  1. I would buy a semi over an O/U if you don't intend to take it to a driven shoot, personally i don't see a problem in using a semi for game, but others don't like it semis are much softer shooting, just as easy to clean if you choose an inertia operated design such as Benelli, and in some cases lighter. DB
  2. roost shooting go with 1/4 i would, a bit or reach to the tops of the trees or 3/8 best of 1/4 and 1/2 all rounder briley make them DB
  3. I was going to ask the same thing, this year and the back end of last year I have hardly seen any, not much of anything come to think of it, i think the cold snap and snow we had must've put a dent in their numbers, plus farmers who I have spoken to haven't had that much crop damage either... :( DB
  4. I have seen, but not shot these up close and they're not small, I would say no 5 is a tad on the small side, I would go for no4 minimum, but ideally No3, if they're as tough as rabbits, and they'll be panicked and the adrenalin will be pumping, you'll want those larger pellets, charge weight, probably 32-34 grams or 36 if you're not shooting too many, then you could open up the chokes and have a bigger pattern whilst maintaining the same pellet density... Cheers DB
  5. Hi mate i bought a browning T bolt 243 and love it, its hardy and shoots realy well! should of had a moderator its making my ears bleed no you didn't , the T bolt is a straight pull rimfire gun, you may have an X bolt or an A bolt... as for the T bolt, i have handeled an old .22 t-bolt and they seem solid guns- check out the .22 review on the Gunmart website, looks like a nice gun, plenty of nevelty value and pride of ownership, coming from a big mane brand like Browning i don't think you'll have any problems!
  6. like others have said, could be that there isn't enough oomph in the cartridges to create enough pressure to cycle the action, it could be dirty, or if it hasn't had that many rounds through it it may still be in the process of being broken in, those Hatsan shotguns do seem a bit...... agricultural DB ooh had to edit that- waaay too many typos
  7. i don't see any problem with this, if it is purely for fox, then go for something bogger, say .223 rem, the .17 will probably not be granted solely for fox as for shooting foxes with the HMR, i have body shot close range (young)foxes to 40yd, and I would head shoot foxes to 70-80m, but only under ideal (ie no wind + solid rest ) conditions as there is very little room for error with this calibre Cheers DB
  8. you only waste cartridges if you take a last chance shot at a fleeing bird, you just need more restraint, it goes bang each time you pull the trigger so whether you waste shots or not is up to you! the only thing you may find with a hatsan is that they're a bit rough and ready, great buys for the money I hasten to add before anyone has a go at me, so you may find they take a bit of running in as they won't be as smooth to start off with compared to a benelli or beretta, in that case, I'd go for the pigeon magnet and save save save for the Benelli, expensive, yes. but IMO worth every penny. I
  9. Yeah that's a bugger, I looked on the midway UK website and they didn't have anything other than the grind to fit pads, I have had one of those fitted in the past and they're darned expensive, once you have bought the pad and had it fitted you're looking at £100 it seems like I might have to have a look see for a gel tek pad Cheers DB
  10. pfffff Heck I can hardly remember... not a huge amount.... less than £200 for materials I think, the back rest/tree gripping plate was laser cut so that'd cost extra, I gotta say though, It's pretty comfy, it's had a few deer shot out of it and the general concensus is pretty good, I modeled it pretty closely to the folding ali seat from bushwear in terms of the geometry, the locking mechanism I designed... in fact I managed to find the exact same seat they have on the commercial seat from a manufacturer in Germany which was about £50 for two seats and back rests plus postage... the make se
  11. Sorry I can't help on the plans, but if you have the equipment and the time, here's the sort of thing you could build, this was my A-level DT project a couple of years ago, made from steel I was originally going to try and make it from aluminium, but learning to TIG weld would have taken too long, currently it's Powder coated in the exact MOD olive colour. Unfortunately i don't have any plans for it as I dropped my memory stick I had them on, (drawn of a 2D CAD package) and it got either run over by a car or chewed by a dog or something like that and the stick was buggered and I couldn't retri
  12. what a shit situation that is.... my greatest sympathies. Like others have said, I hope they give you your guns back!I really don't see any reason that they shouldn't.. DB
  13. Hi all, I was wondering whether any of you know of any pre-fitted recoil pads for the Beretta Slver Pigeon series of shotguns- I have a Silver Pigeon S so no Gel Tek pad there, will the Gel Tek pads fit straight on as well with no gun smithing? I was looking for something from Pachmayr as I have one of their pads on my S/S and it's superb. Cheers DB
  14. any gun shop will give you advice on what you should be using, there's loads of info on the net, but watch out as American shot sizes are different to UK shot sizes, and where we use grams to measure shot load weight, they use ounces... Generally, for everyday shooting, rough shooting at pigeons, rabbits, that sort of thing, you can't go wrong with 30gm or no6 or 5, for anything else, ie waterfowl you'll be needing non toxic shot, either steel or another high density non toxic shot, though if you choose steel you'll want to go a couple of shot sizes higher than in lead and up your payload to
  15. I was gonna say, buy he magnet and the semi, if you're spending £1000 + on a semi another £50 isn't gonna make much difference, assuming you already have a double gun, buy the magnet first and then the semi, or if you don't then obviously buy the semi... DB
  16. I don't think it makes a massive difference, all the filter is doing is cutting down on the level of light being allowed through- ie absorbing all wavelengths (symbol greek letter lamda) except for the red, which is at the longer end of the spectrum. a trick I use and it works well for me, is to scan as normal with the lamp, but hold it so that only the bottom of the beam is illuminating the target- scattered light from the main beam- i.e. most of the light is going over the target and the target is not directly in the middle of the beam, this way you have a powerful tool for scanning, but whe
  17. sorry mate, i'm really struggling to figure out what this post is all about??? are you asking whether you should buy a semi auto shotgun and no pigeon magnet? or an o/u and a pigeon magnet? other than that i'm a bit lost :( DB
  18. agreed, for the HMR and .22 you really can't go wrong with the SAK, it's cheap (£30) and it does the job, sure it's not the slimmest nor the lightest but it has IMO the best bang for your buck you can buy, plus it's a piece of piss to strip and clean DB
  19. oh, so the magazine in an extra insert inside the removable trigger mechanism? isn't that similar to the R93? where the magazine is a plastic insert? DB
  20. sorry mate I have absolutely no idea what that is meant to say.... DB :hmm:
  21. you could get yourself a nifty synth stock from wild dog stocks- they make a drop in one for the CZ rimfires- I think they do a LH version as well... DB
  22. Hi all, Just reading through a shooting mag today and I have seen the New Blaser R8 with detachable mag/trigger group that they have brought out, I though I might ask you all for an opinion on it, personally I feel it is a a waste of time offering no real benefit over the R93, possibly being a disadvantage as it gives you the possibility of losing a (expensive and vital) part of the rifle. Anyways, I'll write the pros and cons below and see what you guys think on the subject! For detachable mag- "safer" in some peoples eyes as the ammo can be loaded into the rifle at the last minute- n
  23. hmm I hadn't though about that, it stands to reason though, as there will be fewer elements in a fixed scope than a variable scope, DB
