  1. I asked the same question Tomo. According to Steve the boxes were set this way at the request of the site owner. There is an area of the garden fenced off to protect it and these boxes are set round the exterior of the fence. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the long term. Either the rabbits will find another way through then fence, or they may get caught running round the fence trying to find a way in.
  2. I don't know Steve - I'll try and find out. This whole project has been done independantly from me so I only know what they've shown me. A wire mesh base is what I recommend in the book though.
  3. I've been waiting to post this topic for a little while now, but wanted to wait until I had the whole photostory. In February of this year I was contaced by Steve, who'd bought a copy of my book, Trap Making Step by Step, and had made some of the traps from it. Out of the blue I got an email with these pics attached; clearly Steve had been very busy. Now as you might imagine I was really interested in the drop boxes he'd made and to see where this went. All the designs in the book are tested but this was an opportunity to follow a truely independant field trial of th
  4. You don't need to apply for the general licences, they are applicable to anyone and anywhere provided, as you point out, that you comply with the provisions and have appropriate permissions for the land. You are not required to carry a copy of it with you although that's generally a very good idea.
  5. I've made some of these up for HoW and sent them for testing. Two different heights for use on either a hard surface like concrete or a soft surface where a trap can be bedded in. If they perform well I shall probably add them to the product list.
  6. Here you go http://www.fourteenacre.pwp.blueyonder.co....sawTrapWork.htm and this
  7. Thats what I thought, but did double check with an under keeper friend of mine, he said much the same, thankyou This is the last reply to me... he's starting to unerve me a bit now... "I myself have a garden where i provide nesting boxes with bird guardians on which take about 5 mins to fit & provides sanctuary for the songbirds.Sorry toni i can't respect somebody who seeks no other alternative than killing & also seems to get some sort of perverted kick out of uploading a trapped bird in a cage on youtube & apologizing for the poor quality. Its quite clear your hatred
  8. http://www.bto.org/research/advice/birdsco...csection511.htm From the BTO Website: "Magpies frequently feed on the eggs and chicks of breeding birds."
  9. Thanks - a very good post indeed. Nice clear pics too
  10. I have spoken to Fenn today and there is ABSOLUTELY NO TRUTH IN THIS RUMOUR. Fenn are still very busy and have no idea where the suggestion has come from. In fact I think they were justifiably a but grumpy about it.
  11. I've heard nothing, and when I spoke to them last week they were saying how busy they were.
  12. I came across this on the web today. Here's the link. http://jamesmarchington.blogspot.com/2008/...t-catchers.html "Meet Danny Sumpter, the man who has just taught me a whole new way of catching rabbits. He learnt it from Glenn Waters, who sent Danny this note 12 years ago" Isn't it refreshing to see someone acknowledging where an idea came from rather than trying to take credit themselves. And a drawing that will be very familiar to all of us.
  13. Mine has Date (plus Year and Month as individual field so I can do year on year trends) What was caught Count of how many Where Method Model (e.g. of trap for when I'm developing a design) comments
  14. Absolutely. And ofcourse any other issues they may be causing.
  15. I would suggest this one would be more applicable and could cover your damage to wiper blades. You may be right, but again we have : Persons relying on this licence must be satisfied that non-lethal methods of resolving the problem are ineffective or impracticable This is not a dig at Andy - it's in danger looking like one so let me make that clear. However it is an important point that anyone taking or killing birds under the general licences MUST have decided which one applies to the circumstances at the time and satisfied themselves that they are complyin with it.
  16. No not quite. But the law is very subtle. Shooting pigeons over stubbles is OK because large flocks of pigeon on farmland cannot be controlled by other means. The licence states Persons relying on this licence must be satisfied that non-lethal methods of resolving the problem are ineffective or impracticable. and it is reasonable to assume that pigeon on stubble today are on crops tomorrow. Crows will cause no end of damage to livestock and straw bales etc and again scaring them off is not a long term practical option. The issue here is not that you can't shoot
  17. Stubby may have a point. WML-GEN-L05 http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Images/WM...5_tcm6-7669.pdf Licence to kill or take certain birds to prevent serious damage or disease Guidance Note: The licence permits authorised persons (commonly landowners and occupiers – see note j ) to carry out a range of activities against birds of the species listed. This licence may only be relied upon where the activities are carried out for the purposes of preventing the spread of disease or preventing serious damage to livestock, crops, foodstuffs for livestock, crops, vegetable
  18. That might be the picture not showing the scale Rolfe - that tile is a standard 15cm x 15cm. The inside width of the trap is only 42mm and it's only about 6mm between the bars. Those two at the end are a bit bent out of shape.
  19. This is a recent acquisition - nothing of any great historic significance or value, but I find the old home made traps really fascinating. I forgot to take a photo from the other end I'll do that tomorrow
  20. Gazza Did you make the box taller at one end than the other ? That's what you need to get the light through. Like this one. It's about 7 inches high at the mesh end and 4 to 4.5 inches at the entrance. The whole box is about 30 inches long.
  21. I think this has come up once or twice before. Have a look at http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=12258 and http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=84545 and http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=71699 and http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=66757 and http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=33056 Cheers John
