  1. Magwitch and I had our last ferreting foray today.
  2. There wasn't much of the field that didn't have someone ,either on horse back or on foot on it ,so the hare was very limited in its escape routes. It would have been a surprise if the hare had managed to thread its way past that lot.
  3. Charley the dog in my avatar was a Hancock 3/4 bred,he took all game, fur and feather and worked to the gun . As you can see he was strong enough for red ones too. He was rather hyper for his first year, but settled into a good general purpose animal. I never regretted getting him. Now the lad has committed himself to buying one I hope he has success with it.
  4. No problem ,though there is not much nourishment in the lungs, some dogs like offal cooked,if yours will eat it raw ,so much the better. How have you been ? Dogs doing ok? The rain has done us a favour.
  5. I should think they might be a trifle underweight by now.
  6. As you say each to their own. ps I have a couple of pics of us judging the show last year ,if you send me your email address I will send them.
  7. Before The Indians had horses ,they used to stampede buffalo over cliffs,I should think this is not only indiscriminate ,and wasteful ,but unreconcilable with your statement.
  8. Kennel three, bury one. I keep 2 lurchers in one pen and my old lurcher in the other.Terriers are known to be the catalyst of many kennel fights .Be safe not sorry.
  9. Made a change not to draw a blank .Miles.[private joke].
  10. Magwitch has neglected to mention what would have been a contender for photo of the year,if only he had managed to capture it, ferreting a dyke ,a rabbit bolted like a bullet straight out,and up in the air,his dog Ted, the little , black dynamo, caught it in mid - air ,it really was a marvellous catch,I had to replay it in my mind ,it happened so fast. Two weeks ago a bunny bolted ,whilst the dogs where occupied at another bury, and Pat/Magwitch, caught it in the air one handed. I mentioned it to him today and said "they won't believe it on the HL, we will get slagged off" ,but it's the tru
  11. Have a good day mate! Hope the weather is better for you than on my invite last Sunday a great day ,but it did belt down and blow all day.Still "thems the breaks." ATB.
  12. Skycat's partner has a youngster coming on ,he seems pleased with it so far.
  13. A paying job done professionally, pest control not sport,Magwitch and I do the former ,to get the latter. Had two bunnies in one net about 15years ago ,never two rabbits stuck trying to get out at the same time. You got the results thats what matters
  14. I had saddle and back legs of a hare in a stew tonight.Excellent!
  15. You hit the nail on the head there! Chalk Warren is a Johnny Come Lately. Hasn't been in the game 5 minutes .
  16. Page 63 in the book shows how much lamping was still in its infancy.I remember DB Plummer taking the piss out of the 2 pictures shown, and saying how cumbersome the equipment looked.
  17. Joe,I think Walsh was being a bit circumspect there,he goes on to say."even in daylight the course often takes place in woodland and nothing is seen of it". HE SEEMS TO BE LAMENTING THE FACT THAT THE RUN IS OFTEN OUT OF SIGHT. From his other paragraphs about the deer found in the UK ,I think we can take it that Col Ted knew the ins and outs of taking deer with dogs ,and, not just as a spectator. I met him a couple of times ,and found him a lovely old bloke, who could mix happily with travellers and toffs. We all have a duty to despatch anything our dogs run as quickly as possible ,I
  18. I have heard some very interesting and plausible tales over the years some concerning very well known faces, but, bottom line, no proof no argument.
  19. Seen most crossbreeds tackle foxes over the years,...but few had the intensity or capability of the Bull bloods .... I used to kill them,.. if the landowner or keeper was nearby,..and demanded them gone,..but nowadays,..my business is purely rabbiting,..things are different,..and there is no profit in messing around with a stinky vulpine.... All the best,.CHALKWARREN.... CW,is that a deerhound x in your photo,if it is, was it called LUCY? Sorry posted this without reading further down ,it is Lucy she won Lambourn I beleive.
  20. Winding down now Boyo, soon be bolters about ,but we do what we can, keep the faith son Hopefully see you at a show, during the summer.
  21. Thats Magwitch ,pity he can't retouch my close ups,and get rid of all the excess skin.
