Is The Apbt The True Bulldog Or A Terrier Cross?
neil cooney replied to DogFox123's topic in General Talk
Lusitano, some of what you say is true but to call the APBT a mongeral shows lack of knowledge of the breed. Just because they're not all like peas in a pod doesn't mean they're not a breed. If someone wants to be silly enough and go back to the dawn of time then why not say they have wolf blood in them, as do poodles for that matter. What happened in the breeding of a breed centuries ago is immaterial ,what's more important is the last 30 years and who had them. As I said before the first breed of dog to be recognised by the UKC was the APBT. -

And where did the black and tan come from in some terrier breeds. So do you think Rottweilers and Kerry Beagles are terrier crosses ? do you think the apbt are rottweiler x ? Not for one second nor do I think there's terrier in them. -

JMHO but the gameness most certainly didn't come from the terriers as IMO most terriers are curs. Yes, the terrier was crossed with the bull types for the rat pits. But that's where they were used. Dogs used for a different purpose took their own path. -
What do you mean by half ? That article is 100% shite. It's time an organisation that encompasses all animal keepers such as horse trainers, farmers, hunters, pigeon fanciers ,greyhound trainers etc. etc. all get together and tell the likes of PETA and the RSPCA to f**k off and choke on their veggie burgers.

We do know the truth though. The original post is about the APBT and his history is probably more documented than most breeds with the greyhound and fox hound being two notable exceptions. Remember that the barbaric sports that caused the creation of these fighting breeds are relatively new in historic years. Before these so called sports these dogs originated from dogs used in battle and for catching dangerous game. The mastiffs. -

Probably from inbreeding. The red nose dogs were known as old family dogs. -

Well Pit dog was entered to Nuttal's terriers back in the day for instance, work that one out ;-) Not really, Mr Nuttall has always said that his dogs go back to his Grandfathers and it was him who put pit dog into his terriers. So the bull blood was already there and BN always called them pit dogs, not staffs etc. -

What I'm saying is that the temperament of working terriers and APBTs are completely different. How anyone can look at a bulldog and say they see a terrier influence is beyond me. -

Thats interesting..... If im not wrong the Cajun rules were brought out in order to stop a dog needing to scratch into a dead dog to obtain victory.......so if the sole objective was the first dog to kill or inflict as much damage on the opponent as possible is the winner then where is the need for gameness ?......which as we know was a trait that existed in these dogs long before Cajun rules came into play.......yet a trait not really associated with Bulldogs. Just something to think about. Sorry Gnasher, completely wrong. As for those who say they can see terrier influenc -
Is The Apbt The True Bulldog Or A Terrier Cross?

IMO the dogs that left these shores many years ago and eventually became the APBT in the states had no terrier blood whatsoever in them. Think about it for a second. The terrier of those days were mostly curs (same as today) that were used with no locator to bolt or locate their quarry using their voice. NOW, what would such blood add to a dog that's job was completely different ? Yes, when the rat pits were flourishing a smaller dog was needed and when bull and bear baiting was common a bigger heavier dog was needed but the dogs that went to America were tested on each other and the best -
LOL, but there must be some other good blood in there carrying the wheaten blood ?

What How do you stop the water bowl freezing up in bad weather without some heat in the kennel, mine freezes solid while iam out at work all day in winter, the residual heat from the heaters stops this happening. What does any animal that has a good warm bed to lie in but an outside run where their water is do ? Give the dog fresh water in the evening and if it's frozen the next morning then give fresh again. OR, if you want to take molly coddling to extremes give the dog a kettle and show it how to use it, LOL. I'm all for giving our workers 100% of what they need to be fit

Barney. Ah, some great breeding in that fellow.

I'm inclined to agree mate. My dogs live inside now but I went in my dogs kennel last winter (it's 6x4) in the middle of the night and sat in there for a couple of hours. It was lovely and warm. It's not specially insulated. Just a tongue and groove kennel with chopped straw bedding. It was plenty warm enough. I did use a heat lamp for 8 weeks when I got this pup back in February, just for piece of mind. I suppose it depends on a lot of factors though. Some of them whippet crosses in particular are very thin skinned and not all kennels are adequately draught proof etc. If whip

A shore is a man made drain that's lined with flag stones. If it is the one I think Fat Man is talking about it's a dry shore beside a farmers yard that is like a magnet for foxes. I often remember regularly bolting 3 or 4 foxes out of it. In fact we often popped into it on the way home just to have a quick bolt to give a lurcher something to do. But, my father had a very promising lurcher who was killed coursing a bolted fox out of it, Fatman's great little lakeland Tiny had her last hunt there as did one of my terriers. It's not that they were lost in it but that it was the last place

Book Collection. Should I Sell Individually Or As Job Lot
neil cooney replied to mouse's topic in General Talk
You'll have to sell them individually as you have a few copies of some titles. Unless a dealer buys them and then you mightn't get as good a price. -
Seriously lads ? Apart from pups there is no need for artificial heat for good healthy dogs in well made weather proof kennels. A big load of codswallop to even discuss this on a working dog forum IMO. Nothing whatsoever to do with macho bullshit or whatever, I'm being realistic.
-
I bet you were glad there was no digging involved Fat Man, as it's so hot and you hadn't the lads with you who usually do all the digging anyways, LOL. What terrier was it ?

I was flicking around yesterday evening and there was an old episode of River Cottage and HFW (feck it I couldn't be bothered spelling his entire name) entered a char fishing competition on one of the lakes using the very same method as above, and then cooked the char in water soaked newspaper.

We know that, you said it in your first post that your mate gifted it too you. Your dog is just making strange after being in the one home for a while so imagine what some poor dogs go through when they're thrown from billy to jack every few months. This happens.
-
Spot on. It's got nothing to do with hunting, it doesn't need to be on here. It could well of been a pet owner who's dumped that dog. Nothing to do with working dog lads. You're right ,it might have been a pet owner and the way the lurcher is being churned out by peddlers nowadays there's a good chance it was. But IMO it's good to see fellow hunters on here as appalled by the condition of that dog as any other person in society would be. It's not high lighted enough that because we expect our dogs to actually work that it is in our's and our dogs interest that they be in peak condit

So what you're saying is that he might have the first terrier in history that would rather be in it's box than bouncing of the wire looking for attention. You don't have to be Ceaser Milan (or whatever he's called) to see that the terrier is making strange with his new surroundings and owner and all the different sounds and smells that comes with that. Some dogs are quicker to adjust than others and plenty of attention and time should sort it out, depending what sort of a dogman the new owner is. It amazes me that there's people who think that swapping dogs from billy to jack all the tim

That hare looks totally at ease, usually they know you're there and are watching you. Great pic.

Never argue with a fool, They'll just drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
