  1. The claws on a wild animal, constantly on the move and working hard for a living are short, look at any mink or stoats. The ferret can still grab its prey with short claws, but if they are left long it looks like there toes are being bent out of line and backwards. I've had one of mine with a broken claw cause it was left too long, it tried to dig around a rabbit in a rocky tube, didn't really bother it though, it grew out and was clipped a week or so afterwards.
  2. Sounds like a fox, they'll kill and bury as many as they can when they can, untill disturbed. When hungry they'll come back to them and eat them, sometimes weeks later.
  3. Plenty of work in the field with them both worked for my russell and the ferrets, admittedly I had to hover like a hawk above them to start with, but as soon as the rabbits started bolting, he soon left them alone.
  4. Shame to hear about the loss, for small animals, the ferrets make a big impact on what we do, especially the good one's! Hope you get one near the same, (as good is hard to find!)
  5. A tin can on a rock with a 12 bore at 4 yrs old, god my old man and co laughed! This was on my first rabbiting trip! First real shot's were at 10 yrs old, with my first airgun on rat's, we ended up quite a set of little snipers back then, we could hit a fag end at 30 yrds with castle sights, and in the blink of an eye! Where did it all go wrong! Sorry just seen i'd posted under young hunters, i'm a bit beyond a young hunter so disregard the last post!
  6. Greys, collared and blacks regular, but only whites were when we were kids, and they were xbreeds, wild from a farm. Nice to see the unusual one's, would like to see the wild whites!
  7. He's just overly keen TP but always redeems himself by pulling off some nice catches. Wouldn't part with him for love nor money the little b*****d It's usually the b'stards that shine in the end! May be hard work, (dogs seem to be) but the determination outweighs all else, a dog without it is nothing! Expect a few knocks and bangs along the way as well, but like you say, you would'nt part for love nor money!
  8. My russell has a 4-5" stump, I was told a while after I got him that his tail was how can you say 'Nibbled off by the breeder'! Don't know how much truth is in this, anybody else know about the tail biting? By the way he's 8 now with a happy stump!
  9. Are they bunging up the traps or just setting them off? (They can get quite good once they know what the game is!) Tweak your traps so they are set fine and will trigger easy, Make sure they are free from human smells, Set them in runs free from loose spoil, And maybee smear the inside of the trap with damp soil to mask the metal. You are trying to create as natural as possible, the tunnel they use, any deviation will soon be picked up by the mole, lets us know how you get on.
  10. How long have you got until a dog cannot be docked?
  11. Great work fellas, good bag! Don't think the flask will stay warm till next time!
  12. Class to see the dogs running the tricky bits! Like you say, they get used to it! Looks like the black lurcher was pretty sharp on them! Keep up the good work!
  13. Might be worth thinking also, what ground your going to run them on, amount of quarry. Will be more fun for a young feller to see a few caught sharpish by a faster dog if it doesn't need to run all day, but if your on a lot of game then the stamina comes into it.
  14. Ouch, looks like they nailed you good and proper. Old feller laughs a lot when I get bit, i laugh even more when he gets bit! Good on you for giving them a chance!
  15. Throw it in whole, it won't last two days with a pair of hobs!, just a few feathers left over! They may be a little tubby for a day or two though, maybee don't do it if you plan to hunt with them the day after! Lol
  16. No digging in the graveyard then! :11: decent bag from 1 hit!
  17. Superb piccies, and a great first day out! More of the same please!
  18. Plenty of lads on here with Bully crosses, why don't you organize a man hunt with them? Sure they'd not stick around then! Lol Would that be illegal under modern hunting laws? Maybee just use 2 dogs to flush them then!
  19. They only look big cause there nearer the camera, some of them were this years, nearly full size, but they are alll normal size!
  20. Cheers Frank, thats me old mans name! LOL Brimmer, if that is you in the picture, there is no way you are 35..... Your dogs must be shit hot, to be be taking that many at that age of limestone ground... I take big bags of rabbit from the same area, but i must admit most are taken by ferreting......?? Nah that's Brimmer Snr in the piccie, (No he's not that handsome!) The handsome one's taking the piccie! The ferreting bag's will be making more of an appearence as the season goes on, and there's less around. That's when the digging starts! The dogs, well all i can say is
  21. Shame about the ferret, must have been too big a blow for the little un! Chin up fella, you've got others to take care of!
  22. Good advice on here! Nice to see the dog doing the job early, don't overdo the dog yet, trickle the work into it, then next year, you won't have the time to keep up with it!
  23. Young un's did the work, caught 75%, rest old un (grey) and ferrets. Steady day for us, getting to the age of 35 myself, carrying loads has lost it's appeal, we should be hitting 30 - 50's a day till feb, then they just seem to be breeding earlier and earlier, so knock off as soon as we find them paired up.
  24. 41 today, no big numbers as it's just a training day, (Young ferrets and dogs) out again tommorow for the same, more ferrets, but the same dogs need the work! (2 times a week is no good for dogs like these!)
