  1. Often when hounds mark to ground or when extra few lads are out for a days digging there can be alot of extra pressure and activity around the earth. Huntsmen saying how long more etc etc. IMO these are not ideal conditions for starting a young terrier.if I can I usually try to start a young terrier out on my own or just with another digging mate.it gives young terrier plenty of time and it can concentrate on the job at hand then rather than hounds and men milling around the earth.
  2. Spot on jiggy.we all know so called terriermen that are show ponies and in my eyes should be culls!!! They don't deserve the good terriers they occasionally have.seen a good few honest dogs ruined by these so called self proclaimed terriermen?
  3. Nice looking pup you have there Leethedog.she's a good size for 3wks old.
  4. Hxrdxr is the wrong word maybe I should have said heavyweight or a heavy mixer type ☺. In litters I have known the strongest pup not always but sometimes has the body but lacks the heart, the weaker pup sometimes has the most drive even though might lack the constitution for the longer more difficult digs.I have often found too the pup which starts all the rows in the kennel is only all show and doesn't often make the grade.I personally wouldn keep these type pups as is they are more hassle than they are worth. I have always just had worker to worker bred pups.some good some not so good.im tryi
  5. When choosing a pup to keep back from a litter to try to keep a line going forward.what do ye lads look out for? What in yer experience are the attributes needed. Does a pup that is a bit noisy and whiney turn out to be a Bayer type.Does a quite, steady pup tend to turn out to be harder.Does the shy timid type run for the hills when it meets its foe! I know only too well that all pups don't make the grade but interested to hear yer opinions on it.
  6. Fine strong pup.good to see pups that are well looked after.best of luck with him.
  7. Seen itch problems on terriers Fed on dry nuts.protein level in the nuts was too high. The itch starts off with terrier having a dry flaky coat and then gets a lot worse.changed terrier feed and no problems since.
  8. Thanks Lads for replies. Didn realise phone could interfere with the reading.tried it out in the yard this morning with no phones on and its still the same.wonder if the box can be calibrated. Hopefully i dont have to cough up for a new box.cause the box is in could shape otherwise.
  9. I have a peips box.it's about 5 yrs old. Towards end of last season it was giving an incorrect depth reading. E.g. at around 1mt depth it would read about 1.8mt on the box. I know this might suit some lads down the pub talking about deep digs but it's painful to use on deeper digs.anyone come across this problem before?
  10. Thinking of taking a trip over there next June. what ye digging lads think is it any good? Shovel

  16. Something similar happened a russel bitch of mine.I found her one evening in the kennel in severe pain and couldn put weight on her back legs.Took her to a greyhound vet and he said that she had damaged a nerve in her back probally from jumping around in the kennell.he gave her a course of anti inflammetrys and told me to keep her confined in a small kennell for a few wks to limit her movements. It took about 2wks for her to improve but gradually got stronger.shes back to full health now. hope this helps.all the best.
  17. I had a 17 month old bitch last season.Met her first fox in ground got a bite and came out. I didn show her anything again for 3 months.then Gave her a rag of fox over ground.following wk she went and stayed till dug to.have had 4 good digs with her since. Give her a chance,if the breeding is there it will eventually show.
  18. Good to see a common sense approach to vermin control.well done to the PATTERDALE TERRIER
  19. This march is not just for hunting folk, anybody with an interest in country sports and the rural way of life should attend! atb Shovel
  20. Normally a good clean with warm saltwater, and then cover wounds with dry cow tube cream.a shot of penicillan in severe cases. sooner a dog gets treatment after a dig the better. good post.
  21. Very sorry to hear of ur loss.A Few yrs ago i had my own experience of a jealous digging partner.Just as i was about to break through he tried to drive the T-bar tru my good dog.lucky for my dog he missed.dont worry i didn miss and that was last time i dug with him. Fairplay to u for keeping ur cool as most would have hammered the stupid fu*ker. Stay the course with terriers and ur sport and it will come good again. ATB SHOVEL
