  1. Beautiful Munty head Tommy. I'm very jealous of that, we are only just getting them over this side of the country now. There is one isolated pocket that has been here for about twenty years, but that patch never comes up for grabs. Thankfully they are now starting to spread nearer home so just a few more years and they should be plentyfull. Can't wait, the perfect dear if you ask me. In season all year round, bread like rabbits, taste great and nice and easy to carry home.
  2. Yep 243 will kill anything that we can shoot in the UK, no problem. As with any calibre, shot placement is everything and with the flat tradectory I find it my calibre of choice. I've shot Red, Fallow, Roe, Muntie, Foxes, Rabbits, Geese, Crows and even a Bull. At the farmers request I might add. Nothing wrong with the 243, it's down to the man who squeezes the trigger.
  3. With regards to a S&B scope then there is nothing wrong with them. Indeed they are up there with the best. Only you can decide if you like a fixed magnafication and the reticule. I personaly like a zoom on mine but I know plenty that don't, your choice really. Rule of thumb is to spend as much on the scope as you do on the gun. I personaly use a Nightforce 5.5-22 x 56 np2dd ret. Had it for about seven years and was the best investment I ever made. Cost the bloody earth though.
  4. thanks for the reply sorel-2007! i have alot of reading and looking up to do know, before i make my mind up! i hope to move up north shortly so i'll have the added bounus of been able to reload! i'm leaning towards the .308 now! but i do want to find a rifle that is light and has a short action! my mate has shot a blazer 300 win mag, shooting a 5lyr bottle 650 yards. said it is an amazing rifle! i'll let you's all know what i choose! lads thanks for all your help and advice! ATB Colin Hi Colin, in that case I would probably favour the 308. Lots of Red deer in Donegale arou
  5. Been reading the responces with interest. Good honest advice. I shoot in 243 for 90% of the time, when I fancy a change I shoot 300 Win Mag. 300 Win Mag is just a beefed up 308, faster and flatter. That said when I loaded it with 125 Gn heads it was going 3700 fps ish, (that's as fast and flat as a 243 in 70 Gn), but it was too fast and the bullet broke up way too quickley on impact. Shot with factory 190 Gn it was fantasticly accurate and clean kills every time. In short I can agree that 243 and 308 are the workhorses of the stalking community. If I had to choose one calibre then it would be
  6. Nice buck, well done. I like the way that the palmation twists to face forward. Not seen that before.
  7. perks, have you shot fallow in a park? Perks, I shoot between two and three hundred deer in parks every year on a semi professional basis. On top of that I shoot between ten and twenty wild deer as well. I can put my hand on heart and say that to cull ten to twenty deer out of a park in a day is a hell of alot harder that popping out to stalk and shoot a wild deer, that's if you are any good will be completeley oblivious to you being there, thus enabling the shot to be taken at your leisure. You may, if lucky get two deer on the floor in a park before they're on to you. If you have any
  8. Couldn't agree more. Superb scope, very robust, excellent build quality and unsurpassed accuracy. I've used one for the last six years and wouldn't concider anything else. Expencive, but quality costs. I might look at the 8-32 x 56 for the extra range if I were you, but I wouldn't look at another make of scope as you won't find better quality. Best of luck.
  9. Good on you for managing them like you do. Its all about getting the right age structure in the males and then the right stocking numbers/ratios. When done properly the rewards are terrific. It helps having the right genetics from the start though for sure. We tend to shoot bucks out a little bit older than that, just before they start to go back thus making sure they pass on their genetics. Thanks Tommy. I know it's a small complaint but I only have between 70 and 90 does, limited acreage, and if I kept all the bucks untill they go back I just end up with them fighting like hell and no
  10. Thanks Tommy and Wireviz. Interesting, I'll probably put it forward then at the next CLA. But what is more interesting for me is that this was one of the very first prickets that I let go through to the next year seven years ago. So you just get a feeling of satisfaction thinking that the herd is thriving through the decisions that I've made along the way. That was the third best head in there as well. Again thanks for you help and comments everyone.
  11. You may be right, I'm not sure. The Bronze that I shot wasn't in the park although I suspect that it was originally from there. There is a large herd that has it's territory around the park and these are escapies that have now gone wild. When I had the Bronze assesed it asks on the cert if it is a park or wild deer. It doesn't say that park deer are not included in the medal system. Some thing I've never had cause to think about before. Anyone else know?
  12. Nice animal!!!!!!!!!!!! guess it must be moccas or eastnor? Good guess. But wrong, neither of those have heads of any great quality. Eastnor had some good reds before they thinned the herd down. This park isn't in Herefordshire.
  13. Thanks for the comments guys. Very pleased with it. Skinned and cut it this morning and will boil it over the next couple of days. I'll post a pic of it when it's done. I shot a similar sized head about five years ago that made a bronze medal but it didn't have the spellars that this one has. Might get it assesed at the next CLA, I doubt that it will make silver but you never know. Sorry can't reveal where the park is, more than me job's worth. Hope you enjoyed the pics anyway.
  14. Hi all, Don't post on here often, just read posts as and when I find five minutes spare. Culling in the park this week and just had to put a pic or two of this head. I only shoot a good buck every other year or so but this has to be my best yet. Hope you enjoy.
  15. Yes buy the CD ROM. It has all the questions on and picks them ramdomly for you. Helped me no end. Best of luck
