Sorry to go against the flow on this lads, but I quite enjoy his fieldsports books You have to remember that these are old now - that one was first published in 1978 which is over 30 years ago. You can't expect a book which is that old to have all the best and most up to date thinking in it. I find them an interesting read but probably not suitable as a 'manual for a novice ferreter'. Mine you there are people publishing some of the same sort of ideas even now so you should never take anything you read at face value.
  15. I've found out what it is ! It's a fungal infection Taphrina pruni known commonly as 'Pocket Plum' Pocket plum is a fungal infection of the young fruits of plums, damsons and some ornamental species, causing them to develop abnormally, without stones. It recommends you gather up all the infected ones before the spores develop and spread. Bit of a task that is. For more detail see here: http://www.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?PID=199
  16. yep I'll stick with these. Thanks for the input everyone.
  17. If you're a member on here I think it's only polite to try and get one direct from Woodga first. But I do appreciate all the plugs. Cheers lads
  18. Yes those look like the same things AF. I'll have to see if I can find someone who's got a fence to put up
  19. If you have a look at Woodga's thread on making a Squirrel Trap HERE you can just scale that up for rabbits. or you could even have a go at this http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/section...abbit-trap.html
  20. This would be a good place to start http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=43368
  21. Yes Rolfe - I agree on all three points. The J clips are what I have in the 'shop' along with the pliers. These ones were sent to me in error when I last restocked.
  22. They're certainly a very similar shape. The hog rings I have come in a strip a bit like staples and are much thinner and sharper. These ones are a thicker, round wire but you're right they may still be a type of Hog Ring.
  23. Does anyone use these Cage Rings at all ? They're supposed to be for cage making but aren't like the clips I usually use. It's a long story but I've ended up with a box full . I've never used ones quite like this so I'm interested in any experience people have or anyone who wants some on the cheap. The folded one was done with a regular pair of pliers. There are special pliers for these but I don't know what the finished shape would be with those.
