That surprises me Dan ,I would have thought they were much longer,as I beleive the coyote can stay quite well.Ive learned something new. Inan, your'e a coursing man..... surley you know that 2 minutes in the mind is a lot different from 2 minutes on the clock ! Cheers. Point taken! How many times have I heard someone say "that must have been about 4/5 mins"? Estimations of the duration of a course are often like estimations of the length of a slip, very subjective, and dependant on who is doing it!I would not attempt to engage Miles in a debate on running dogs ,unless I wanted

disagree ,you say dogs cant learn to be clever \i say they can ,and run how you teach them SO U HAVE A DOG THAT RUNS 100% FLAT OUT? SO SUCH DOGS ARE VERY KEEN.SO A DOG THAT DONT LEARN TO TEMPER ITS PACE WILL CERTAINLY TAKE INJURIES,BE IT MUSCULAR/SKELETAL/OR FROM OBSTACLES SUCH AS BARBED WIRE. SO ITS EITHER GONNA LEARN 2 RUN A BIT SMARTER OR BY THE TIME ITS GOT OVER ITS INJURY IT WILL BE MAD KEEN WHEN TAKEN OUT AGAIN & RISK INJURY ALL OVER AGAIN???? ITS FINDING THAT BALANCE INBETWEEN & ITS A LOT EASIER SAID THAN DONE, COS IVE TRIED IT 4 YEARS.THERES NO WORSE FEELING THAN SITTING IN

Excellent post from some one who knows what they are talking about, which is not a given on here.

disagree ,you say dogs cant learn to be clever \i say they can ,and run how you teach them How do you TEACH a dog to run [bANNED TEXT] a dogs running game its only under its own control and its style of running imho will mainly be down to its breeding. i will tell you ,from day one when i run my dogs ,if they go flat out up the beam and i dont want them doing it ,i turn the lamp of ,after a few outing they learn to stop when its not on ,so the first step is done ,then its just a matter of of and on untill it gets to where i want him \ie near the chosen quary ,after a season they will run

All my dogs are running free as soon as they can keep up with the older dogs,I beleive some dogs learn to run cunning and some don't ,and I have seen a few hundred working to make this assessment.

That says it in a nutshell. I had a 3/4 grey x 1/4 saluki, he was blindingly fast ,turned well for a speedster ,and had a great gob, I won quite a few stakes with him ,doubled up ,but he was injury prone, and met his nemesis at a dyke , leading his opponent ,he didn't see the dyke ,until too late, failed to brake and dislocated his front leg, he made a recovery of sorts ,and caught many rabbits ,but never coursed again, as he couldn't turn properly.I wish I had put him back to a 3/4 saluki, but never did ,his litter mates were the same ,very good when fit ,but spent too much time injured.

If the current trend continues, often with the assistance of some who do the extra curriculars , I think sadly you may be right,I would guess that in 20 years or so a lad with a running dog will be looked upon with the same sense of censure as a badger baiter/dogfighter.I would like to think that there will allways be a youngster slipping out with his dog trying to catch a bunny but I have my doubts.

I have two friends with lurchers who live in your area.Personally I think it best not to advertise where you work a dog ,there are enough idiots poaching others ground as it is,what with 4x4 possies and helicopters, it is best to be a bit discreet even when on permission, imo.

My views are don't say or post anything on a public forum ,that might come back to bite you in the arse at a later date.

People ,some of them on here ,who say" we don't do any harm the farmer doesn't even know we have been poaching his ground",conveniently choose to forget that in most cases someone has managed to win hard earned permission on it,and by doing it clandestinely they are shitting all over that guy,it might be one of the fella's you have a crack with on here.Either way it's a shitty thing to do imo. Another reason why legitimate hunters are getting pulled at night ,is because of those who haven't got permission. Slowly ,but surely the doors are closing ,but some won't see the wood for the trees.

Smokey ,my blue dog in the pictures is fast, but Ted is so quick off the mark ,Smokey rarely gets a look in,the rabbits never run more than a few yards ,so the dogs have to really be switched on ,plus they are invariably running at an angle in the dykes. Pity the ground was so hard ,still there is allways next time.

It's more of a slow shuffle these days Steve. Hope you had a good birthday, how's the shooting going?

Pics came out ok Pat,even the close ups I took of you, pulling the conjurers trick, but its a bit of a shock seeing all that loose skin hanging from my jowls! .See you in the morning. Early! Inan. PS. If some think these pics are good ,I wonder what they would have thought of the photo I DIDN'T get last week One of Pat catching a rabbit in the air as it bolted from a hole.At least the Farmer was present to see it. Judging by Pat's reflexes that day he should be in slips for the England cricket team, but then he is only a boy to me.

i think they are re-captured many times,to run again Saying shit like that will get coursing men an even worse name! Thats competative greyhound coursing from what i can see, the reason the nearest bloke runs like hell to the catch (on the rare occasion there is one) is to ensure a clean dispatch. As with most forms of hunting with more than one dog, once the quarry is caught the two dogs both want the hare and so its more humane if someone gets there and deals with it. Coursing greyhounds are bred purely for 'the chase' and not for the whole shabang like lurchers so dont really retreiv

Ever thought of doing P R work for the Countryside Alliance no but i am going to try and join the bnp and get this country cleaned up a bit I would never set wires for dogs ,and to be honest this is done regularly in LIncs ,but it does not seem to deter the poachers, perhaps they don't care about their dogs? There are a lot of things wrong with this country ,but I dont think the BNP will sort them ,just a personal opinion. Watched the film Harry Brown the other night ,and found myself agreeing totally with the character, just to say I am no bleeding liberal.

pml nice one all i asked was the title thread ffs!! then have to defend myself for replying to another thread takes the micky! jf, ask people on here...ok il ask now does any of the north east lads come from round middlesborough and have been out hunting on a big estate out towards scarbrough/ scaling dam area?? if so have you ever seen the low wire entanglements the keepers have put out to stop coursing?? i only know it as 6 of us went coursing (when legal) and got locked up for gang poaching by 5 or more members!!! to add to the above, i was out with a few lads over there on a

scars are not medals. This is THL ..Scars ARE medals and to be paraded at every oppertunity Oh dear ! Another macho owner. What is the merit of a scar on a dog? Don't say it proves it is a worker ,because ,as I explained it might just as easily prove it is a clumsy animal that is accident prone. I know this is the hunting life ,the question was what does a judge look for in a dog at a lurcher show? ps It's opportunity, not oppertunity. @ Inan.... Thanks Guvnor! I remember you penning an article in the old Shooting News ,accompanied with a diagram ,"Wha

Caught a few like it ,and also a couple of blue ones ,both in the same place ,coincidentally.

My dogs are my hunting companions and also my pals, after giving their best through their working life I beleive I owe it to them to provide a loving home for them for the rest of their life.Personal opinion.

Close inspection on the cyst will reveal ,what look like clusters of tiny golf balls, these are tapeworm eggs.I remove the matter and freeze the bunny for 3 weeks before feeding the rabbit raw to my dogs.

Just to say syringe the HP in slowly, otherwise it swells up and you get a crackling effect in the limb, and as advised dilute it.Only use once ,it is a good way to fizz out muck but overuse inhibits the healing process.
