  1. Shows to me are a day out for to meet up with lads and have a bit of Craic. Much the same as a joint meet with hounds. Never really get much hunting but a good day out all the same.
  2. Line bred should be all worker to worker done tru generations so definately line bred for me if possible. Worker to worker can still produce good pups but if there's alot of waste in the parents brother's and sisters chances of more bad than good pups are high.
  3. no matter how many hours of time and effort you cant make a terrier go to ground and stay inches from its quarry for hours, it has to have the minerals for it, i believe thats what breeding is. You cant just get any run of the mill pup and it will work 100%, that statement is bullshit. It will probably rat and bush but youd be lucky if it works. Spot on Rob. Breeding is everything in a terrier. Ive seen terriers that were never out in a green field, travel find and work their quarry well their first day out and went on to become very good terriers. That had nothing to do with time and patien
  4. Fairplay Marshman and young terrier. Looks like a smart type of terrier ye have there. As Fd said ideal size. 4 out of 5 in that litter starting out well. It be interesting to see if they will all make the grade. Best of luck with them ?
  5. Exactly terrier should stay with the quarry till the job is done. Everybody can make the excuses but to keep decent workers you need to strive to keep only the very best.
  6. Not sure if it's happening every dig but sounds like the quarry is coming to meet the dog and is holding the terrier on the line. If the dog is made of the right stuff he should eventually back the Fox up to a stop end. If you have seen the parents working and they work well getting job done everytime Use this as ur stardard to keep ur future dogs at. It's easier said than done but ul enjoy the journey!☺
  7. Handy fireman that you can feed some to the ferrets. Not sure if my missus would be thrilled me bringing a bag of dead rats home ☺ Agree with you Fd about antibiotics. Least we use them the better. Most wounds can be cleaned with salt water and then if needs be antibiotics for the more serious stuff.
  8. Dry cow tubes. That's them.Excellent stuff for wounds and I have used them for eye infections aswell. Seen a hound after a fight in the kennels opened up badly. We taught he wouldn make it. Few wks of treatment with the tubes and wound cleaned up perfect.... what do ye do with all the rats ye catch lads to ye bury them or create a big bonfire ☺
  9. We use mastitis cream also for wounds.mighty stuff. It's getting harder to get each yr though. Fd that's a great number day or night.that farmer must have been well pleased.
  10. Never been ratting but holy s*it that's some amount!! that place must have been alive when ye turn on the lamp. With that amount of rats the dogs must take a fair few bites. Is it normal washing of bites and would the dogs ever get poisoned from the furry critters?
  11. Get him a rat or 2 and he might vent some of the aggression ☺ hopefully he will but some terriers can and will always want to fight other dogs. Not much good as I've seen alot of that type to be lacking when it comes to proper work. They are a liability really and normally more hassle than they are worth.
  12. Working dogs are bred for working not as pets. Instincts that have been bred into them for years drives the dog mad when they are not worked. How many times have we seen people being walked by their huskys pulling like crazy and being a handful. They were bred to work hard pulling sleds not some tool up and down a footpath. The Patterdale is bred to work underground so definately not suitable to a life without work.
  13. Sorry for your loss Mm. Best wishes to you and his family for Christmas.. shovel
  14. As Dc says take the terrier out on his own. You might have to try a good few places but he will eventually make contact.Sometimes it takes a few digs for a young terrier to put it all together, how to find and push on in tight places etc but and a big but it is when he meets game and settles he should never leave it until dug to. You will know urself if that time comes and be honest with urself. That is the only way you will ever keep true workers. Atb Shovel
  15. Good practise to get young pups used to the box etc. Then when the time comes they can focus on the job at hand and are not in awe of life outside the kennel. Seen young dogs that were never in a field before expected to work their first day out. The very odd terrier will work like a pro first day out but alot of young terriers are wronged this way.
  16. Sorry lads multiple replies. Phone gone mad!
  17. Agree with you zh. I try to get young terriers out to learn all the sounds and smells of the countryside but I dont believe young terriers need to rag a dead fox. Gives them false confidence as a carcase don't bite back ☺ if the terrier is mature enough imo most terriers that are bred right normally enter easy enough. Imo Any terrier that goes onto to become a good one entering isn't the problem. Its choosing the right earths and not to give them too much too soon. I try too avoid big rangey places with young terriers until they have a good few successful digs first.
